Lightroom :: How GPS Coordinates Are Written To EXIF In LR4
Jul 17, 2012
How GPS coordinates are written to EXIF in LR4.
Here's the bottom line: I understand how to insert coordinates into a photo's EXIF. I can clearly see the coordinates when viewing EXIF within LR4, but that's where the trail ends.
I am trying to view the GPS EXIF data in multiple other programs and I just don't see it anywhere. I also participate in an web sharing site that automatically maps photos upon upload, assuming the coordinates are in the EXIF. This isn't working for me either. As a test I uploaded a file that had coordinates written to EXIF (according to LR4), and then downloaded that image back to my PC, and re-imported it to LR4 ... I can see all EXIF except no GPS coordinates.
For all practical purposes, it appears LR4 is not really writing the coordinates to EXIF except for what is displayed inside the shell of Lightroom.

I have updated GPS coordinates using the new Map module but these are not output with the EXIF when I export JPGs.
I have ensured that Remove Location Info is unchecked.

Since today I'm using "Lightroom 5.3 RC for Windows". When I export to jpg the Exif meta data contain a Exif tag "Software", the value is "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.0 (Windows)". Why doesn't this tag show the version number "5.3" (or "5.3 RC")?This behaviour has been at all prior Lightroom versions I know.

Yesterday Lightroom 5 worked fine. This morning, nothing will export, with the message "The file could not be written." This applies to dng and jpg files. Nothing has changed as the computer was shut down overnight. My HD has 98% (1.97 TB) space available and I have Mac OS X 10.8.5. I recently upgraded to LR5. Neither new files nor old files (on another HD) can be opened, although all files could be opened yesterday. What can I do?

When exporting from LR 4.4 (and 4.3) as a jpeg, "file could not be written" appears when saving to main hard drive. Exporting to a thumb drive or external drive of any kind works fine.

I have a question about the location of any metadata (IPTC, keywords, etc.) written in Lightroom 5 to my raw files. I understand that this data is written (embedded) into jpg files but as a .xmp file next to the raw files. My question is, if I purge the jpgs and do NOT continuously copy the updated .xmp files to my backup drives, and if I were to lose my Lightroom catalog, will all my Lightroom metadata that I added be lost? Or, does Lightroom keep all my metadata in the catalog file? Is the Lightroom catalog the "source" location of the data that's added to the jpgs and .xmp file?

When I attempt to export a group of approximately 50 photos from LR4, a window opens at the end of the process saying "The file could not be written" along with a list of approximately 10-15 NEF file names. I have never had a problem exporting before, but I recently started storing my LR catalog and files on an external USB 3.0 drive.
Here are the details:LR4 with latest updatesWin 7 with latest updatesLR catalog and photo files stored on external USB 3.0 G: driveTrying to export to a folder on my desktop on C: drive (46GB free out of 134GB, solid state drive)LR files are NEF, exported files are JPGI've tried to export to the same group of photos multiple times with different names and different output file sizes (8MB, 5MB, 2MB). Each time the list of failures is different. Some of the thumbnails which appear in Windows Explorer are corrupted (part of the thumbnail is gray)When I try to export the same group of photos to the external USB 3.0, it works perfectly!
Here is an example of one of the LR log files:

adding a preset to already edited photos without changing the edit. Basically I will edit an entire wedding and then I go back and pick out favorites for my bride and like to add the same artistic edit over them. Since they are already all edited to my clean beautiful photo, (color balance, exsposure, editing for maybe none ideal lighting during ceremony) I would think there would be an easy way to add a preset without having it change all my adjustments I made so to speed up my process. I know If I bring my photos to photoshop and bring them back into lightroom it pretty much resets it to basic

When pinning a photo to the map, and get the GPS coordinates into metadata. I also get information in the IPTC fields for ISO Country Code, Country and State/province, but they are marked in italics and with a grey-coloured typeface. I use DNG raw files.
When exporting to JPG, the GPS coordinates are included in EXIF, but the placenames are gone.
If I enter the placenames manually, they export to both IPTC and XMP tags.
Why are the automatically assigned placenames not included on export?

I am new to Lightroom and evalutating 3.6 on a trial.I performed the following test:
1. Imported 3 pictures into Lightroom from my hard drive
2. In Lightroom, I made a keyword change to one photo (removed a keyword).
3. All three photos' Metadata icon show the arrow, indicating that there has been a change. (I only changed the keyword on one photo.)
4. I click the icon for the photo whose keyword I changed.
5. I get the message "The metadata for this photo has been changed in Lightroom. Save the changes to disk?"
6. I click "Yes".
7. The photo's Metadata icon shows an exclamation point. When you hover over the exclamation point, it shows the message "Sidecar has conflict".
I have two questions:
1. My expectation is that when I changed a keyword, or any other metadata, in LR, it will show up on the photo outside of LR. My understanding is that this is a functionality of LR. Am I wrong? (The Help files seem to indicate that this is a reasonable expectation.)
2. I am assuming, having read many posts on the forum, that the error message "Sidecar has conflict" is a bug. Am I right? (My understanding is that JPEGs don't have sidecar files, which just makes this message even more odd.)
I am on Windows 7 Home Premium (upgraded from Vista Home Premium), 32 bit.

I've recently encounterd a problem while trying to export images out of Lightroom 4. I keep getting an error messge "File canot be written." This is happening whether I'm exporting a Jpeg or a raw file. Cannot figure what has happend but it's doing it with old and new files, so it's not an issue of a corrupted file.

I have lightroom 3. I have set my camera on shooting in jpg and raw. I import them both and get them as 1 picture in lightroom. When I rate the picture with a star and I save it to the exif data it only saves it to thseperate xmp file. Also if I rotate the picture it only writes it in the separate file. I want to save also the exif data to the jpg file. How can I do this in one go?

