AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Points Automatically Placed Adjacent And Perpendicular To An Alignment?
Aug 20, 2013
I need to place points automatically and in order sequentially along an alignment and I need to generate data from the points relative to an adjacent alignment. SO, two alignments, adjacent but not parrallel to each other. The data would then be point #, sta and offset from the adjacent alignment with the points placed in order and by window or crossing. I have a few thousand to place so one at a time would be an undesireable solution of course.
I have an alignment going up the center of a draw. I'd like to extract cross sections of this alignment and existing ground. What is a good way to do this?
I don't do cross sections very often, so when I need one, I draw a second alignment perpendicular to the first and profile that alignment to give me a bare bones cross section. I'd like to do these cross sections on a given interval, and at every change in direction. How should I go about it?
I am working on drawings where we create dtm's from surfaces, use the dtm for layout, shoot the asbuilt of the final surface, and then compare hundreds of shots to the surface to develop an as-build report.
I want to be able to select a mass of points, compare the perpindicular difference in elevation to the surface, and have an excel spread sheet generated from the results.
My coworkers are able to do this in Terramodel but I am on a mission to eliminate Terramodel from my day to day work.

I have a drawing that suddenly stopped synching one of the alignments (the others synch fine) and the two surfaces that are referenced. They are all data referenced but require me to open the drawing and manually synch the entities each time. This drawings was functioning perfectly until this began just recenlty. I've searched the forums but can't find anything. I'm assuming maybe some system variable is wacky but that doesn't explain why the other alignments sync just fine.
I see that Neilw asked about exporting alignment and profile to the data collector. My problem is this. We use Trimble Links to send data to our data collector and that is fine, but the surveyor cant stake out the points or anything. We can see the info is in the data collector, but how do you set out anything. Is there a setting maybe on the TSC2 that we are overlooking? We have Civil 3D 2012.
This is the second time I’m highlighting this issue. I couldn’t acquire the points of the alignment shown in the curve below
The issue here is that the C3D does take the “starting station” as station point but it doesn’t take the “ending station” as station point and thus doesn’t proceed
What might be the problem here? How to let the C3D take the “ending station” as station point but not as coordinates point? Also it doesn’t accept clicking the end point to take it!!
i need to put points on an alignment at each station. i've figured that part out. what i want is the station label to be the point description. i don't see a way to do this without editing each point which is way too time consuming.

