Photoshop :: Filter Extract On Hair

Jan 30, 2005

I am using the Filter Extract method to clear cut or background erase around some pics of ladies hair. I understand this is the best tool for this task.

I have studued the Photoshop Help and a couple of tutorials on this subject, and have achieved a couple of passable clear cuts. But as awlasy there si room for improvement.

I am trying to assemble some notes on the best settings etc to use and thought someone out there might be able to contribute.

I have found it a good concept to do the models hair with the Filter Extract option and then to use the Magic Lasso for the rest of her body. Do you agree ?

When in the Filter Extract mode is it best to zoom in on the models face to work on her hair ? Or do you work at actual size ?

Most tutorials say to use a wide brush over the hair edges. Is the idea to move the brush exactly along the hair edges or do you move it along across the edge of the hair and the background ? Is it best to set the width of the brush so that it can cover the width of all of the wispy bits of hair in one pass, or can you just go over them with the filter extract brush?

Photoshop :: Extract Filter Missing From Filter

Jul 18, 2009

I have Photoshop CS4 running on a 8 gig Vista 64 bit system. When I click on Filters, there is no Extract Filter. I did a search prior to posting and saw some threads talking about not moving files, icons etc from their original folder. I am un sure if anything has been moved. However, when I click on Filters, they all seem to be there (at least not greyed out), EXCEPT for the Extract filter. Any help would be apprecited and if you let me know where the filters should reside I can make sure they are in the correct location.

Photoshop :: Extract Filter Vs Refine Edge CS5

Feb 21, 2012

I hear a lot of people talking blithely about how superior Refine Edge is to the previous Extract Filter.

If you look at the two sample files called "Auto Align 1" and "Auto Align 2" in the tutorials folder a couple of versions back you'll find 2 children with sharp outlines against the background and frothy hair around the girl. How refine edge can - in 1 fell swoop - eliminate the clearly defined background around the shoulders AND leave the frothiness of the girls' hair? Until then I stand resolute that REFINE EDGE is NOT a substitute for the EXTRACT FILTER at all!

Photoshop :: Hair Color (Black Hair To White)

Aug 12, 2007

trying every layer mask combo I could think of to create a realistic shade of white hair that doesn't look like I just used the brush tool to make it.

I've tried lighting up the shadows with the curves option then using the selective color option. But all that does is make a very fake looking film to put over the eyebrows (ya it's eyebrows I'm working on, I'm trying to get them to match a white wig the subject is wearing.)

I've also tried using the solid color option, and a color overlay and that just came out weird.

Has anyone ever turned pitch black hair to white and had it still look like hair?

Photoshop :: Lens Flare Filter - Artifacts Ruin Effect - Useless Filter?

Aug 25, 2013

I tried to use the lens flare filter in Photoshop CS6.While the lighting effect is interesting, it introduces ugly artifacts like blue or orange blobs (which are supposed to be the reflection of the diaphragm, but do not look anywhere close to that, but instead are just cheesy looking blobs of color).

In the "movie prime" setting blue lines are added which have nothing to do with lens flar.On top of it, the preview is about the size of a stamp. Any way to use the filter without getting these artifacts, or is it - what I assume - just a useless toy filter, that has probably been dragged on for years and years because it's always been there? What do you use to create a lens flare effect? Are you just building it from scratch with brush work?

Photoshop :: Filter Gallery - Halftone Filter Unpredictable

Nov 9, 2013

I've deleted my PS preferences and restarted, and I cannot get this filter to do what is was just doing a day earlier. It doesn't matter what the foreground/background colors are, nor does it matter what the resolution of the file is.  I've experimented with every variable. The filter effect changes the filled layer to a solid color of the current foreground color.  No lines, dots or circles at all.

I'm trying to make lines in a filled layer, or a rasterized text layer.Adjusting the sliders has no effect at this point, but the other Gallery filters DO work, oddly enough.

I've used this filter effect many times over the years, and it just started acting wonky.  This is PS CS6, on Mac OSX 10.8.5.It seems to be unpredictable or temperamental.  Is there a reasonably-priced plugin that will create lines that are completely adjustable?

Photoshop :: Hair?

I got a picture of a lady, however, because of the lighting and the fact that it's b/w some parts of the hair are so dark that you can't see the hair at all.

Is there any techniques I can use so that I can make it look like the hair is slightly visible (even though that area is currently a solid black).

I just made a logo brush, and can't see the brush until I actually stamp it on my picture. I've looked around trying to see if there is a "box not checked" somewhere that would allow me to see the brush size before I start using it, no luck.
