The other day I was importing RAW photos and a message said that it did not import all images to DNG. Then, it shows the images imported as JPG. I would rather them be saved in NEF and converted in DNG. Maybe it was a button I pressed.

I have to say I never converted anything to DNG before. I just tried to convert a few files and all the edits have been discarded.
I have a doubt: when importing and converting from Canon RAW (CR2), extract Lightroom ALL COMPLETE information from the original file? I've observed that Canon RAW software display some information like the AF points that doesn't appear in LightRoom. I want to know about this question for better decide if i must convert to DNG and delete original CR2 or include the original RAW in the DNG file (duplicating his size)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am seeing different behavior when converting CR2 files to DNG dependent on whether I am converting on internal SATA harddrive or a networked (D-Link DNS-323) harddrive connected via USB 2.0.
I have "Delete original after successful conversion" checked in bother cases. When converting on the internal SATA drive, LR4 deletes both the CR2 files and the xmp side cars But on the Networked drive, it leaves the xmp sidecars untouched.
I was recently reading on a Nikon Forum where a writer stated that some data is lost when converting to DNG in Lightroom.
Every compression algorith is flawed if a single bit is lost and the original can not be recreated. Since the DNG converter must know about your camera model and it actually converts the NEF into an image before compressing the image, AND you can not, after converting to DNG convert back to original NEF, it is to me obvious that it is indeed a lossy compression, not just 'simple' data compression like zip, tar or whatever other type of data compression you want to compare with, which is truly lossless.
The Nikon lossless compression works entirely on data compression principle, preserving every bit and recreating every bit of data when you edit the raw image, and that can not be done once the image is converted to DNG. That is why many people, who use DNG, also preserve the original NEF, which in my opinion, is a totally pointless work flow. The only reason I can see to use DNG is the ability to share the image with somebody else who is not able to edit NEF, but I might as well use TIFF in that case.
The DNG converter must have knowledge of the camera model concerned, and be able to process the source raw image file, including key metadata to be able to convert and compress. A real lossless compression algorithm NEVER looks at the contents of the data because it is totally irrelevant for the converter to know what type of data you convert and try to compress, since it is based on mathematical patterns and statistics only.
I look at DNG like I look at PDF. A Word document, especially with photographs in it, can be converted to PDF and it may look like you have not lost anything, but yes, you have lost a lot actually and you can never ever recreate the original Word document with the same quality like you have had in your original.
I am planning to purchase Lightroom soon. When I install it, will the 5 different catalogs that I have in Elements 9 automatically form 1 large catalog in Lightroom, with version stacks, keywords, and ratings intact? Or will only the current catalog show up, and if so, how would I get the other 4 catalogs into Lightroom? The reason I am switching to Lightroom is that I can't handle 5 different catalogs easily, so I want to make sure I can combine them into one catalog in Lightroom.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to find an efficient method for converting PNGs to TIFFs for management in LR 4.4. I have tried using Automator for Mac for this purpose. However, the converted TIFF files appear corrupt when imported into LR, although they still work when imported to Photoshop.
Any reason why Automator's conversion would not be acceptable?
Similarly, I tried using GraphicConverter 8 and had the same results.
I had a folder of images in my catalog containing .cr2 and .xmp that I retouched in LR4, I then converted these images to .dng, throwing away my original files. Now when I go to that folder in LR5 (upgraded from LR4), all of my ratings and previous retouches are gone, as all I have is the original raw images in .dng format. I'm guessing tihs is because I didn't or LR5 didn't save my modifications to the sidecar files, before the conversation. Fortunately, I have backups of the original .cr2 & .xmp files and they (or the LR4 catalog) hopefully contain the retouches. With this in mind, what's the best way to reimport the .cr2 & .xmp files, and reconnect them to the same folder in the catalog?
Should I remove the .dng files, restore from backup to the folder and expect LR4 to see everything? Or do I need to import the images back into the catalog? Did converting to LR5 update my catalog, and do I need to restore the previous LR catalog too?
I had recently upgraded to LR 4 and 4.1.Later my (5 year old) computer quit working for various reasons and I replaced it with a new one.In order to get LR running again, I reinstalled it and hooked up with my catalog with the old preview folders .Now, I realize that the default location for the catalog and previews is a Lightroom 4 folder and now a previews.db.
How can I get my working catalog converted to the LR 4 format and location.I do not remember LR 4 or 4.1 asking me if I wanted to convert and asking me where the old catalog was.Or, do I import the old catalog as <a catalog> ?
I am relocating the masters from aperture and importing the files into Lightroom. While I'm doing this, I am converting the NEF files to DNG's.
The questions are, firstly, I thought the DNG's were to replace the NEF files at import? And second, if this is not the case, does that mean that I then have to delete the NEF files as I dont want to use double the disk space"
LR 4.2 will not send D600 NEF files to CS5 or CS6 whenever I right click on the image and chose "Edit In"...is this a glitch that is to be fixed in the upcoming LR upgrade or is this something I can fix now? Converting to a jpeg or dng before I can export to CS is a pain in the rumpus