When I create a report from 'Staion offsets to points' to excel, the Station, (what I would call chainage) is coming up as 3+10.00 in the spreadsheet. I need this to be 310.000 so I can apply formulas in excel. How do I change this.
I've changed the alignment label style to show it as this format, and it works fine. I've also gone into 'Edit report settings' and changed alignment station display to ####, decimals to 3 places, yet it keeps giving me the same format with 2 decimals.
Also, in this report, how do I remove the metre symbol 'm' (i.e 1400m) from the offset and elevation display?
I need to create an excel spreadsheet with quite a lot of data, apply formulas, and I really don't want to remove every 'm' and rewrite every chainage.
(Again): Plotting points at stations of horizontal alignment,
I wanted to plot points at the stations of horizontal alignment to be then able to capture their XYZ and thus can be stored on the GPS devise for setting out on the field.
The points are not plotted (see the attached screenshots
I am trying to find a way to offset points along an alignment showing station, offset and description. This is for a plan and profile sheet see attached example clouded in red.
i found a way to get a report of my cogo points relative to an alignment i.e. station offset. problem is, i have thousands of points in my drawing. is there a way to get only a few, or a group of points to show up on the report instead of ALL of them?
I currently set up out civil 3d to do auto linework, which went really smooth. The first issue is with my points. When I go to Import Survey Data to insert the points and do auto linework, it doesn't insert the points in the right location (nothing is .86 off and easting is 1.36 off on every point). But if i were to insert the points by going to Points and clicking Import, they are right on? second, who do I get symbols to automatically come in when I insert the points? (power poles, hydrants, inlets, etc.).
I want to use the 'Create Points at Alignment Geometry' tool in order to label only the PIs. However, when I use the tool it creates two points (one called PI and one called CPI) at each vertex of the alignment. How can I fix this issue and toggle the creation of the various other geometry points?
How would I go about generating labelled points with xyz values at 5m intervals along a road alignment in Civils 3D 2014?
I have had a go with the AddAlign Labels command but could not figure out how to add an elevation value to the label. Also this method seems to require manual input for each label which is not practical as I will have have around 450 points to set out.
I have looked into the Stakeout Alignment Report, but this seems to require a survey database, which I don't have.
I have an alignment label that I normally use to show the PVI's of a profile in the plan view.
This is a little unusual, but in a specific case I wanted to design my profile at one alignment, but show it at another. I designed my swale profile in the pathway profile view and then superimposed the swale profile on the swale profile view. I then went back to the swale alignment to add these labels.
It's a no-go AFAICT. The only profile available for me to select for these labels is the original ground profile from the surface.
I am trying out this option, and am noticing that whenever I close and reopen the drawing with a surface that uses this option, it resets my maximum angle from whatever I have it set to, to 90 degrees. Am I missing some setting that defaults the max angle to 90 degrees on drawing open? Or is something else going on here?
I using a data reference/shortcut to properly label an alignment in paperspace. However when I reference the alignment in and apply the labels the aren't the same as the original alignment that I am referencing. Is there a setting where I am supposed to apply a new beginning station.
Also it seems as though the stationing(distance) isn't even matching up 1:1 with the original drawing. For example in the original base drawing my alignment starts at 10+00 with the next PI at 14+76.98, but the stationing on the reference alignment starts at 0+83.33 with the very same PI being labeled as 1+23.08. So the very same distance is 476.98' in the real design and the drawing it's being referenced in, but the stationing of the referenced alignment shows it as 39.75 Units.
I've attached a screen of the beginning of the alignment.

Using Civil 3d2012, Is it possible to change the alignment label style set after the alignment has been created? For example, for an alignment that was created with alignment label set X - change the label set to alignment label set Y? It seems like this should be pretty easy, I must be missing something obvious.
I have a question on Alignment PI's. (Point of Inflection/Intersection)I have an alignment where some PI's have curves, others are merely hard bends.
Is there a way to automatically label the PI's even if they have an associated curve? (I'd like PI, PC and PT)Alternatively, can I only show markers at PI's without curves?
I’m wondering if there is a way to launch alignment grid view/alignment entities (attached) without the need to first launching “alignment”? This dialogue box is quite essential in editing the values of radius, degree of curvature and deflection angle for the selected curve.
Can I inherit the station from one alignment as the begin station for another alignment?
For example. Alignment 1 is 1000 ft long and starts at sta 0+00.
At sta 8+01, Alignment 2 begins and goes off in another direction.
I manually enter 8+01 for begin station Alignment 2. Life is good. Still in the design stage, and customer needs to modify Alignment 1 to avoid something. Now Alignment 2 intersects Alignment 1 at sta 8+15, but same N/E coordinates.
I manually enter 8+15 for begin station Alignment 2.
It would be better if Alignment 2 could inherit the begin station based on the new stationing from Alignment 1.
1. We all understand that designing highways is not simple and I don't know in your country but in my area almost all the bridges come at an angle from the alignment/corridor. Now, how can you do that in Civil 3D ?
2. Can you insert an entire shape, let's say a culvert into the design / corridor and be able to show it in the 3d view preciselly like it will be in real ? what about showing it in profiles or sections ?
I have a pipe network and a profile for it. Some of the structures have 2 inlet pipes. The pipe system more of less goes down a road, so every now and then there is a cross pipe into a structure. I have masking turned on under the structure style->profile setting. I want to see the cross pipe, so I found on here that all I need to do is under structure style->view direction (profile)->make Structure Pipe Outlines visible. I did that and still no cross pipe shows up. If I turn the masking off it is there.
Any way to raise/lower a surface, but is there a way to offset a surface basically 1m (to make it easy) perpendicular to all grades? Because when you raise/lower a surface, if you have a 3:1 slope, it will raise/lower it vertical 1m or so, but then the perpendicular distance between the 2 surfaces is less then 1m.
