Photoshop :: CS6 - Layer Clipping Mask

May 3, 2013

In CS6, the clipping mask is just an icon in the lower right of the layer icon in the palette. How do I easily drag it to another layer to create the same clipping mask? In previous Photoshops, you could option drag it to other layers/folder to quickly add the masks.

Photoshop :: What Is The Difference Between A Layer Mask And Clipping Mask?

Apr 26, 2009

My subject line pretty much sums up what I want to ask.

The thing is I've learned how to do both of them, but every textbook exercise I've done regarding one I found out that I can pull off with the other too.

Are they simply two different mechanisms for doing the same thing?

Illustrator :: Clipping Mask On A Layer Is The Entire Document Covered In A Mask?

Jan 27, 2013

Level: Newbie   OS: Win7 64bit   Ia: Cs6

Once I use a Clipping Mask on a layer is the entire document covered in a mask?

And/or is all the artwork from then on inside the mask?

I've read about how to add and how to remove art from a mask. I've read about how to make and release and lots of other things.

So, then I went and found a lesson that contained the use of a Clipping Mask.

I am suppose to Select the main shape and "just" copy it and move it down (doesn't say rather to Paste in front or back but I assumed in back ~ not that it has mattered thus far)

However, while making the main shape I used Gradient Mesh and used an Offset to create a "replica" and so when I go to Select the main shape the mesh is selected and so when I Paste (in back ~ seems most logical) and then move it down the details such as the colors of the Gradient and other such things are visible in front ~ ??

So, I have been trying to abate my problem in lots of different ways.

I have tried using the Pen tool to draw behind the main shape, I've tried making a New Layer and placing it above and below and inbetween the main shape layer, I've tried adding the artwork to the Mask ... I've tried everything I can think of and I've been through many an article in the manual and FAQ's to no avail.

I suppose, what I think I need to know ... is, how ... how on earth do I draw behind this main shape? Am I not able to do it because I am not getting behind the Mask?

Photoshop :: Creating Base Layer For Clipping Mask

May 9, 2011

I am struggling with clipping masks and after a few hours of scouring the internet and trying different techniques, I am left no closer to my end result than from when I started.

I am creating a banner. The banner contains 1 background image and some text. I'd also like to include 9 photos on top of the background image, all bound by a textured border. I have created the borders for all 9 images and have placed them on the background. Now, my questions is how I make these base layers of a clipping mask. I want the the mask to show the image, even through some of the textured border.

I know how to create the actual clipping mask of the image to be placed in the border. My question lies entirely within the base layer/border layer.

Illustrator :: Make Clipping Mask Whilst Preserving Sub Layer Structure?

Sep 18, 2013

I am editing a map and need my map split into multiple rectangular segments. My map is made up of many layers and sub layers which I need to preserve. When I clipping mask the map with a rectangle all of the map's subs layers merge into one layer. How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure? It seems like a 'layer mask' is the correct tool but doesn't seem like CS6 has it?

Photoshop :: Clipping Mask?

Feb 3, 2005

what a clipping mask is, since a layer mask seems to do the same thing.

A layer mask uses a mapped grayscale image transposed onto the current layer's document in order to determine each pixels transparency level accordingly.

But to me, a clipping mask is the same thing when you ALT+CLICK between 2 layers, and the layer below which is not indented uses it's content (and it's transparency) to determine what the (now indented) layer above's contents can be "seen".

So I put all the layers in a group..and then click the little white cirkel in a grey rectangle at the bottom right? And then what? If I alt click that white square that appears next to my group layer.. I can edit it.. should I put my clipping shape there? cause that still doesnt clip anything and I cant adjust the fill either..

Photoshop :: Can't Stroke Object After Clipping Mask / CS6

Jul 22, 2012

OS: Windows 7 64 bit  Ps: CS6

Create a New Layer and place it above the "main object" layer (which has a Clipping Mask) and also apply the Clipping Mask Then I am to Ctrl + Click the main object to Select it and then Right Click to choose Stroke from the menu.

However, when I right click the New Layer with the Clipping Mask the Stroke option is not available ~ nor is it when I click on the object itself on the canvas.

So, I went to Edit > Stroke and tried to apply the Stroke that way but the Stroke is not visible.

I also tried going to Blending Options to apply the Stroke but it's not visible this way either.

Photoshop :: Clipping Mask Shortcut Not Working?

Nov 16, 2013

So i'm trying to get the clipping mask shortcut working for Photoshop CC on OS X 10.9, when I try to use the shortcut, nothing happens. I even tried deleting the shortcut and remaking it, but when I remake it, it doesn't recognize I'm pressing Command Option G, even though I can press these keys in the System Keyboard Shortcuts and it works, for some reason Photoshop is ignoring me pressing Command and Option at the same time?

Also sometimes when I press Command Option Z to undo it just ignores it as well, I have to manually undo the change using my mouse, then it works again.

Photoshop :: Fx Clipping Mask From Selection Not Working

Oct 17, 2012

I'm new to the CS6 interface. In the past this was my process to make add a gradient overlay adjustment to a portion of a layer:

1. Make a selection on a layer
2. Go to the Layers Panel > Select 'fx' menu
3. Choose 'Gradient Overlay' and go from there

Result: a Gradient Overlay adjustment layer with a clipping mask applied to the layer below.

Now in CS6 when I follow this process, it does not automatically create a clipping mask from my selection and make a new adjustment layer with the clipping mask. Instead, it applies the Gradient Overlay to the entire layer. It does this for any option in the 'fx' menu in the Layers Panel. It behaves the same as it did before with any of the options in the Adjustment Layer, however.

Photoshop :: Convert / Copy Clipping Mask

Oct 21, 2011

I was wondering if it is possible to convert/copy a clipping mask to a layer mask.

The reason is, that I have a textured layer, and a highlight layer. By selecting the highlight layer and creating a clipping mask, I get the effect I want.

But... I want to save the highlight layer on its own (as a PNG), in it's clipping mask state, but without the background textured layer.

If I copy the highlight layer and paste it into a new document, it looses the clipping mask. Same if I hide the texture layer.

Photoshop :: Force Clipping Mask To INCLUDE Stroke

Mar 26, 2012

I have a text layer I wish to use as a clipping mask, for an image above.  But the text layer also has a stroke around the outside of the text, to thicken it a bit.  I want the stroked part to be included as part of the mask, i.e. for the image above to be projected onto both the text body AND the stroke around it.  However, it seems that the stroke is ignored, and only the basic text shape used as the mask.

How do I achieve an effect whereby the image above is projected also onto the stroke?

I have a similar problem with a shape layer I have.  It is a rounded rectangle shape, but I am only using the shape to act as a path around which I stroke to create a 20px frame.  I want the frame (only the frame) to be used as a clipping mask, so that an image is projected only onto that frame, and NOT inside or outside the frame -- only on the frame.  I can set the "fill" to 0% to create a transparent interior, so that all I have is a frame, and transparency inside and out (which I would then hope is a great clipping mask to use for my purpose), but I guess photoshop views this as being entirely transparent (i.e. effectively no mask at all) because it ignores the stroke part completely.
