AutoCad :: 3D Section Of 2D Polylines
Nov 22, 2012
Over the past year I have been working on quickly generating vertical cross sections through 2D lines. I have exhausted all of my connections with fellow AutoCAD users and I still haven't found an efficient solution.
The material I'm working with is a bunch of polylines that kind of resemble branching tree roots from dozens of trees. The polylines sprout from seed points and then branch and cross each other as they move down. I need to generate many vertical sections through the lines. Since the material is composed of lines a slice along a plane would only generate points. I need to take a slice of a volume of lines so that the paths are preserved.
I have tried creating two vertical parallel planes and then using the slice tool on each plane. This would break up all of the polylines at the intersection with the planes so I can manually delete all segments that are not between the planes. This is time consuming, and also leaves room for error when manually deleting line segments.
The ideal tool for efficiency and accuracy would be Section Line. I could create a section line, convert it to a volume, and generate a 3D section with the option to save the section to a new file. The problem with this is that the section tool only works on solid 3D objects. I have considered sweeping a small diameter circle along each polyline to give them volume, but this would take days to weeks of work.
Is there a better tool or method for creating 3D sections of a volume of polylines? Are there any tricks that can be used to allow the 3D section tool to work with the polylines? Maybe I could convert them to a different type of object.
I am using AutoCAD 2013.

Getting bizarre display in the Section Editor of the 3D Polylines that are in the drawing. The green line is the EG ground section.
In 2013, this same drawing displays normal, we don't see the 3D polylines in the Section Editor.

As the above mentioned, I have a drawing drawn using polylines with width from someone. The width of the line are suppose to represent area,
To put things into prospective, here is an example:
The polyline is 10 unit long and with a width of 2 unit wide. If i explode that polyline, it will become a single polyline without width. The line are suppose to represent 10 unit long and 2 unit wide; representing an area.
My question is is there a way to change the line above directly from polyline with width to a close polyline (4 x polylines) of 10 unit long and 2 unit wide.

Is there a way of converting 3d polylines to polylines with an elevation?
I have a dwg of contour information, the contours are 3d polylines, because they are contours the z value is constant all along the line, so there no question what the elevation of the polyline would need to be.
I need to do this as I then need to import the dwg into a GIS programme called MapInfo whch doesn't read 3d polylines.
I have access to AutoCAD 2004 or 2005LT.

I'm looking to basically do what this video shows:
[URL]........
I just want to create a section from the point cloud, but the point cloud won't allow me to select it as an object in the 'Generate 2D/3D section' dialogue as it's not a solid/surface.
On an unrelated note, I find snapping to the point cloud impossible - is there an option in OSNAP that I'm missing? I've tried this with attached PCGs and RCP point clouds, no difference.

I have lots of section views with some surfaces and pipes. Unfortunately, in a number of section views pipes are not shown in full height because the section view level range is too little. What I am wondering is - is it possible to automatically adjust section level ranges so that they fully include pipe sections? Please see also the image in the attachment.

When i am creating section sheets from multiple section views ,section sheet view port scale changes.I did set it correctly in my template.
For example it changs from 1:150 to 1:150_1
Then in section sheets scetions views are not displaying correctly.
When i change view port scale manually it shows correctly. But it should do to all sheets.
What should I do?
In model spacr multiple section views are showing correctly.

In my section editor my labels show up correctly and in all the locations I want. But then, in my cross section file, I look in my section views and they are completely different. When I try to label more points under the Code Set Styles, they won't even show up on my section views.

I think I just haven't done this in a while and can't find the right setting.
I have existing sections.
I have section views.
I created a corridor.
How do I add the corridor section to my existing cross-section in the section views?
I can view them in the corridor section editor. But I should also be able to add the corridor section to my section views, right?
To plot them, do I NEED to do this through Sheets Sets? I don't have experience with sheet sets yet.
I don't use Civil 3D often enough anymore. Still learning much about the new interface and pulling a design together.

I've got a corridor where the section editor does not show a section that the corridor has created. My frequency is set to 25' with high/low points along curves. At station 22+75, in the model space the corridor shows a section being created (image #2). However, I cannot edit or even see that section in the section editor (image #1). The first screen shot shows the list of stations for the corridor in the editor while the second screenshot shows the model space at the problem station. This is in the middle of a region, so there shouldn't be any issues with other assemblies or regions.
In the section editor, Sta 22+74.91 is listed, skips 22+75, then lists 23+00. I am needing to manually adjust the cross slopes of my lanes. If I view the surface there is a weird dip because at station 22+75 the default slope of my lane is -2%. I cannot edit station 22+75, so I cannot adjust the cross slope of the lanes.
What is causing the section editor to not even recognize a section? How can I edit the cross slope at station 22+75 if the editor doesn't even display that section?

In the drawing view below, I want to section the green assembly only within the red section. I've tried this with a breakout and it doesn't work. There doesn't seem to be a way to exclude the green from the section and yet include it in the breakout.

So, I we were taught autocad at hour school but not autocad architecture because apparently autocad architecture is too "advanced" for us. so now I need to draw window details (thermally broken aluminum frame window with insulating glass unit) but it is so much work in autocad however I was told that I can just draw a window in autocad architecture and just cut a section and just make a few adjustments to get the window detail.

I am having an issue when producing a section view with my corridor. I have a corridor and corridor surface, as well as an existing ground surface. I create a sample line group and sample EG, Corridor Surface, and Material. When I produce a section view I get 4 sections in the view: EG, Corridor Surface(with the corridor surface naming convention), and an additional section simply called "Corridor Surface".
This last section is strange in that it seems to be using the correct assembly, but not targeting the correct features. Also it has grips at all of the vertices which I havent seen before.
And the strangest part, when I click on properties for this section and go to section data, the columns for Description and Data Source are blank.
If there is no data source, then where is this section coming from, and why is it showing up when I did not specify that it be created. This is a real mind boggler to me and makes no sense. Screenshot attached.

My solid model is imported from IGES file format. I'd like to make a plane at specified location (perpendicular from the surface), and I'd like to have a cross sectional geometry cut by that plane. (attached pic.)
1. How can I make a plane following perpendicular line from the surface?
2. How can I export the cross sectional geometry?

I have drawing with lots of pol)lines which are intersecting themselves.
I would like to divide all selected lines by the point of intersection.
I have this
[CommandMethod("BRA", CommandFlags.UsePickSet | CommandFlags.Redraw)] public static void TestIntersectAllLines() {
Document doc = Autodesk.AutoCAD.ApplicationServices.Application.DocumentManager.MdiActiveDocument; Database db = doc.Database; Editor ed = doc.Editor;
[code].....
But it seems to doesn't work properly - some lines are not erasing, some are not intersecting in each point.

I have drawings at the moment where I need to convert some lines to polylines. I know you can use PEDIT and PEDITACCEPT=1 but i want to match properties at the same time.
Just wondering if there is a comand or lisp routine that duplicates the MATCHPROPERTIES command but converts lines to plolylines at the same time, this way all i would need to do is type in the appropriate command and select my source polyline and get multiple duplicate polylines by clicking the lines I wish to change?

In the ipt. sheet metal file, we create the flat and export face as a dxf file to use in our cnc software.
The problem is that our shop guy cannot open the dxf in the cnc software (he gets an error) unless we open the dxf in Autocad and explode it and resave. For some reason, Inventor creates the dxf with the perimeter of the part as a polyline.
Is there a setting that could keep it from making it a polyline.
It is time consuming to have to go into Autocad, explode and resave every sheet metal part.
We use Inventor 2010.
