AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Creating A Ditch / Channel
May 11, 2012
I'm trying to create a ditch / channel with a 4 foot wide base and 4:1 side slopes. I was going to create one using a feature line and inserting it to my design surface as a break line. Is there an easier way or better process I can use to create this?

In highway construction, I usually check for lowest ditch elevation and see how the existing drainage flows. Typically one would create or specify in CL profile creation with a 15m offset right and left which would then generate existing CL and 15m offset profiles in profile view. However, the 15m offset profile might not represent the lowest point in the ditch as the lowest elevation offset distance varies along the highway.
My question: Is there a way in civil 3D profile creation where it can automatically trace the lowest elevation in the ditch and plot it in profile view?Â

I had created a corridor using the attached assembly with conditional cut/fill and SlopeToSurface SA, the cut condition provides a ditch SA at cut only. Then had the Ditch Bottom Profile to follow a ditch profile that I created, and flows toward the increasing chainage. The horizontal offset and elevation of the ditch runs perfectly fine as desired, except between Sta. 0+465 (cut section) and Sta. 0+470 (fill section), where the ditch ties back to the edge of shoulder instead of going toward the outside (as shown in the blue lines).
My question is, do I need to make a transition between the cut and fill sections? If so how much effect and details is needed as I have a few other locations with the same issue.Â

I'm trying to add a sump/baffle box to a drainage ditch. I'm taking this project over from someone else. They had created a surface. However, I'm confused about how the surface they made was created, but I have used it to give me a reference to were the sump is located on the profile view. (circled in blue). Currently that surface has wall that are 1.5' high with a bottom at -1.5'. I have drawn in the sump on the profile view (highlighted in yellow).
I have tried to start over by using breaklines. I have already created a standard breakline on the N and W side at 0. However, on the east side, how to create a breakline and keep the drainage basin grading to the exisitng drainage basin grade.
I have attached screen shots of the plan and profile view.Â

I am trying to create a custom subassembly using SAC 2012 that will place a 1' deep ditch at the bottom of the slope in a fill condition. Â The trouble I am having is how to hold a consant 1' depth on the backslope and vary the foreslope since the daylight offset and elevation is variable depending on the slope of the existing ground. Â I need the attachment point to be the edge of the shoulder so it seems like a loop that varies the foreslope length would be required but loops are not allowed. Â I will also have the option to target a profile but I also need the ability to hold a constant ditch depth.
How to model this condition.

I am trying to create an assembly with a U channel (side ditch) that's top will follow the sidewalk it is next to but I need the profile of the U channel to be different than that of the roadway. Is there a way to create a custom subassembly part that will do this? Can I create a different allignment/profile for the bottom of the U channel that can then link to the other assembly?
The only other think I can think of is to use a dynamic block to add the U channel to my cross sections, but that will take a lot of time to do.

I'm using the Ditch subassembly in my corridor and am running into a problem when using realistic mode to view.
I've applied a render material to L3, L2 and L4 which is fine but when I assign a material to L1-L5 (i.e Top) it overdraws (or otherwise fails to display) the previously assigned materials for L2, L3 and L4.
If I set the Links L1-L5 (i.e. Top) to no display then L2, L3 and L4 display as expected but when IMX'd to Infraworks the existing terrain shows through at Links L1 and L5.
Is it possible to stop this from happening and have a seperate material for L1 and L5 whilst retaining L2,L3 & L5 materials?

I'm trying to build the ditch portion of my Subassembly backwards from an offset target "DitchOffset". The elevation of this point should be derived from a point that is using Slope and Delta Y from point "P12" (see attached). Must be at least 1m from the bottom of SubBase with a 5:1 slope.Â
The Ditch Bottom will be variable width. I'd like to be able to select my offset alignment for my ditch bottom. Have a link from this point extend at a slope to the Target Surface to complete the foreslope.
I can't quite picture how to complete the links from the DitchOffset point. This may be complicated but the diagram identify what I'm trying to do.

How to make a Spot Color Channel on Photoshop? I am using this image as an example. The blue color in the background needs to be printed mostly with a spot color that is close to the original painting color (ex: Pantone Blue 072C) . But the CMYK color still should be present in within the blues to resemble the subtle nuances of the brush strokes. I can’t figure it out on my own.
For more samples of painting images, go to
[URL]..........
Â
The reason I am doing this is because the artist’s works were represented on many publications over the years from many different countries. And we found out that CMYK color alone cannot duplicate the blue color very well (I mean the blue only, no problem with other colors). I know, it is hard to believe, but if you see all the publications and compare it to the original art, you would see the huge difference in color saturation and luminosity. That is the reason, I think it is necessary to use a spot blue for an upcoming catalog of the artist.

I'm interested in making a Saturation Mask. Actually I want to extract the Saturation Channel.I know there's HSL / HSB Plug-In made by Adobe which is able to do so.Yet, I'm interested if there's an option creating it using the Blend Modes (Just like adding a Solid Black Layer in Color Mode creates a Luminosity Mask).

I have created a short (<3 seconds) video comprised of 2 layers. Each layer was filmed as a green screen, and I used Keylight in After Effects CC to create a transparent background. My ultimate objective is to use the clip to create a transition for use in ProShow Producer, as described in the link [URL]..... To do this, I need the main video file, and a second file containing only the alpha channel.
Â
I have used Adobe Media Encoder to output a FLV, and told it to Encode Alpha Channel, as was suggested, but I only get the one file (the main video). How do I get the alpha file?
Â
I am using AE CC.

