AutoCAD Inventor :: Frame Generator Assembly - Unable To Modify Base 3D Sketch
Aug 2, 2013
I've just started working on a frame generator assembly I was modelling earlier this year; I can't seem to modify the base 3D sketch. The feature which looks like the original 3D sketch is now called the "Reference Skeleton" and I am unable to modify it at all.
I am working on a copy of the original part as I "save as" the whole master assembly when I was last working on the model. I don't know if this would have effected anything.

I get these pink points in my sketch for the frame. How do I get rid of them?
Right click and delete doesn't work. I get all sorts of errors because of these.

I have created a chassis wireframe using 2D and 3D sketches. In frame generator, I am able to insert frame members on the 2D lines, but not the 3D lines. I can put frame members on 3D lines ONLY if I use the "insert members between points" placement, but then I can't merge several members together to create 1 tube (can I?).
How do I put frame members on 3D sketch lines using the "insert members on edges" placement?
OR
How do I merge tube members when they are inserted using the "insert members between points" placement?

I have created a frame using frame generator. I did so by creating a sketch in a (dumb) part outlining where i want the steels to go etc. I then added the steels and some bolted connections etc. i did this back in Jan.
Today i need to edit the frame and have reopened the model to find that the connection between my definition sketch and the 'skeleton' has been lost and the frame is displayed wrong.
Is there a way to reconnect the skeleton and my sketch so i don’t have to redraw the model?

I added another extrusion profile to my structural shapes library, using the same method as the others a few years ago. It works, but the new extrusion now shows up with its profile sketch, start and end planes, and driven dimension visible. The old stuff doesn't (like I would expect). I have all planes in the published part turned off, not marked for export, etc., just like in the old ones. How do I turn this off? Inventor 2012 SP2.
When I open the extrusion separately, the work features to not display. But, the it's also shown as the "default" color not as material. Why does it default to "default" not "as material" like everything else?

I have made a assembly with frame generator in AIP2013 and then added some additional custom beams to it.Now I have uppgraded to AIP2014 and want to copy some parts within the assembly but nothing happends.
I have tried both "ctrl+C, ctrl+V" and "right click copy+paste" without any success.

I have created multiple assemblies using my favorite thing - the frame generator, and I want to copy the entire assembly and use it to represent another model for the next customer while still preserving the original assembly. If I recall Vault has a way to do this by using Copy Design. Since I am not using Vault is there another way to do this?

Inventor Pro 2013.
I would like to make the part named "Frame_base" an assembly on its own. see the attachment. I am new to Inventor and I thought I could demote it but the selection is grayed out. The main reason I want to do this is because I would like to create a 2D drawing of it with a parts list to give to the welder. This will be my first drawing and maybe I'm doing this wrong. It appears that I need to bring in the base view file, and I don't see a way to do that unless the frame is its own assembly.

I want to make some points in 3D sketch base on the Coordinate System that I defined (UCS).Is there any solution to make these points in 3D sketch just by inputing their coordinates in my UCS?
Example: the new UCS origin has (x,y,z) coordinates from the origin.and one of the points has the coordinates of (x',y',z') from the UCS.
So from the origin it has the coordinates of (x+x',y+y',z+z').Is it possible to just use (x',y',z') from UCS directly to get my point?

I'm running Inventor 2013 professional and I want to design a steel structure for stress analysis. But I can't find any DIN H-beams (HEB, HEA in accordance to DIN 1025) in the "insert frame member selection".
Isn't it possible to use DIN H-beams in Inventor frame generator? Can I add my own parts to the library for stress analysis?

Coming from a solidworks background, i frequently use weldments, or Inventor's equivalent - frame generator.
Wondering if there was a solidworks 'end cap' equivalent.
[URL] essentially a weldment driven and generated part which doesn't need much thinking about.

It seems to me that there is a major disconnect between using the Vault and using Frame Generator. When creating a frame using frame generator all the parts are automatically named by frame generator. It gives you a name such ANSI W8x13 00000001 for an I-beam for instance. As you create more components (I-beams in this case) the number on the end of the file name increases so you have 0000002, 00000003 etc. After I'm finished with the assembly I will check it into the vault.
The issue comes up when I go to create a new assembly a few days later using the same I-beam. The naming convention for the I-beam is exactly the same for the new assembly file. It will start over and give me a new ANSI W8x13 00000001 file. Now when I go to check it into the vault I get the "cannot check in due to vaulting restrictions" error because the two files have been named the exact same thing. It seems crazy that Inventor would be set up this way considering how vault works. The only thing I have found is that you can click the browse button and rename the file. This is a serious headache though because I have to come up with a unique name (or pre-fix) for EVERY part of EVERY frame that I generate. And lets just say it's not hard for me to create 100+ new parts a day using frame generator.

The frame generator gives the wrong cut length (G_L) when using double end treatment "Trim and Extend to Face"
See attached screen shot: The correct length of the diagonal RHS should be 1852 mm after trimming the RH end to btm and rh member. As far as I remember this is an old problem never been fixed. Is a lot of work manually altering the cut length of 20-30 member in the BOM.

I created a frame using 150 x 75 BS4 channel section in 2011/12 (can't remember which) however it was created before the BOM length fix (all lengths stated are not necessarily the lengths of the beams). In order to fix this I need to redraw the frame, which is fair enough, however I am unable to find the BSI standard channel section. In fact, BSI has seemed to vanish from my library completely, I can not even place a component from the BSI library.
I have had a look around the C:/Programdata/autodesk/inventor2011(or 12 or 13)/contenetcentre/libraries and have found parker, gost, DIN etc but no BSI. I have not used the frame generator/place component in 2013 yet so no idea if this was from install or not.

I have been playing around with Inventor (moving across from Solidworks) and am wondering how I 'detail plates' I am becomeing familiar with the Frame Generator to create all of my members, but it seems quite disconnected in the creation process create a plate.
I currently am creating the 3D sketch (in a part) creating the (base) plate in the same part and then in the assebley I am using the frame Generator (See image) to create the members.
How to correctly include the plates as part of the design process.

Recently the company bought a single license of Inventor to test out and see if it meets our company goals and is efficient to use for what we do. I've been working with the frame generator, which is fairly easy to use and make the initial assembly, but I am having trouble and breaking out individual sections to detail.
I am stuck with using LOD for this platform, provide a general workflow procedure of the best way of creating assemblies and subassemblies.
What I am currently using Inventor is to build a condenser platform. Generally we like to weld as much of it in the shop before it goes to the field for final assembly. The platform consists of beam supports, grating, stairs, and handrail. In this case we would generally take sections of the handrail and weld in the shop, we would also have the stairs with the handrail welded on it as well. I would like to refrain from converting this to weldment.
I have tried promoting and demoting but this loses constraints and references. Also I cannot create a single skeleton of the whole frame at one time because a lot of the frame members depend on the other members structural sizes (flange width, height, etc.).
I've read of people creating multiple subassemblies and grounding them, but I would like to think that their has to be away that I could just build off of the base skeleton and not have to cycle through different assemblies.
