AutoCad 3D :: Slice A Surface Into Sections

Nov 26, 2011

Im trying to slice a surface into sections. Im not much of a surface modeller, never really tried. For example the surface is a cylindrical shaped piece. Multiple faces, and pieces. When i slice through it, it slices some prices and others it fails to slice. Confusing. I would upload the piece but i cant due to contract restrictions. But is there any methods of slicing or tips that are a common practice when working with surfaces?

AutoCad 3D :: Can't Slice 3DSolid With Surface

Sep 30, 2013

I have a surface where I would like to make a mould of the inside. I have done this before with other surfaces imported from 3DSmax by placing it in a solid block and use slice, but this one just won't do it!

I get this error: Modeling Operation Error: Inconsistent face-body relationships.

I have attached the dwg file here.

AutoCAD 2013 :: How To Slice Solid With Surface

Jun 1, 2013

I'm using ACAD 2014 Win8 64bit.

I need to slice a cylinder with a surface but the slice command keeps giving error " Inconsistent face-body relationships".

I created the surface from a solid that I created using solid intercept between the cylinder and another solid that the cylinder actually passes through (a housing I have). In my attachment I do not include the housing, just the cylinder, the solid intercept and the surface from the a face of the solid intercept.

I tried increasing the U & V isolines of the surface, and scaling it up so that it isn't bounded by the cylinder, but that didn't work.

I'm willing to try any technique that achieves the same goal - I need the butt of the cylinder to contour to the housing so that I can do a JOIN and have a solid housing with a cylinder sticking out of its face. The inside of the housing is hollow with a 0.05 inch wall.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Cross Sections With A Surface Mask

Feb 4, 2013

We want to show two surfaces, an existing ground and a proposed ground, on a cross section. When the proposed ground meets up with existing ground, it would be nice for the line to end. With just existing ground continuing on. The surface is data referenced, and I would like to not break either of them. I thought adding a surface mask would cause the proposed surface to stop at the mask, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: River Bottom Surface From 3DPolyline Sections

Sep 4, 2012

Is there an easy way to create a tin surface from 3d polylines that are generated by actual measurements of a river/ditch or imported from Hec-Ras (River Analysis -extension)?

The problem seems to be that the triangles should be long and narrow (like the ditch bottom in the example) instead of normal triangles the triangulation method normally generates. (The triangles in the example are generated by 3dwin -program).

When using Hec-Ras one way to go around this problem is to interpolate sections (XS:s) with very short distance. Hec-Ras does the interpolation very well, but I would like to have a better solution without tricks with other programs. Also in the long rivers the result is a very large file.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Sample Line / Surface And Cross Sections

Nov 22, 2013

I'm working on cross sections and ran into a problem.  I had to edit my surface but it wouldn't cooperate with me.  So instead, I just erased the whole surface and restarted it.  After I got my surface the way I like it, I added my sample lines to where they are supposed to be.  Problem is, my cross sections turned out blank.

So for now, I skipped to create a surface profile and see both of my surfaces available on the bottom.  The old one I deleted and the newly created one.  It won't let me go to the bottom and erase the old deleted surface.  When I go into my toolspace-prospector....it only shows my newly created surface and nothing more.  Is this a reason why my cross sections come up blank?

I'll show you a pic of my toolspace with just the current surface and another pic of the "create a surface profile" showing that it still has both the old and new (all in CAPS) but it won't let me delete the original.

I am weeding the labels out based on the change in grade of the section profile and making the label text high very small of the labels I do not want to see. But the first label returns ??? because there  is no grade coming in so I get ??? instead of something usefull like null. Any way to convert?? to something you can evaluate and use.

GIMP :: Slice Image Using Filter-web-slice Function?

I need gimp to slice by columns (start in the top left corner slice each grid down the column then proceed to the next column. Right now all I can get gimp to do is cut by rows. Normally gimps function would be fine but I need the image labeled a particular way so I can use the individual files in a map for a game. I'm making a 118 images so renaming them by hand would take too long.

How to use the slice command. I'm really not that familiar with 3d. I've done a few but when it comes to roof, I always got stuck into that part. In fact I only heard about the command "Slice" here in Cad tutor. I'm practicing 3d with a house. I'm now on the roof part. And I wanna have this on solid. I made this only by 3dface.

AutoCAD .NET :: How To Slice 3D Objects Into Layers

Feb 21, 2012

Is there any way to slice a 3d object into layers ?

Example : a cube, 100*100*100 mm . I want to slice it in 10 layers of 10 milimeters (with the z axis)

My project is based on autocad. I 'm currently developing an addon to autocad that can get x,y,z coordinates of every shape in the drawing. I'm working with laser machines, and our lasers can only be use between -8 mm and 8 mm.

