View 5 Replies View RelatedIm making a logo for a client and am having a nightmare of a time trying to properly use the clipping masks in illustrator CS5. I copied and pasted the logo I made behind itself with a different color just for a drop shadow-like effect. And now I'm trying to apply this diagonal line pattern I created over top the "shadow" I made to give it some texture.
Here's an example of what I'm going for, only imagine the line pattern on the text instead of banner.
My subject line pretty much sums up what I want to ask.
The thing is I've learned how to do both of them, but every textbook exercise I've done regarding one I found out that I can pull off with the other too.
Are they simply two different mechanisms for doing the same thing?

Once I use a Clipping Mask on a layer is the entire document covered in a mask?
And/or is all the artwork from then on inside the mask?
I've read about how to add and how to remove art from a mask. I've read about how to make and release and lots of other things.
So, then I went and found a lesson that contained the use of a Clipping Mask.
I am suppose to Select the main shape and "just" copy it and move it down (doesn't say rather to Paste in front or back but I assumed in back ~ not that it has mattered thus far)
However, while making the main shape I used Gradient Mesh and used an Offset to create a "replica" and so when I go to Select the main shape the mesh is selected and so when I Paste (in back ~ seems most logical) and then move it down the details such as the colors of the Gradient and other such things are visible in front ~ ??
So, I have been trying to abate my problem in lots of different ways.
I have tried using the Pen tool to draw behind the main shape, I've tried making a New Layer and placing it above and below and inbetween the main shape layer, I've tried adding the artwork to the Mask ... I've tried everything I can think of and I've been through many an article in the manual and FAQ's to no avail.
I suppose, what I think I need to know ... is, how ... how on earth do I draw behind this main shape? Am I not able to do it because I am not getting behind the Mask?
I have noticed in Photoshop CS5.1 and CS6 strange behaviour when saving for web file as PNG-24.
case1.I have one layer photo 260x360.Create Marquee square 200x200 and layer mask hide selection (effect: transparent square hole inside)save for web as PNG-24 (transparency on)-> file size 131.4k
case2.I have one layer photo 260x360.Create Marquee square 200x200 and delete pixels (effect: transparent square hole inside)save for web as PNG-24 (transparency on)-> file size 66.93k
Both pictures got same square transparent hole, but sizes are so different. Using mask do not reduce size of the file PNG24. Why is like that, bug ?
I do not have the ability to create a clipping mask in cs5. It doesn't matter if I use the short cut or the long way. In fact, when I go the long way it is in grey print, not black...so it is not even an option.

View 1 Replies View Relatedwhat a clipping mask is, since a layer mask seems to do the same thing.
A layer mask uses a mapped grayscale image transposed onto the current layer's document in order to determine each pixels transparency level accordingly.
But to me, a clipping mask is the same thing when you ALT+CLICK between 2 layers, and the layer below which is not indented uses it's content (and it's transparency) to determine what the (now indented) layer above's contents can be "seen".
I've an image and typed the words . Do I create the clipping mask or something else ? I would see the the words inside the image. Will I use the clipping mask to get them togherher?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot get the clipping mask to work. I have tried Ctrl + G and have gone the long route and it will not blend in at all. I am trying to teach myself and have searched and searched but cannot find an answer. I have also checked to make sure I am on the correct layer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIn CS6, the clipping mask is just an icon in the lower right of the layer icon in the palette. How do I easily drag it to another layer to create the same clipping mask? In previous Photoshops, you could option drag it to other layers/folder to quickly add the masks.

What is the point of imposing this restriction, and how do you get around it?
I am running Photoshop CS4 and whenver I try to make an adjustment layer only affect the layer below it by creatnig a clipping mask, it just disables the Adjustment layer. What I mean by this is that its just as if I hid the adjustment layer, so it doesn't affect anything. I've tried everything in the Solutions to Common Problems thread.
View 7 Replies View RelatedBasically I have a background layer and group with 5 layers inside. I want to set an adjustment as a clipping mask to affect the whole group but I don't want it to affect the background layer. Is there a way to create a clipping mask for a group, so that just the layer within this group are affected and not the background layer?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm trying to clip a bunch of layers, based on a shape with no fill, just the path basically...
So I think I need to group the layers and mask the group right?
So I put all the layers in a group..and then click the little white cirkel in a grey rectangle at the bottom right? And then what? If I alt click that white square that appears next to my group layer.. I can edit it.. should I put my clipping shape there? cause that still doesnt clip anything and I cant adjust the fill either..
Still trying to set up revit standards can't come to conclusion regarding plotting vector or raster. My personal (limited) experience raster plotting has been poor quality with vector the plots are cleaner and it seems I have better control of shaded areas.

