Photoshop :: Slow Brushes
Jan 4, 2008
I downloaded just a couple brush packs last night to my photoshop CS3 10. However, in the brush list, it is very slow scrolling up or down and requires the hard drive to work. Is there any way I can prevent this from happening? any files to add or delete? thanks a lot!

Whenever I try to use a brush, the program slows down to a crawl. For instance: I open a 600 x 450 JPG and load a size 175 brush. Everything is fine until I increase the brush size. 175 - 900 is OK, but then the brush tip starts to lag like all hell. Reducing the brush size doesn't help. Apparently the problem also depends on the image size. When I load the same brush and a 1440 x 900 JPG, the lagging kicks in earlier. I tried changing the performance settings, but to no avail.
I'm using CS4 11.01 and Windows XP SP3.

I'm a user of CS5, on a MacPro.

I was so disappointed with the amazing slow response when trying to use the Mixer Brushes; fine when using small files, suitable for web, but when working with larger files intended for large printing, it was painful!! Have the people at Adobe sorted the problem out with CS6?Â

i've two problems with Gimp 280
-first, the new brushes flow slower than before- already at 3000-1700 pixels, 300 dpi. Which are modest measures when you paint seriously. I've some delay pulling a sign with most of my brushes. (Btw, i checked with care my brush dynamics). Some hints of what I should set to get a faster/natural flow ?
-second, the zoom wheel of my wacom tablet is broken with the update to xQuartz 271. 'Never had this problem before-damn, zooming ist important. I worked out some workaround using modifier keys (on the tablet), but its never ever so precise as with the wheel.
specs: XQuartz 271, Gimp 281, Wacom driver 526-3, Mac Os 106-6

I am interested in grouping and sorting brushes according to size, shape, whatever.
Right now when I add a brush library, they just stack on top of one another.
For example let's say I have a round brush with a 10 diameter, then next to it a round brush with a 20 diameter. If I make a 15, it goes to the bottom of the list, and I have to scroll all around. How can I group them?
I suspect I would have to make my own brush library with my brushes how I want them, then save that and load it?

How do you rearrange the brushes in the brushes box?
I've seen they are arranged by name, so how do you rename the brushes since renaming the file name don't rename the brush.

I have over 200 brushes for Photoshop CS3 and I use a 42" computer monitor. When I go to my brushes I'm only able to see the brushes up to the letter S and the rest are off screen. Is there a way to get them to display without the obvious way of deleting some of them?

I can see brushes in Preset Viewer that Photoshop cant see. Preset Viewer is set to limit itself to .abr files, which of course is all that Photoshop sees when youre loading brushes, so . . . why can I see some .abr files in Preset Viewer that I cant load in Photoshop CS4 for Windows?

I have been using version 5 for years now and I’ve been looking into getting CS but the biggest thing that I’ve noticed is the brush control. I’ve been used to just selecting the opacity (like 10%) and using my stylist and going over the area and getting darker much like a traditional airbrush. I have played around with the flow and opacity but can’t get the look and the feel of v5. I don’t have all the time in the world to play around with it because it’s my friends computer, I just want to know if it can be done or if they have fazed that out with the newer versions.

I've seen so many people talking about brushes... can someone actually tell me what they do and show me what can be done with them? I have a fair knowledge about photoshop and I just want to advance my skills by finding out what other sort of stuff you can do with photoshop..

I lost my precise preferences for the brushes and all I have is a 1-3 pixel brush. After that it defaults to the icon. Our IT guys seem to have misplaced the original cd.
I've gone through the reloading of brushes, preferences and I've tried Adobe Studio exchange, but no luck. I desperately need be able to get the precise brush size preferences back.

How can I do this? I have a bunch of very nice brushes, with perfect settings that I would like to copy to my thumbdrive so I can use them anywhere I go. Where is the file that has my brushes? I thought it was in the Photoshop/presets/Brushes folder, but none of the .abr files there appear to have my brushes in them.

I miss 2 Brushes in PS 8:
1. A "wet brush" (PS7). it gave a look like painting with slime.
2. A brush that gets Thinner in the end of a stroke. Like the stroke of a pen / feather. Or does anyone know how to get this effect, maybe with another technique.
Did they cancel those strokes or am I to blind to find them?