For 2d drawing, it's simple, i don't need slicing, but for 3d shapes, i need to slice to mark it with our lasers.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: How To Correct / Manipulate Surface To Show Proper Flat Surface

Dec 2, 2011

I often have to do storm pond surfaces that (for the purposes of planning) are flat on the bottom. These surfaces are created from a combination of survey data and grading groups and the tin of these surfaces is perfectably acceptable. However, when contours are shown, the flat bottom is shown with contours jig-jagging all over the place.

The attached image shows a comparison of the same pond. The top was created with survey data and grading groups; the bottom was created using contour data only. The generated surface on the top shows the bottom contour going in different directions and has parts where the an expected contour is missing.

How to correct/manipulate the surface to show a proper flat surface?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Reduced Maximum Length For Surface Triangles Causes Surface Holes

Oct 22, 2012

Has instances where you set your tolerance for the maximum triangle lenth to say 50m to reduce the amount of triangles along the edge that run at long distances. When I do this I end up with multiple surface holes and I'm not sure why as there are points in the area.

I thought well maybe it's because i should've reduced my max triangles first then added breaklines. Would this matter? I also thought I could add a line to the surface to fix the holes vs. deleting surface lines along the entire edge of a surface for many many miles.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Editing Existing Surface Using Edit Surface Command

Nov 14, 2012

I am trying to add points into a surface. I have done this before without any problems, but now I am having issues.

When I ID points which makes up the surface it gives me the correct Z level e.g. 24.5m, however when I hover over the surface it shows me the surface name and a different z level e.g. 0.65m. What is the reason for this difference in z levels? I think this may be causing the issue I am having when I add new points.

I select the surface and use the 'edit surface command' in the ribbon, choosing add point.

When I add a point at the level I require(23.89m), it puts it in a lot higher than the surrounding area, so I tried to put the point in to the lower z levels (0.4m) it puts it in a lot lower!

AutoCAD Inventor :: Curved Surface - How To Increase Volume Of Surface At Certain Points Only

Apr 10, 2013

how I can add more volume to curved object surface? Say for example I have a plastic cup.You can think of this as cylinder object ,which was the shelled out using the shell tool and then had its base sealed.

Now at certain parts, I would like to increase the thickness and then blend it the rest of the surface(may be chamfer its edges) .

At certain parts on curved surface I would like to add an extra mm, I think if the surface was flat I would just sketch the shape, then extrude it by few mm and smooth the edges by doing a chamfer

But how can this be done on surface that is curved? Or multi curved for edges?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Ribs On Curved Surface / Trimming To Complex Surface

I have the board modeled: (see attached)

Now what i want to do is generate those ribs as seen in the picture.

I tried creating a block that intersected with the board and tried to split the rib at the surface, but to no avail. I think the issue has something to do with the curve of the board in two directions, but i can't seem to get it right.

if you are having trouble visualizing what i'm asking about, look at this. I want to be able to figure out the exact shape of those center ribs to print and eventually cut out of wood.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Import Surface Into Revit To Merge Surface And Buildings Together?

Jul 29, 2013

I have a project involving 3 programs. I am creating a planned development in 3d to be 3d printed when finished. The project is a 5 acre tract containing 8 buildings. I have built the surface in C3D and each building in Revit. The buildings are not in the same Revit file. For my solid work, I will bring the files over into 3ds Max Design to section into smaller quadrants to build in the 3d printer.

The questions:

Would it be better to import the surface into Revit to merge surface and buildings together?

Would it be better to import the buildings into C3D to merge entities?

Would it be better to bring those entities into 3ds Max and then merge them into one? Will 3ds Max Design allow me to insert entities accurately in the environment?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Slice Sheet Metal

Nov 13, 2011

I was designing a part which consisted in a circular sheet metal part with a hole in the center, and a bent rectangular radii-oriented section. The second feature is the one I want to give focus in this thread.

Take a circular sheet metal with a diameter of 30 mm and a thickness of 1 mm. Now, to achieve the bent section one would perform - in a workshop or any other equivalent - two parallel slices of about 5 mm in length with a distance from each other of 4 mm. The slice would start in the circumference and end somewhere nearer to the center of the disc, but not parallel to a radius (since its parallel to another slice 4 mm apart as said before). After the slicing was done, one would bend the section between the slices 90 degrees to any of the sides.

Now, in Inventor I couldn't find a way to do this. I couldn't just slice a line through the disc. I worked it around by cutting rectangles of 0.2 mm in width and with the length of the desired slices, and then using the folding command to bend it 90 degrees. Is it possible to perform this so called slices?