Create a New Layer and place it above the "main object" layer (which has a Clipping Mask) and also apply the Clipping Mask Then I am to Ctrl + Click the main object to Select it and then Right Click to choose Stroke from the menu.
However, when I right click the New Layer with the Clipping Mask the Stroke option is not available ~ nor is it when I click on the object itself on the canvas.
So, I went to Edit > Stroke and tried to apply the Stroke that way but the Stroke is not visible.
I also tried going to Blending Options to apply the Stroke but it's not visible this way either.

View 11 Replies View RelatedSo i'm trying to get the clipping mask shortcut working for Photoshop CC on OS X 10.9, when I try to use the shortcut, nothing happens. I even tried deleting the shortcut and remaking it, but when I remake it, it doesn't recognize I'm pressing Command Option G, even though I can press these keys in the System Keyboard Shortcuts and it works, for some reason Photoshop is ignoring me pressing Command and Option at the same time?
Also sometimes when I press Command Option Z to undo it just ignores it as well, I have to manually undo the change using my mouse, then it works again.
I'm new to the CS6 interface. In the past this was my process to make add a gradient overlay adjustment to a portion of a layer:
1. Make a selection on a layer
2. Go to the Layers Panel > Select 'fx' menu
3. Choose 'Gradient Overlay' and go from there
Result: a Gradient Overlay adjustment layer with a clipping mask applied to the layer below.
Now in CS6 when I follow this process, it does not automatically create a clipping mask from my selection and make a new adjustment layer with the clipping mask. Instead, it applies the Gradient Overlay to the entire layer. It does this for any option in the 'fx' menu in the Layers Panel. It behaves the same as it did before with any of the options in the Adjustment Layer, however.
I was wondering if it is possible to convert/copy a clipping mask to a layer mask.
The reason is, that I have a textured layer, and a highlight layer. By selecting the highlight layer and creating a clipping mask, I get the effect I want.
But... I want to save the highlight layer on its own (as a PNG), in it's clipping mask state, but without the background textured layer.
If I copy the highlight layer and paste it into a new document, it looses the clipping mask. Same if I hide the texture layer.
way to create a clipping mask for a group (folder)?
It seems I can only create them for single layers, but not for a whole grouped bunch of layers...
I have two layers. The lower layer is text. The upper layer is a pattern. I want to show the pattern on the text only, but do not want to show any of the text color (pattern is black, so is text). How can I accomlish this?
Currently I tried to apply the text layer as a clipping mask for the pattern layer but the text color shows through.
I'll try keep this short. Got a picture, created clipping mask to delete backround. Saved the image to print. Need to save the actual outline of the image to send to a cutter so that once I have printed the image, the cutter will cut it out of the paper (it only recognizes vectors). Does anyone know how to accomplish this. How do you save the outline only? I don't even know if this can be done....

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a text layer I wish to use as a clipping mask, for an image above. But the text layer also has a stroke around the outside of the text, to thicken it a bit. I want the stroked part to be included as part of the mask, i.e. for the image above to be projected onto both the text body AND the stroke around it. However, it seems that the stroke is ignored, and only the basic text shape used as the mask.
How do I achieve an effect whereby the image above is projected also onto the stroke?
I have a similar problem with a shape layer I have. It is a rounded rectangle shape, but I am only using the shape to act as a path around which I stroke to create a 20px frame. I want the frame (only the frame) to be used as a clipping mask, so that an image is projected only onto that frame, and NOT inside or outside the frame -- only on the frame. I can set the "fill" to 0% to create a transparent interior, so that all I have is a frame, and transparency inside and out (which I would then hope is a great clipping mask to use for my purpose), but I guess photoshop views this as being entirely transparent (i.e. effectively no mask at all) because it ignores the stroke part completely.
I have 2 monitors. I’m currently working on the file on monitor 2. Having the layer panel on monitor 1, I'm trying to create a clipping mask by holding down the option button on monitor 1's layer panel.
It will jump to the file on monitor 1 and stays on that monitor unless I move the layer panel to monitor 2. Every other function seems to work fine so far, but this one really bothers me a lot.
I am struggling with clipping masks and after a few hours of scouring the internet and trying different techniques, I am left no closer to my end result than from when I started.
I am creating a banner. The banner contains 1 background image and some text. I'd also like to include 9 photos on top of the background image, all bound by a textured border. I have created the borders for all 9 images and have placed them on the background. Now, my questions is how I make these base layers of a clipping mask. I want the the mask to show the image, even through some of the textured border.
I know how to create the actual clipping mask of the image to be placed in the border. My question lies entirely within the base layer/border layer.
I wanted to find a tutorial on how to paste images into frames with various corner radius. You may have a rectangle frame with a curved radius such as 20-50 pixels. I tried pasting images into shapes, but moving the images inside the frames didn't produce the results I was expecting and was cutting off the image inside or blocking out the frame itself.