Im working with Photoshop CS2 and although I have all the brushes that Ive downloaded put into the right folder (program files/adobe/adobe photoshop CS3/presets/brushes) it refuses to see them within the program.
When I installed them photoshop was closed, I even rebooted the computer just in case. I tried moving them into the "adobe photoshop only" folder within the "brushes" folder and it doesn't work.
I know these are more recent brushes so they cant be too out of date for this version.

I am getting lots of problems with CS4, some of which have been covered in separate topics on this forum. In the main, it seems to me that there is a real problem with CS4 processing relatively small amounts of data. The difficulties I am experiencing are:
1. Text tool very slow. Just typing a few letters sees my CPU usage shoot to 50%. There is a lag of about a second between typing the letters and their appearance on the screen.
2. Pen tool very slow with significant lag when using the mouse and CPU again shoots to 50%, even for a short line. If I use the tablet (Trust) it sometimes works, but suffers the same lag as the mouse when it does. Most of the time, though, I just get a faint straight line between the start and end point. This morning I got the same straight line symptom on the mouse!
3. Screen redraw can be painfully slow and blocky, but this fault is really sporadic
4. There is no apparent difference whether I have GPU active or not. However, I have just had a strange message. When GPU was disabled I restarted CS4 and got the message that there was a problem with the display driver, and PS was therefore disabling GPU enhancements! After that, the pen worked fine, and the mouse too, but then the mouse started losing curves.
I experience none of these problems when I run CS.
My video card driver is up to date. The trust tablet driver is the latest, but I really do not think this is the issue, as the drawing problem also affects the mouse.

I run Intel core 2 Quad 2.4 o.c to 3.3, 8GB 1066DDR2 RAM, 512MG NVidia 8800GT, 150GB 10,000RPM WD HDD Windows Vista Ultimate x64. My worst inversion was this pice of crap photoshop CS4. I used to open up to 400 10.3MegaPixel photos with CS2. CS4 drags down just with 100. Won't let me open more than 200. Too bad, come on desingers. I challenge to run my PC against yours. I've tried to configure CS4 to work the way I need it but unfortunatelly I have to wait until "ADOBE" software engineers come up with a new version so I can spend more money on their so famously pirated software to fix the bugs they sold on the previous version. Close to imposible to work with two screens working with different resolution. Photoshop stops functioning everytime an image changes from the main monitor to a secondary monitor. The old friendly Photoshop CS2 allows me to bring anything accross either screen with a continous display of the image. I used to be a Photoshop fan unfortunatelly CS4 lowered my espectations down to about 5%. Might be looking forward to try the competition for a much lower price.Â

When I goto Layer Style>Bevel&Emboss or any other layer style, it takes a LONG time for the layer styles window to come up. Like a minute and a half. I'm just wondering how I can fix this? It never used to do it when I first installed photoshop.

I'm running an older system (WinXP 32-bit, 4 gigs of DDR2 RAM (733 mhz), lots of hard drive space (more than 1TB), 1-gig video card (ATI Radeon 4xxx series), 3GHZ intel dual-core processor, Photoshop CS5
Â
I do a lot of painting, and some of the brushes I have are a lot slower than others. Example- some brushes produce almost no lag, while others produce severe lag. (The slower brushes tend to have a lot of settings in the brush panel such as texture, scattering, dual brush, etc)
Â
I'm planning to upgrade my system soon - I'm considering 8 gigs of DDR3 Ram (2400mhz), a 3.4GHZ i5 quad-core processor, an upgraded ASUS motherboard, and probably stick with the remaining hardware for now. I'll eventually move on to 16GB of RAM. I will also be using a 64-bit version of XP and maybe even go up to Windows 7 64-bit (If I can set aside the time for all the headaches that come with something new like this)
Â
My question is, with an improved system like this, would I expect to see the lag drop significantly on these slow brushes? Or is it just the brush itself which is slow and an improved system will have no impact? I do very little in the way of filters, 95% of my workflow is pure painting with a variety of brushes and not too many layers for the most part (usually less than 50 and closer to 10 on average). So my main concern is trying to remove the slowdown when painting.

I have photoshop 5.5 and it works totally fine with my bosto kingtee tablet. I recently tried downloading the CC trial to test it out and I can click buttons in photoshop with the pen just fine, I can draw with the mouse just fine, but it doesn't put a mark on the canvas with my pen. I then grabbed a cs6 trial, same deal. Seems only 5.5 is working for me. I've reset the brush settings and preferences, I reinstalled my pen drivers.