I already have an image file in png format..which I want to use as an application launcher icon for my android application.
The android specifies image with following properties for the launcher icon(Will need 4 different image to support different screen size in mobile devices)
Launcher icons should be 32-bit PNGs with an alpha channel for transparency. The finished launcher icon dimensions corresponding to a given generalized
Screen density are shown in the table below.
1. 36 * 36 px
2. 48 * 48 px
3. 72 * 72 px
4. 96 * 96 px
I would like to create 4 png files(with specifications mentioned above) from the already existing image file. How do I do that in GIMP.
I am completely novice to image editing(Never touched any image editing software before) and not sure how to achieve this in GIMP.

how one might model an existing drainage channel.
Here’s the scenario – field crews are going to collect data for a 500 ft long concrete (trapezoidal) drainage channel. The bottom width varies from 7 ft to 19 ft wide with vertical walls varying from 4 ft to 7’ high. The channel will be filled and capped.
I considered using one of the channel subassemblies with Civil 3d and establish targets along the existing channel top and bottom of walls. However, I don’t see that the stock subassemblies are intended for this and don’t really lend themselves to perform this. I suppose the other option is to use linkwidthandslope subassemblies and use multiple targets for inside bottoms, inside tops and outside tops of walls.

I was recently trying to find the normal depth in a natural channel to use as an outfall water surface elevation in SSA. I double checked the normal depth calculations using the Express Add-On in Civil 3D. I found that while the normal depths correlated closely for channels with a single roughness coefficient, they varied considerably if a composite roughness coefficient was used for the left and right overbanks. This leads me to believe that composite roughnesses are being calculated incorrectly in SSA. I would like to use SSA for floodplain analysis, but am unwilling to do so until I have confidence in the calculations.

I am a screen printer and I print my separations from Photoshop. I routinely work with multi channel files or RGB files with additional spot color channels. I have created actions to place my registration marks, re-size images, etc to get ready to print but I manually have to create the text labels for each screen if they are missing from the original artwork.
The files I work with have channels named as "Base White, Red, Green, 284 Blue" etc indicating the ink color. What i would like to be able to do is click an action that would copy the text from the channel name and insert it into a separate or each/all channels near the top of the file so that when I print each positive it has a corresponding label for ink color.
I am not sure if this is even possible, and I am limited on my knowledge when it comes to actions and have pretty much got lucky in the past getting them to do what I want without unnecessary steps.
On my registration target action it creates a new channel with each individual reg mark then combines them into one separate channel in which I just copy the contents and select all the ink channels and fill with black to make them appear, i'm happy with the steps it takes as it isn't too much trouble and if this could do the same with labels I would be happy with that.

I'm trying to create a feature line to use as a breaklline for the bottom of a ditch. I click on the first contour, elev.678, accept the elevation, click the next contour, select T for transition, then accept the elevation, 677. I would like to end up with a feature line having a first node elev. 678, end node elev. 677, slope -4% (contours are 25' apart). Instead, The first node is 678, slopes @ -1.33% to an inserted node, elev. 677.1, then slopes at -21.88% to end node elev. 677. What am I doing wrong? I don't see a lot of options here when creating (drawing) a feature line. Should I be using something else to accomplish this task?

I switched from Photoshop to Fireworks back in 1999 - because of its mix of Vector & Raster editing, slice/export and GIF animation capabilities. But... my command of Photoshop and Illustrator has suffered. I feel there's so much I could do with those tools not only for for print, but also for websites. I tried going back to Photoshop a few times over the years but just couldn't manage its drawing tools - maddening!---------------------However, I'm now seriously considering switching if PS does what I need... and more. PS pros Most web design job ads specify PS and AI not FWsI need to be adept with PS and AI for print etc. I'm fossilizing!Assets and Artwork are often PS and AI files, it'd be good to share files with others in the company without probsIt'd be good to use the same app and sometimes the same files for web and printRaster Image editing is more advancedMore 'painterly' in its capabilities.Feels like I need to move on and upskill as a designer PS cons Can I draw in PS as easily as FWs? - or will I need to awkwardly integrate Illustrator into the workflow? Is it as easy to make animated gifs? (perhaps I should do it in Flash)Learning curve So here it is: Why should I make the switch to Photoshop?

In the Surfaces Tutorials: Exercise 1: "Creating a TIN Surface". The first instruction is to click "NEW", which I did. I selected "Surfaces.dwt per instructions and clicked open. I have executed these steps a number of times to be sure I am doing what the instructions say. But, every time the same thing happens. "Drawing2.dwg" opens instead of "Surfaces.dwt". I also make sure the file type is set to dwt.

I was curious what the basic workflow is for creating an EG from a survey. Â The catch is that we don't have a point file or elevated points on the drawing. Â The drawing is just that a drawing with spot elevations and linework. Â The lot is 100' long and 30' wide. Â An existing house takes up most of the lot with a street on the front and back. Â The idea is to try making a grading plan after I figure this first part out. Â Where would I begin with something like this to figure out the next step of grading a small lot?