I have a Panasonic GH3 camera. I would like to add an item that is in the EXIF data of the RAW and DNG file to the EXIF fields kept by LR5. I can see all the camera EXIF data by using the GREAT 'exiftool.exe' created by Phil Harvey.
[URL] ......
Just to start, I would like to add the item "Focus Mode" that is in the "Panasonic" section of the EXIF file of the RAW and DNG files. The Focus Mode field has values such as:
Example 1:
---- Panasonic ----
Image Quality : Raw
Firmware Version : 0.1.2.0
White Balance : Auto
Focus Mode : Manual
AF Area Mode : 1-area
Image Stabilization : Off
Macro Mode : Off
Shooting Mode : Aperture Priority
or, as anoher example:
Example 2:
---- Panasonic ----
Image Quality : Raw
Firmware Version : 0.1.2.0
White Balance : Auto
Focus Mode : AF-S
AF Area Mode : 1-area
Image Stabilization : Off
Macro Mode : Off
Shooting Mode : Aperture Priority
I find this data in both the Panasonic Raw files, and the DNG files created by LR5 (and I was very relieved to find that the Focus Mode is carried forward to the DNG files, since I don't keep my old Panasonic RW2 Raw files after they are converted to DNG!).
So, since this camera manufacturer data *is* in the DNG, LR5 *is* reading it.
Thus my question: How can I tell LR5 to inclued the "FOCUS MODE" value in the EXIF data it creates with each photo?

Is there a way to export jpegs with some exif info (creation date and tile) which should be saved directly on the image. Like the showing of the timestamp on the picture which can be turned on on some cameras.
Reasoin is: I want to use those pics on a digital image frame and I want to show some image data as well. As there are no options in the software of the digiframe to display exifs I have to integrate them in the pictures...
if it is not possible with lightroom then probably you can tell me another way (bridge, photoshop, ...) - just not manually...

Does the current 4.?? (or 5) provide a way of including selected EXIF info as text on the image at export ?

I am trying to import plant photos into Lightroom4 with their Family, Genus and Species along with Location keywords, by placing the data in the image using exiftool. But failing. One hierarchy seems to work, but not more. I can replicate what Lightroom creates, but it does not seem to read OK.

I'm having this problem in version 3 and 4. I have a Canon 40D and all of my photos that I've editing in LR (not cropped) are missing the focal length in the EXIF data.
This does not happen with Canon DPP. LR will see the focal length in the library view, but when it's converted to JPG and then viewed in ZoomBrowser or whatever program that piece of data is missing.
Windows 7 SP1 x64, LR x64, "Minimized embded data" is unchecked as well.

I shoot pictures in RAW (Pentax PEF format) which includes gps data. As the pictures are being imported the Lightroom prompts for reverse geo mapping and detects the data and locates it on the map from map module. However, when exported in JPG, the GPS is missing in the Exif. It was working in 4.1. Again, it did not work sometimes in 4.1.

I have a problem where LR4 on import seems to rewrite the xmp-files, and in that process data is lost, notably GPS-data, is lost.
My workflow:
Create xmp-file with Exiftool from CR2-files (sets copyright etc)
Geocode with Geosetter
Color labels with Photo Mechanic
Import to LR4
After import geo data is gone for around 30% of the files. It seems like files that have received a color label by PM is not affected, and many files without color label are correctly imported.I never loose any data before importing to LR4.
I use a Canon 7D, Exiftool and Geosetter are updated to latest versions, LR version is 4.3. I couldn't find how to attach files, but how the xmp looks before and after LR4 import, I could copy-paste the code in an answer.

I'm working on macro insect photography, and I used to find it really useful to be able to hover my cursor over an image in the filmstrip and see the aperture, shutter speed and ISO pop up. It was great to be able to see at a glance what sort of settings were producing better photos. Now, however, when I hover the cursor over an image, it's the date and time of capture and the size of the image that pop up (and the file name as before). I've combed through Preferences to see if it's a Lightroom setting I can change, but I can't see anything relevant. I've googled away and searched these forums, also to no avail. I know I can go to the Metadata panel in the Library module to see those photo attributes, but that's more cumbersome than what I used to be able to do. Is there any way to revert to the seeing the aperture etc at a glance the way I was previously able to? (I'm using Lightroom 3, pondering upgrading to 4).

For years I have been using Bridge and ACR for my raw workflow. I use only DNG files and have the database turned off so the EXIF data is embedded right into the original DNG file. This means my files are 100% portable without and sidecar.
Can I work with lightroom 4 without having a database? OR can I assure that each DNG file has all it's setting automatically embedded as it does in Bridge?

I'm looking for a solution about the omission of lens brand in the Exif data generated by Lightroom (even 4.2 version).
I know there is some discussions about this topic, but I didn't find anything specific with brands of lenses.
When I export with Aperture, correct Lens ID appears in the Exif data:
Eg Lens Model: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
But when I export the same CR2 file in Lightroom, "Canon" is omitted, I got:
Lens Model: EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Same thing with pictures taked with my Sigma and Canon family.
In my case this is a "problem". I need Exif tags containing lens brand for an accurate process with others softwares, for example with PTGUI to generate spherical panoramic.

Is there a way to view exif info of each photo on the LR 4.2 import screen. I'd like to view Exif data before making the decision to import the capture but can't figure out how to do this. Ideally it would appear as a 'tooltip' when hovering over the image in gridview, or, when looking at a single image it using the "I" key should display image info like it does in other modules of LR4. Are there any plugins that could do that?
