AutoCAD Inventor :: Adding New Factory Members To Legacy IPart
May 7, 2012We use Inventor 2012 and will most likely upgrade to 2013 between Christmas and New Year's, when our company traditionally shuts down for a week. I recently had occasion to edit an iPart for a hex head machine screw, originally modeled some years ago by someone who's no longer with the company, to add some sizes. As you'll see, the member names are Hex Head Machine Screws-001.ipt, Hex Head Machine Screws-002.ipt, etc. Why does the table go from Hex Head Machine Screws-002 to Hex Head Machine Screws-290, you ask? I'll get to that in a minute.
This iPart was modeled several Inventor versions ago, when the operator had no control over the iPart factory member names. When Inventor did start offering this control, I jumped right on it. In any iParts I modeled from there on out, I used the capabilities of MS-Excel to create abbreviated part descriptions for the iPart factory member names.
Last week I needed to go into this part and add some sizes. If I added the new sizes in sequence by thread size and screw length, they were going to slot in between the existing Hex Head Machine Screws-002 and Hex Head Machine Screws-003. The next unused number was 290, so I made the new factory members Hex Head Machine Screws-290 thru -296, as per the attached screen grab. Naturally the suffixes on the factory member names are out of sequence, and it isn’t very elegant.
As I see it, the other alternatives would have been:
1) Put the new sizes at the end of the list (worse, IMO).
2) Put the new sizes in sequence and renumber the factory members so they were sequential down the line. If I’d done this, then every factory member (say, Hex Head Machine Screws-011) after the newly added ones would have stood for a different size HHMS than it did before, which would have been really bad.
3) Rework the table so the existing names with numerical suffixes went away and were replaced by mnemonic names, as on my more recently modeled iParts. This would have resulted in assemblies looking for factory members under names that no longer existed, but it would have been possible to substitute the screws under their new names. I should mention that we are using the Vault, which makes matters easier.
I would have liked to take approach (3), but I was under some time pressure to finish an assembly using these fasteners.

Nov 1, 2012I've created a main assembly containing several ipart components. With the following rule I can read the model parameters, but not the user parameters of the iparts:
A = Parameter("Part1:1", "d0")
If I create a component, insert it in the main assembly and make it an ipart afterwards, the user parameters can be read out with ilogic. But if I insert the same ipart again, the user parameters can not be read out anymore. Model parameters are no problem.

I can't seem to find anything about ilogic automation / rule creation / ilogic in general, in the object browser at all.

Is there a Simple way to add an Ilogic Rule (External or Internal) to an event trigger with a VBA Macro or iLogic Rule?
I would like to automate adding an iLogic rule to an Event Trigger when we update our old drawings.
The details of the Rule I am trying to call is as follows:
Rule Name = Save On Close Commands
Event = Before Close
We currently have Inventor 2013 and 2014. If it is not possible in 2013, is it possible in 2014?

AutoCAD Inventor :: IPart Members Are Missing IMates
Nov 4, 2011I'm having an issue with imates not showing up on members of an ipart. If I open the factory file the imates are there, but if I open the member file the imates are not there. This is causing an imate error in my assembly because when I need to switch members out (at the assembly level) the imates are not holding because they're not there!?!
I've even tried "Dirtying" the file by creating a plane and then deleting it, doing a save, then a generate files. This doesn't work either. Why won't the imates show up correctly on the members that they're supposed to show up on?

Aug 5, 2013We are facing a strange behaviour, since we switched from network folders to Vault 2011 Professional.
If we create a new revision of an iPart factory and make changes to that factory, members that are placed in assemblies already reflect the changes, although they have not been revisioned and re-generated. It seems like the member is already fetching the latests revision of the factory from Vault by default.

Jun 5, 2013When I enable the structured bom in an iAssembly that contains an iPart it is attempting to generate all members before it will enable the bom. This doesn't work as the iAssembly and iPart have 1800 variations each. Our servers cannot handle taking up that amount of space. I did the exact same procedure for a different part and the bom did not populate in this manner. The only difference is that the iProperties comment changes based on which part is selected.
Also, description is set using =<comments>
Stock number is set using =<part number>
AutoCAD Inventor :: Extracting Sheet Metal Properties In IPart Members
Jun 22, 2013I have many I-parts that have many members. All these members differ in size, sheet metal style and material.
That's a nice case for an I-part right? We can manage the members in a table, and we can create flat patterns & drawings that go with these members, so when we get an order for a machine, we don't have to touch any of these components.
The things is, that I want to show the length & width of the flat pattern, the sheet metal style, and the K-factor of the I-parts members in the parts lists of the assemblies they sit in.
I have 4 custom properties for this. Flat_Pattern_Length; Flat_Pattern_Width; Sheet_Metal_Style; Sheet_Metal_k_Factor
These properties show up on the parts lists. I use Inventor 2012 (with Solidworks Enterprise PDM)
I have tried to make a rule in the factory that fills these properties. I fire the rule on "save document". My train of thought: Every time Inventor saves a member, it applies the factory rule, and fills the member properties.
Results are extremely unstable. I have seen all members generated with correct properties, I have also seen that literally nothing happens on the members. There are some brute force workarounds (edit member scope, run rule) but this is not a sustainable solution.
I cannot imagine it would be so hard to get the sheet metal information available as properties for these files! The use of I-parts is a fixed constraint, and the use of those property names is an almost fixed constraint.

