AutoCAD Inventor :: How To Add Custom IProperty To Parts List
Jan 16, 2012
I am trying to add a custom iProperty from my assembly to the drawing parts list. According to the help wiki, I'm supposed to click Column Chooser > New Property > Custom Properties List (click here to see the relevant wiki page--also see the attached screenshot called Custom Property Help.png).
When I click on new property, there is nothing about Custom Properties List.

On the main sheet of my drawing I have the overall Parts List. Shows almost all parts except for the few that we don't want to list. On the second sheet I inserted a Parts List to show only parts that are shown in a detail on that page, made the rest non-visible.
On the main sheet there is an item (#13) that has a QTY of 3. Two of those Three are optional parts. What I'm trying to do is insert a custom part into the Parts List, give it an item number of 13A and put in the description "OPTIONAL", then do an Override in the balloon to show 13A.
I get it in the Parts List, Apply it, close it, save the drawing. Looking at the Parts List, item #13A is there, but item #14 is gone. I go back into the Parts List and 13A is there and there's a blue box around the item # and the description. I uncheck Static Value and number 14 shows up (item # and the description).
Then I go over to sheet two, open that Parts List and it lists 13A at the bottom with all the info I added in sheet one and it's non-visible. Go back to sheet one, open the Parts List and there is no 13A to be found.

I'm looking to see if there is a way to link the revision number to a custom iProperty in the same part. Our laser requires a specific output for programming, but I only want this to show up on actual lasered parts as we don't need it on parts that are sawcut. Basically what I would like to do is create a custom iProperty that I can link to the title block for that reads RV:<Revision>. Is there a way to do this? I'd rather not create a separate drawing template for lasered parts as we've got about 100 templates for our various customers the way it is.

I'm having a bit of trouble creating a new parts list style. I really want to have two styles to choose from in all three of my .idw templates. I understand how to create them but I can't save them to the library.

How to create a list of values to chose from for an iProperty? I can create a multi-value parameter and set the iproperty equal to it, then create a form that calls up the parameter...but there has to be a better way. I'd like to create a template with iProperties that are standardized. For example, we have a bunch of labs in our business. I created a custom iproperty for the labs (so that this property could be searched in vault). However, if I stop there, users will find all sorts of ways to botch the lab names. Therefore, when you run a search for a lab, you may not find all the files associated with that lab due to a mispelling. Forcing values chosen from the iProperty list would prevent this from happening.
I was hoping there would be a way to do this with iLogic forms, but you can't create a list for iProperties...at least I don't think you can.

Is there a way to change an iProperty, specifically the iProperties->Project->Project field for multiple parts automatically.
I use the iLogic Design Copy Tool to copy over an entire project, and for the most part the only changes is the project number.
I didn't see a way to change this in the Design Copy Tool, possibly there is some other tools that can do this that I don't know about. But if not, I am assuming a small script (VBA??) would be required to do this? whether it is in Inventor or just an outside program to carry out this change.
I found this old thread, but it seems that people just found another way to do this?
[URL]
My workflow would follow something like this:
-Use iLogic Design Copy Tool to copy over project to new folder
-Open up full assembly
-Run rule or script to update all parts in assembly with new Project iProperty
-Save
-update the drawings as I need, (they will all need to be reviewed as some parts will be modified anyways)

I am migrating our old Inventor data to our new system. I will do an ilogic script for that.
I know how to add custom iProperties with iLogic but how can I remove them? Is it possible with iLogic? I would like to clean out all old iProperties that we don't need anymore.

I can't get Inventor 2013 show a custom iproperty correct. My iLogic rule is this:
iProperties.Value("Custom", "myvol")=volume = iProperties.Volume
But the custom iProperty is a Yes or No.Had no problem with this in Inventor 2011.

In the parent assembly a text iproperty exists called "child list". I would like to set this value via an ilogic rule that does the following:
For each child in the assembly where paremeter "include" = true, add the value of iproperty "filename" to a comma delimited list that will become the value of text Iproperty "child list" in the parent assembly.
The result should look something Like iproperty"child" = "filename1,filename2,filename3,filename4, etc..."
The rule must iterrogate all children, both parts and assemblies, and must go beyond 1st level children.
The output does not have to be comma delimited but must be delimited with something (eg tab, :, etc..)
The number of children is unknown
Is there a character limit imposed on a text iproperty?

I've been using iLogic. I'm creating a template assembly that will be used for multiple jobs. Therefore, the job number will be changing. I want a custom iProperty in ALL parts and sub-assemblies (cleverly call it "Job #" maybe) that I can include an a separate property called "Drawing #" which whose value will be [some text]-<Job #>-[some more text]. I want to be able to update all the "some text" parts manually for each component, but I want the Job # to update automatically. I need this property because I have a column in all my Parts Lists called "Drawing #" which tells the drawing number for any given part or assembly.
Ultimately what I want to do is open a text or Excel file, enter the job number, open my Inventor drawing, and have every Drawing # entry in every parts list magically update to the correct job number.
I've managed to use iLogic to do just that with a single .ipt/.iam file. But I have dozens upon dozens of components in the main assembly. I'd like to run some rule or hit some button or do something that will cause the Job # property to update for ALL sub-assemblies and parts, so that all my parts lists reflect the change.

way to get multiple lines of text in an iProperty? I am using a custom iProperty named "Title" so users can insert the drawing title into the title block using the custom iProperty. The only problem is that the title comes out all on one line and goes outside the title block. Should I be using iproperties or is there a better way?

