Dec 6, 2011Total buffoon when it comes to getting GIMP to do what I want to do. I'm just practicing with making maps, black lines on a white background, and I've run into some issues I'm wondering if I can get rectified.
1) For whatever reason, the line weight of everything has shifted throughout the file, ending with some lines lighter and grayer than others. Is there a way I can get GIMP to trace all the lines in a uniform black, with uniform thickness?
2) I have tried locking the white background, but often when I select and move my black lines, if I don't click in just the right spot it moves the white background instead, which is really, reeeaaaly aggravating. How Do I get that background to be completely untouchable?
3) In trying to colour the image, I've run into problems with their being a white outline between the colour and the black lines. I think I need to sharpen the image or somesuch? How can one correct this issue?
4) Is there anyway to convert the black dotted lines of the paths tools into straight black lines, in regards to an older file? If not, is there an easy way to trace them?
5) I find the scale too tends to make my image too jagged. I want to take a section of my map, move it too another file and enlarge it to do detail work - what's the best way to do this in order to have a clear image?
6) Any way to translate an image from a MErcator Projection ot a Winkell-Trippel projection, one that works on a Mac?

Sep 23, 2012I would like to draw parts in 3d view which look very basic, i.e. out of a book.
Example:
white block with black lines so you can see it is 3d.background should also be white.
How do i set autocad (2012/2013) to do this. I would like the model space to be the same and not just for printing.

Aug 14, 2013I'm new to Map 3D and not to Civil 3D. I connected to a roads and streams shp file from a ArcGIS directory. Everything came in great and I even was able to get everything named all at once from the attibute directory. The problem is that the features seem to only plot in the colors that I see them as. If I change them all to black, then I see can't see them at all. I have been spening the past 3 hours trying to get them to jus plot black. We also have to stick with stb plot styles in our department.

But the colour range isn't true black and white, so using all sort of different methods such as magic wand selection, colour to alpha etc results in either really messy looking images or a lot of faffing around to correct the final image.

Jan 4, 2012What I am trying to do is change a photo of a bright red abd dark black car to a white car.
In all cases what I seem to be running into is the fact that the programs use the existing colour as the start point and allow only so much variation from that colour (ie about 180 +/- in each primary colour) which does not get me to where |I need to be.
I also tried creating a new layer and filling it with the desired colour then changing the layer from normal to hue. The result ends up being a mix of the original colour and the new colour so for instance if I want a yellow over a blue original colour I end up with some variation of green.
GIMP :: Curve A White To Black Gradient
Mar 27, 2013What I'm trying to do is curve a white to black gradient along a windscreen wiper smear for a rail engine cab window I need to texture. I'm building the cab for an engine in RailWorks and to get the wiper to clear raindrops from the screen in time with the wiper motion the texture needs a gradient applied to it from the wiper rest position to full up position.
In the picture the actual wiper smear is all black. What I need to do is have it all white from the vertical part of the smear or the wiper rest position, to all black at the maximum part of its stroke. This means the gradient will be a lot shallower on the outer edge of the arc and a lot steeper at the inner edge of the arc.

Jan 1, 2013I need to create an outline map for another application. The world is demarcated into areas, separated by black lines. The map must only have black & white pixels.
Some questions about using GIMP for this.
1. Is there a tool I can use to make every non-white pixel black?
2. Is there a tool I can use to eliminate isolated pixels of the wrong color (that is for me a black pixel with all neighbors white or vice versa)?
3. Is there a tool I can use to make the black lines thinner? It is desirable in my application to have the lines be only 1 pixel wide

Aug 3, 2012I'm still working on old family photos (it's a long-term project). This one is from my parents' wedding album, and it's an original black-and-white photo from 1952:
Maybe it's me, but I just don't like all those different gray tones, and I would love to get my mother's gown whiter (which it still is, BTW). I have tried a few things to even things out:
- Brightness/Contrast
- Threshold, Levels, Curves (I have to admit, I don't know what I'm doing with these; it's sort of hit-or-miss)
- Auto adjustments
- Fuzzy select to try to get the darker pieces more like the lighter ones, but the adjustments I just listed aren't doing what I want and are hard to see anyway; I thought the Bucket tool might work but I don't know how to use the gray area I want as a fill color.

Sep 8, 2011I sell a template that has a transparent layer in sections, after saving as jpeg it is supposed to go white, but for some of my customers it recently started going black!I at first thought it had to do with not pasting the layers correctly, but its like this after export, so I don't think that should matter...I've attached a sample image so you can see what is happening. Where it is black, it was originally transparent around the circle image, and normally would save white.

The blur does not look completely right to me because I just used the free select tool and would copy the coin part of the picture out and paste it back on with a different layer and line it up as well as I could. *chose transparency
*added alpha channel*
*cut/lasso item out
*selected invert
*pressed delete on keyboard
*pressed select and none
I then get this picture which looks perfect right???
But when I copy and paste it or open file in paint or anywhere else it ends up like this? I want just the cut out and not the background too but no matter what I do the stupid thing comes with..

Jun 29, 2013i made a animated Gif (Gimp 2.8) but there is something wrong.
i made an escalator with 2 persons on it, they move up the stairs in 12 steps.i made 12 different .XCF's for every step one.
Before converting to animated gif i make the XCF's 1 layer each.when i use the option FILTER > ANIMATION > OPTIMIZE (difference)the animated gif leaves black lines when the persons move (see picture attachment) the export file is very small so that's ok
When i use FILE > EXPORT > (=export as a animated gif) with the option delete previous frame, then the animated Gif looks fine. but the size is 5x bigger than when converting the first option ( i understand why)

Apr 26, 2012Alright, with out pictures, let me try to explain what I'm trying to do I'm trying to create a black and white (grayscale) top-down gradient of half a cone.
I select a circle, and using the cone gradient, start from the middle and go outward to the edges. Great so far, I have a top-down cone, but what I really need is only half of that, as if I was creating a top-down volcano with the top half sliced off and a flat rounded middle.
This is becoming a bump-map so the RGB value must match perfectly the highest point of the gradient with the sliced off part.

For it to look right though, I need to switch the black to white, and vice versa. Is there a way with Photoshop to automatically switch these, instead of having to manually switch them.

Jan 29, 2013In the image below I have an aerial photo of an Island. I need to make it so as water areas are black and land areas are white (not greyscale) almost like a silhouette. My first plan was to draw round the island with a black paint brush and then use the "bucket fill" with a suitable threshold to fill all of the areas up to the black outline with black, however this doesn't work as the bucket fill either breaks through the black line or when I reduce the threshold, doesn't color the water areas solidly.

Basically a CAD program I use only exports PNG files. The CAD program can export in black and white and in color. The color PNG files open fine in CorelDraw. The black and white PNG files just show up as a black filled box.
