Photoshop :: Drawing Outside The Layer Auto-Select Layer
Feb 19, 2008
I have an image with 8 layers and i want to draw lines. So I make a new layer. While this layer is selected, i select the line tool and draw a line. Then, as I want to move this line, I select the move tool and try to move it. But instead of moving the line I just drew, photoshop automatically switches to my background layer (although i'm not sure it's defined as "background layer") and moves the entire content of the layer.
To see what actually happened, i hid each layer in the layer palette... And still... here was my line. (with all layers hidden, is it POSSIBLE to have anything?)
I tried to select my line and then, using the move tool, move it, but the message "could not move the selection because the selected area is empty"...

After moving to Win 7 I re-installed CS5. And have forgotten how I managed to set something to "auto select the right layer". For instance, clicking on the text of a text layer used to select that layer, clicking on a shape selected the appropriate shape layer. Which setting did I use for that and where can I find it? Should have written it down...

I have "auto select" turned on for the Move Tool and I click on a layer. How can I get Photoshop's Layer palette to scroll what I selected? I'm having to scroll up and down a lot trying to find my highlighted layer.

Auto select layer is not working. I accidently hit a combination of keys and now it doesn't work. I did see that in the Layers box it indicated Pass Through but I checked Normal and it is still not working.
I restarted my computer twice in case it was my computer.

I have been using CS6 for a while now and one problem that I keep encountering is the auto-selection of shape layers. Trying to auto-select a layer that's within 10 pixels of a shape layer is impossible without having to zoom in. This is a little hard to explain without images... Cue image...
Â
If you try to recreate the above image, where the black 20x20px rectangle is a shape and the red 38x38px rounded rectangle is rasterized pixels, you will see that auto-selecting the red rounded rectangle is impossible at 100%.
Â
Is this intentional and just an issue for me? Selecting pixel layers in CS5 was never this annoying. It seems that shape layers have an invisible 10px area around them stopping you from selecting anything below them. This is so frustrating with pixel UI work.

I can do one or another, but both at the same time? It is annoying because a mask selection turns into layer selection when you select a second layer/folder.

How can I select a shape on a layer in PSD in the layers palette?
In my past version of PSD, I was able to simply click on the Layer and hold either select or control to have marching ants go around my image - but with CS2 I am not able to do that.

Today i opened a psd file which 200 layers. Paint.net is very slow then (as all layers are flatten, pdn is missing hierarchical layers), but that is another problem.
I wanted to hide some background layers and "copy merged" a selection.
It took me 10mn to find all the backgrounds layers without this tool.
In photoshop the tool exist as a property of the "move selection" tool. Ie: you must first select the move selection tool, then select "layer" in the properties toolbar.
Any way to get that for v4 ? Will v4 be on github so we can clone and make patches ?

if there are keyboard shortcut keys to these two operations?
1. Selecting a different layer than the active layer w/ keyboard key and selecting an item on that layer on the canvas?
2. Shortcut key strokes to select > Transform > Scale?

I am actually an Encore user who uses Photoshop only for the menu. I am not experience with Photoshop.
Â
A button in Encore menu is made up with a few layers. Example here can be a box and a text label below. These are 2 different layers in Photoshop, grouped together.
Â
I'd like to aling the text label the to box. Normally the box is wider than the label. So a simple arrangement is center the text label according to the text width and box width. Right now, I have to manually adjust it by choosing both and align "center". Is there any way to automatically center the text label?

My problem: Because I deal with a lot of layers and groups I always strive to find some easier way to manage them and one of the things I always struggle with is getting everything in one group to stay a certain width or height, especially text.
Desired Solution: I combine each section, such as all the elements for the left column, in its own group and label it accordingly (A life saver when trying to find and edit something ). Then when I add an element to a group I would like the predefined width restriction applied to it so that no content can extend outside that area even if I take my text tool and select the entire document.
Is there any way to do this? Right now I'm stuck with using vibrant group backgrounds with the desired width or height as a guide. This isn't too bad a solution but can sometimes be time consuming, especially if there's a lot of content. If this is possible is there also some way to apply a padding to it?

When you create a text layer, it automatically names the layer whatever you type. If you go and rename the layer, it keeps that name regardless of what you type on your document.
What I want to do is revert the layer back to doing it's auto naming thing. Is there any way to doa that?
I can't just do "undo". Its an old document. I know I can copy the text into a new text layer and it will name it the way I want to, but I don't want to do that if I don't have to.

It seems once you enter a custom name for a text layer in the Layer palettes, it breaks the connection between the text content and the layer name.
Â
Is there any way to get a text layer's name to be the same as the content of the text layer? (In After Effects, if you clear out a custom name of a layer, it will automatically rename a text layer to what the text contains.)

i think that adobe should make it able to take and select more than one layer and not only put a filter on all of them at once but also change the layer style to all of them at once. you can already scale and move all of the selected layers wich is good but it would be a nice feature to be able to do other stuff with the selected areas.

I have found that when I use the Layer Styles on one layer and then make a new layer or select a shape that creates a new layer that when I go to add Styles to the new layer/new shape the previous layer is affected by how I set the Bevel & Emboss, Direction, Altitude, Drop Shadow etc etc.
Â
For instance, let's say I have a ...
Â
BG > New Layer > draw an ellipse and then add a Bevel with an > Angle of 89 and an Altitude of 30 and then I add a New Layer > open the Styles and go to change the Angle to say +89 or whatever and the Altitude to say 45 ... the first Layer/Shape Effects change.
Â
How I can keep one Layer from being affected by an other Layers Effects'?
Â
I have found that if I Rasterize a Layer Effect that I can add a "double" effect on the same layer but I haven't tried the to do this with separate layers. However, for most of the work I am doing I cannot use the Raster because everything needs to be true vectors.

I have a Dell Laptop/Windows 7 Home Premium that's a 64 bit

On the Adobe site it states:
Â
If you need the lowest layer selected, press Option-Shift-[.
Â
Well, it doesn't work for me in all cases because if another layer is selected, both end up being selected. Inside an Action, how do I select the lowest layer, and only the lowest layer?
Â
And while I'm asking Action questions, in an existing action, how do I start recording so that the new actions are placed right at the top? If I select the name of the Action, the new recording is placed at the bottom. If I select the first item, the new recording is placed second.

In past versions of PS I've been able to select the object in a layer by hitting control and clicking on the layer. I would get the marching ants and then could use that selection by creating a new layer for it and then manipulate it as I desire. Now it looks like the stroke causes linking to turn on and off.
I very much liked being able to select the object in a layer and used it quite often in my designing. I still want to use it, but how? Does anyone know if this function has been preserved and how do I access it?

I use quite often the right click in the window to select a layer, which works great. But sometimes this feature stops working as the menu does not come up with the layers below the mouse. First I thought it was the mouse but rightclicking in any other part of the screen (such as the border around the document or the panels works fine.
Is this a setting I need to make or is it a different problem such as lack of memory or what?

I am in search of a add on program or a lisp that I can change an architects layers to the layers we use. I know layer translation command is available but every time I have to select what the layers translate to. It would be nice if there was a way to add the new architect layers into a database so when we run the lisp or program the layers will automatically change to our layers we use.Â