Jul 7, 2013Inventor does not think an update is required for iAssembly members after changes to attributes on a client feature are saved. In our workflow we avoid rebuild all because it causes subassemblies to change, so we force an update by changing a parameter. Through the API is there a good way to indicate that our change was significant enough for members to need updating?

Aug 2, 2013I need a way to run a rule which is saved in my top-level assembly using iLogic rule which is saved in a part file in the parent assembly.
I have even tried using an external rule in a txt file, but that gives the error "Component: This function can only be used in an assembly." - which makes no sense to me. I hope I am just missing something simple. I cant believe with all its other strengths, that iLogic would be so limited in that regard. Why is there not simply a snippet under the 'Run Other' that allows you to specify an assembly file and the rule name? (like there is for running a rule in a component from the assembly)

Dec 6, 2011I want to simply set a custom iproperty as the Description in each part file within my assembly. I can do this easily at part level with ilogic but I want to be able to run the rule from the assembly level and all the parts run the rule. I am struggling to find a way to do this.
I think this may be the best method I have found but I think it must be far easier?

Dec 9, 2011I am working for customer with a simple item with his iLogic design. He has created a simple form to modify his iProperties. To modify the current material, a multi-value parameter was created and the following rule as a local rule;
"MultiValue.List("MATLIST") = iProperties.Materials
iProperties.Material = MATLIST"
He is now trying to make this an external rule but gets the following error
Error in rule: Mat2, in document: Mat2.iLogicVb
iProperties.Material: is probably a bad material name.
The more info tab says:

Nov 6, 2012I have an iassembly which contains around 500 different members. There aren't any major differences between the members other than parts being Included/Excluded and parts being replaced by similar parts (this can all be done in the table as the parts are all created as one ipart family).
I need an assembly drawing for every member. As the drawings will be very similar, it is possible to just create one drawings then use 'Save as' and 'replace model reference' to create the whole lot. As this process would be very tedious and time consuming, I want to create a ilogic program or a VB macro to automate this process.
Basically i need a program that will...
FOR every line in the table (say 1 to 500)...
look at the currently active drawing...
replace model reference (for 2 views and a parts list) with the appropriate member (whos file name will match it's Part Number)...
save as with a file name that matches the current rows Part Number...
END when all of the members are complete.

Apr 18, 2012I want to create a rule that will warn the user when the plate thickness they are using is not standard. I have already created a multivalue parameter for plate thickness, which lists all standard steel plate thickness's and also allows for custom values.
I was hoping I could create a rule that would prompt a dialogue box warning when the user creates a custom value for plate thickness.
I know this can be done, but like I said, Im bloody useless with iLogic and find it hard to come across relevent examples and/or tutorials online.

In iLogic Utilities, there is a button "Rules Triggered by Events", If I use "Any Model Parameter Change", the update need long time, looks like Inventor is "No Response". I like the way "Material Change", but I need "part Number" change to trigger the rules. How can I do it? I tried other events as After Open, Before Save, etc, they are does not work.

Aug 8, 2013We are looking to switch from SW to Autodesk in order to utilize advanced surfacing in Alias, and its interoperability with Inventor. However, we need to continue to perform Kinimatic linkage studies as well using Inventor. I need to make sure we can perform the same calculations with ease before making the switch.
At this point I am trying to mimic in Inventor the kinimatic studies I perform in SW. In SW I would perform these studies within a single part file, using a single sketch only (no solid parts). Within this part file I would break up the total "travel" of the linkage into configurations that are driven by a "Design Table". The Design Table would be used for both the main driving value, and for any driven values I wanted to use for analysis.
I am trying to find a way to get the same driven variables written to an Excel file to use for analysis using Inventor.
As a test example:
I would like to drive one variable(Damper Length) to get ~20 different iParts, each with the linkage moved to a new point within its set range of motion. I then would like to write several Driven variables(Displacement_1-3 shown in "RULE CODE" attachement) from each iPart instance to an Excel file.
I have been able to get my 20 iParts and the linkage to move accordingly(iPART INSTANCES attachement), but I have not figured out how to write the driven data to excel for each iPart instance(20 rows of data, 3 columns). I have only been able to write the dimesions for one row of data...whichever iPart is currently open.
with the necessary iLogic code or another solution? It seems like this should be pretty straight forward. Do I need to be using the "ChangeRow" iPart Snippet?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Driving ILogic Rule Into A Part
Jun 17, 2013I would like to make an External Rule that would make an iLogic Internal Rule (with the same code every time). I guess what I really need is a way to drive an Ilogic rule into every part that does not have the rule in the part already.
I know what you’re thinking and just using the External Rule doesn’t work for what I want to do. I need it to be an iLogic Internal Rule.
