Photoshop :: During Startup Both Bridge / CS6 Try To Make Temp Files On Root Folder Of OS Drive
Aug 18, 2012
There is a serious root problem with Adobe's implemented permissionless-temp-file creation methods (pun intended.) The problem is that during startup, both Bridge and Photoshop CS6 try to make temp files on the root folder of the OS drive. Its affecting many peoples' installations by crashing them on application launch if not run by the super-administrator account on the computer. Adobe says to just run as admin to fix it, which does fix the start up crash. However, for me, it creates a gigantic problem: it breaks OS-to-PS and OS-to-Bridge drag and drop functionality completely!!! I literally was slowed to a crawl in my workflow having to import photos 1 at a time through the file-> open menu because I couldn't drag and drop various files from various locations on my computer. Not everything is clumped in 1 area neatly for Bridge to open everything, and I never realized just how much I used this function until this run as admin band-aid broke it. Eventually I fixed the CS temp location after 10-12 hours of hair pulling research and trial and error, and I finally have Photoshop CS6 working without admin permissions and everything is dandy with drag and drop, but only in PS. Bridge still cannot be run without administrator privileges and cannot have files dropped in or out of it to or from Explorer, and I am getting really frustrated here.
So does anyone else find their drag and drop ability gone once running Bridge/PS CS6 in admin mode? Is there a way to move the default temp creation location of Bridge as well? I'm frustrated and I think Adobe seems to be taking this permissions issue way too lightly!

when I start CS3 the startup stops and I get this message:
The folder specified for temporary files is not available.
The default folder will be used.
After I click OK, the startup resumes.
I have tried scratch disk (turning it on and off), but this does not seem to help.
Also, I cannot find this folder (where is it, ore where should it be?).
Windows XP pro SP3
RAM: 4GB
Free disk space: 60GB on C, 380GB on scratch disk.

I'm using Elements Organizer 11.0 with Windows 8. These temp files have been a problem in at least the previous three versions of PSE with the previous three versions of Windows.
Scenario: Suspiciously low on disk space
Problem: Found thousands of duplicate image files in Windows temp folder (ex. C:UsersUsernameAppDataLocalTemp)
PSE creates these files and never deletes them AFAICS after exiting the program, rebooting, using the Windows 'Disk Cleanup' utility, optimizing the catalog, etc. I found no user preference for deleting temp files or limiting them to a particular size.
These can be created for many reasons, but one sure way to do this is to choose File>Save Metada to Files. (If you don't have any images selected it will attempt to do this for all files displayed.) In my case it makes a duplicate of my 29MB CR2 file and a backup of the associated 4KB XMP file. I've used Windows' fc.exe utility to verify that the CR2 is exactly the same, byte for byte.
Is PSE designed to leave these around for us to clean up after they consume the entire hard disk? Am I missing something?

when you rename a photo in LR the name should also change in the root folder. However this does not seem to be happening, I have checked the name in Lightroom and it has changed, ie. family_trip_100 then I go into the folder and bring up the only and exact same photo and it says it is family_trip_7-2

Can the location of the temp files be changed in Photoshop CS5? NOT scratch disc assignment, that's assigned correctly. I have a storage issue in my recovery folder and there are photoshop temp files clogging that up.

I have a problem with the Temp File folder. I know that photoshop cs4 uses a lot of scratch disk space and I have about 250 gbs of free space on the hard drive. I am working with very large files that exceed 4GBs at times and the free space on the hard drive is alway diminishing. Should i delete the temp files or is there a way to set how much data gets stored in the folder? Another question is, should i assign other drives for scratch disk space? i have 3 other hard drives but they are not as fast as the system hd. and if you have tips on tuning the computer for better performance would be greatly appreciated. The set up is among the following lines:ASUS motherboardIntel quad core 2.33 ghzand 32gb of RAMNvidia 9800gt

I've a problem to open an old X4-Coreldraw file. The first time I can open it - when I want to save this file CDraw says that the file will be changed to the X6 Version. I say OK and save the file. The 2nd time I'll try to open the X6 file again then the Error occurs! I changed my settings in CDraw to a local dir c: emp, also to a new drive - but nothing happens! All the drives have mor than 400 GB free space! I hope this will be enough.

When importing something off of a DVD or CD how do I direct Lightroom to copy the imported images or folder to a specific folder on my hard drive? It seems to default to MyCatalog but leaves the location on the CD rather than copying it to the drive. If I remove the CD the images is reported as missing.
When I go to the top of the screen for importing I can change the source but the location info on the right is not active or changeable.I am new to lightroom and coming from Photoshop Elements background.