But I have an image with 240 PPII to 300 PPI but because of the photo competition regulation I also have to increase the resolution from 52x34 cm into 90x60 cm . What is the best way to do it with LR 4 or PS-CS6.In PS I have tried to check "resample image" and change to 300PPI and 90x60cm but the image is less sharp. In LR I did by setting 90x90cm, sharpening for screen (standard) and export it as PSD. but it's also less sharp. My photo competition deadline is in 3 days and I really want to submit my image.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI noticed that when we convert NEF files to DNG in it properties the Date Created and Date Modified are changed to the present date and not the original dates of the files in question. Is there any way to make such a conversion without changing these properties? Yes, I know 'Date taken' does not change--but this info does not show up when you hover a file only the info in its properties. Also am I correct in assuming that this conversion is 100% loss-less, nothing but nothing is lost in the quality and info of the file (besides the file size)?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI converted my catalog from PSE7 to the latest version of Lightroom and it appears that many bad things happened with the dates that I had set on my pictures in PSE7. In some cases, I can see that the Date Time Original and Date Created fields have transferred over but in most cases I cannot see anything other than the original date that I created the picture or brought it into PSE. Since many of my pictures were scans of 100+ years old pictures, I've now lost some important information that I added by using the Adjust Date and Time feature in PSE7. Is there any way to recover this?

She asked me to look for a simple Lightroom preset, which will convert her RAWs into Jpgs with more contrast saturation and sharpening. No fancy effects, just simple. She has Lightroom 3, but has no experience in making presets and neither do I. She is too ill to work on her computer herself, but can instruct me how to use a preset. She needs the preset to make her RAWs available to her partner and children.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIn LR 2.6, when I imported my images (RAW) I would import keeping the original file number, then I would batch rename and convert to dng after they were already in my catalogue. Since I shoot stock, I keep a meticulous record of what I shoot for metadata and keywording purposes. I notice that when I upgraded to LR 3, my in my existing catalogues/folders the original file names are gone, and just the new custom name & sequencing show up.
Unfortunately, I still have to keyword & metadata tag a lot of images, but now the original in-camera numbering is gone. With my new imports what I did to preserve the original numbering, is to import, do my keywording/metadata, then a batch rename. How to keep both. It is just easier to refer to my notes when I have the original number of the image.
have never discovered an answer to this one. currently using LR4 and have previously used LR2 and 3 with the same issue.
my PP workflow is essensially for the web, so I save images at 72ppi for web viewing and yet when I create a web gallery with LR it converts each image to a print resolution of 240dpi.
that's right. changes from ppi to dpi. go figure.
even if ppi (points per inch) is exactly the same as dpi (dots per inch), why the heck is LR making the change and how can I prevent that change from occuring?
Whenever I want an image that I have edited in Photoshop to look good in a browser, I have to convert the image to my monitor's profile for it to look the way it did in Photoshop. So, the workflow is 1) finish editing 2) convert to profile for my monitor's profile 3) Save for web...
Color mgmt makes my head swim but I sort of see why this is. But my question is, most places on the web, I see people are just converting to SRGB for the web and I will say that that does not work for me at all. Does that mean they are talking about converting the color space and not the profile?
I admit that my monitor in its uncorrected stated is way off. That is to say, after I run the Spyder software my monitor colors look a LOT different. I shouldn't think this would matter but I'm just throwing it out there. I am a Windows user.
The reason I am asking this is because when I try converting images on export in LIGHTROOM to my monitor profile it does no good. The image looks terrible in the browser.
Am I missing something? Do I have a setting set wrong somewhere or does everybody have to convert to the monitor profile to get stuff to look right in a browser.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have been using VS since version VS5 and lately VS X2. Now I have upgraded to VS X4 Pro, the box version.
The installation went well and am just performing some tests. I was curious in the new facility with converting 2D to 3D.
I followed the manual and tried with one clip and went to the Share step where I selected Create videofile, selected 3D and DVD as well as AVCHD. My clip was in full HD. I went to the Options menu where I ticked 3D Simulator and Anaglyph.
The result after rendering however was only a white screen but with the sound from the clip. When rendering the same clip to DVD or AVCHD in the "normal way" everything was OK.