I have gotten in the habit of using a leader text with a custom iproperty to do material call outs on my drawings. I have been doing the first one then copy/pasting the leader onto each piece i want to call out.
This worked flawlessly in 2010 and has worked well previously in 2012. For some reason it is not working at all in this particular .idw.
work flow is to create the first instance, copy. right click outside the view border and select paste. Then attach to as many different parts as needed.
attached is the error message I get.
The custom iproperty is text. 1/2 a36 or 4x4x3/8 Angle

I found this code to create a custom iProperty in the current, open document:
Dim propertyName As String = "MyProperty"Dim propertyValue as String = "Test Value"customPropertySet = ThisDoc.Document.PropertySets.Item("Inventor User Defined Properties")Try prop = customPropertySet.Item(propertyName)Catch ' Assume error means not found customPropertySet.Add("", propertyName)End TryiProperties.Value("Custom", propertyName) = propertyValue
I have a iLogic rule that goes through each component of an assembly, counts how many times it occurs in the assembly, and then assigns that value to an iProparty (i.e. it inserts the total quantity of the part in some iProperty). Currently, however, it assigns the value to a default iProperty value, "Authority". I'd like, instead, for it to assign it to a custom iProperty called "Total QTY". However, I don't know how to tell Inventor to do the above code for a component in the assembly rather than the assembly itself. Below is my entire code. I've labeled where I'm guessing the above code should go. How I'd modify the above code to create the iProperty in the component being processed by the rule at that point?

In the attached file there are two custom iProperties that cannot be perminantly updated nor deleted. The iProperties are "size" and "purch_qty". These iProperties were created and set using a custom macro but they are of course accessable via the standard iProperties dialog. I can change the values for these particular iProperties but as soon as I save the file they revert back to their original values. Same goes for trying to delete them. All other iProperties, custom and otherwise, seem to behave normally.
The sketch in this file originated with a 2D DXF file for a vendor supplied aluminum extrusion quite a few years back. The original file has been copied (save-as...) to about 20 different files over the years. The iProperties in question were added years after most of the files were created, Each file is exibiting the same problem. These files are used in a LOT of assemblies. The thought of recreating all these files from scratch and updating the assemblies is not very inviting.
No other IPT files seem to be having this issue.

I was using virtual parts to add nuts and bolts to a drawing in 2013
I can make a VP bolt in the assembly, no problem, set it's size, weight, etc.
In the VP itself, there is no option for number of bolts I want it to emulate. For arguement's sake the weight was 1 pound per bolt (they are big bolts).
I can go into the BOM and say quantity 60, hit done and save the assembly.
If i open the drawing, the parts lists shows 60lbs for the 60 bolts total - which it should when summing the weight.
The problem is the BOM/assembly. If the weight of my assembly (without bolts) is 10,000lbs, the assembly sees the VP weighing 1lb and says the total weight is 10,001 lbs. Am i going to have to pattern a fake part to get this to work right? Shouldn't the total weight take into account the quantity set in the Bom??

Is there a way to display the density of materials that are assigned to varius parts in the parts list on a drawing? I don't need the mass of the parts I just need the material density to show up next to their respective parts.
For example, if I have a part with [steel mild] material assinged to it (no matter the size) I need a column in the BOM on the drawing to show: 490.684 lbs/ft^3. "Worry when there's something to worry about."

I have an assembly with a lot of purchased parts. I need to create a buy out list for purchasing. I've done this many times in the past and have a template set up for this purpose.
So now the problem, In this assembly, I have subassemblies showing up on my parts only parts list.
One of the subassemblies cinsists of two purchased parts. Both parts are set to purchased in the Bill of materials. If I do a parts only list on this assembly, it works as expected, showing two purchased parts. However, if I put that assembly into a higher level assembly, A parts only parts list shows the assembly instead of the individual parts.

Been working over an idw MANY times due to project lag.Today I opened it up and tried adding balloons to an already ballooned assembly.
The parts list has not changed, and is "structured".But, if I try adding balloons, they tag each part, not the entire assembly.
Also, I verified this by trying to add another parts list, which defaults to "parts only".
I can't show my data set, b/c it's HUGE, plus it's proprietary.

I have a .idw that I'm trying to make a parts list on. I select parts list and highlight everything. There are two screws that are not showing up on the parts list. I cannot select them manually either. It's acting like they are not there. Even if I do a complete parts list (adding the assemblies parts into one big list), they still don't show up.
How can I select these parts? What is wrong with them that they do not show up in the parts list?

When inserting a content center part for which we have to choose a material, we would like to have a custom material as a default (material with name: "No material selected"). So when selecting no material for this part (for example when the user forgets to select a specific material), the default material (in this case material "No material selected") will be active. In this way, we can see in one view across the BOM which parts have no material assigned yet.
How can this be achieved in the content center (editor)?

I've been using the "Phantom" BOM Structure to roll up duplicate .ipt's when I have more than one sub-assembly within a higher .iam and it has worked well.
Question - is it possible to adjust settings so that the .iam that I "Phantom" itself remains as a visable line item in the Parts List while still rolling up like .ipt's?

As an academic interest I was trying to convert Brian’s code for exporting Parts list with thumbnail to VB.net 2012. I just modified the below code to remove the vb6 support. I am using VS 2012 and Inventor 2014. The end result on the word report thumb nail for some parts are not visible. It goes to the error code and putting the text instead of thumb nail. At the same time Brian’s code as it is (used the exe file to install it) works fine on the same parts list with all thumb nail.