I have another question about installing LR5. How do I manage to install the program to a special folder and not the custom folder on drive c:?
I just run the installation through application manager. I set the installation folder within my presets to d:adobe...
But anyway it was installed on hard drive c:
A direct download of the installer from adobe is not possible unfortunately.

I've got about 10,000 photos that I've moved in lightroom by creating a folder called 'pictures' on the external drive using the left folders panel. I then selected all the images in the root drive on my computer and dragged them onto the 'pictures' folder on the external drive, and I expected the folder structure to come with it. Only after I realised that they had all moved into one folder. Is there a way of moving the images back into a structure without manually doing it? Here's a screenshot.....

We used a block which contains deisel expressions for our plot stamp. When we publish through the sheet set manager it shows a temp folder where the drawings are spooled to instead of the actual drawing saved path. We can fix this buy turning off background plotting when we publish, but I was wondering if there is a way to show the saved path instead of the spoolled path when publishing in the background.
Below is the expression found in our plot stamp block.

Photoshop does a lot " *. TMP" files when the program is started up. These temp files, I would have moved to another location. How can I do it?
I am aware that it is possible to define which file "Photoshop Temp11309645056" to be created and how I place it at his own request, but it is not these files I ask for positioning.

On my system I have small(330Mb) virtual RAM-disk R: . My system configured so that all temp-files, cookies, cache... all placed on this disk R: . Now - I try to work with Photoshop CS. I know, that 330Mb isn't enough for work files for Photoshop, so I try to tell it: "Use real hard-drive C: for you scratch file(s)". For that I went to "Preferences->Plug Ins & Scratch Disks" and set _ALL FOUR_ scratch disks to "C:". All the same - when I start my work Photoshop CS create it's temp file(name like "Photoshop Temp4122672") exactly on R:, not on C:! Of course after 10min. of work I have stable error: And so - how to force PS to use C: as storehouse for temp-files?

After much hassle I got Photoshop to work but Bridge always fails with the message
"Failed to write to temporary folder (V:mp). Please change the environmental variable TMP to an existed folder on the C: drive"
Ignoring the questionable grammar for the moment why does Bridge care where my TMP directory is? CS5 doesn't care. None of the other programs installed on this system care. Bridge is absolutely adamant, though. Give it temp space on C: it's perfectly happy. Put it anywhere else and no way at all... Where was Adobe QA when this was tested?

I'm on a MacBook Pro retina.
While I have a 500 Gb hard drive, I notice that the Bridge CS 6 cache is getting larger quickly (looking forward to 1 Terabyte SSDs).
I have most of my images on external hard drives, but Bridge CS6's cache seems to be on my computer.
Can I store the Bridge cache locally?
So, if I have 1000 images on hard drive A, the cache for them would be on hard drive A.
And for 100 TIFFS on hard drive B, the cache would be on hard drive B.
And for the 100 most recent TIFFs I keep on my computer's hard drive, the Bridge cache would be on my computer.
It this what checking the box next to "Automatically Export Caches To Folders When Possible" does or am I misunderstanding this - and this option only puts COPY of the cache files on the external hard drive, but the Bridge cache file on my computer still contains all the images, not matter on which hard drive they'd be?

I'm copying RAW files from a shoot onto my network RAID drive in a per-album folder, from where I then import into a new LR catalog (I'm using LR 4.1) on my Windows laptop for that album.
I'm finding that editing RAW files on a network drive from a wireless laptop is awfully slow (not to mention not being able to continue the work offline somewhere else), so I'd like to cache those files on my speedy SSD drive just until I'm done editing and exporting/publishing that album.
I back up my per-album catalog onto the network folder alongside the RAW files since that's my IT-managed master repository. When I'm done editing, I'd purge the cached files and just keep the catalog previews on my limited capacity SSD.
So, is there a way to tell LR to, for one/all files imported from a location (in my case a network folder), look in an alternate location for the identical files? Since I create per-album catalogs in per-album folders, there wouldn't be filename clashing. Either LR can provide this caching behavior on its own or I'd manually copy files from the network folder to a local folder and tell LR to look there first.
I don't really want to make copies of files into secondary folders within LR since then it's a hassle to merge edits on the cached copy to its master copy (I haven't done this, but I'd imagine so).

In Bridge I got an error message saying I needed to purge the cache folder, but when I attempt to do that, everything freezes and I have to force quit Bridge. I was told to go to the Bridge cache folder in "library" and delete specific folders there to solve my problem. Unfortunately, I cannot find "library' neither by opening folders and looking nor by doing a search for "library".
