Photoshop :: CS5.5 / Can't Edit A File Because It Is A Smart Object
Apr 3, 2012
I have an image I copied straight out of a Powerpoint and into a new CS5.5 file. I select the white background and try to delete it, though I am told that I cant because the Smart Object is not directly editable. How do I set this file up so I can edit and delete the background?
I was told to double click the layers window and a new editable window would pop up...but only the FX window pops up. I've also tried the "edit Content" choice but that erases the smart object..
I'm running Photoshop CS6 (13.0.1) 64bit on a MacBook Pro running OS X Lion. About 60% of the time when I try to double click a vector smart object instead of opening it up in Illustrator I get an error that says, "Could not edit original smart object because of program error." This most recent time it was a smart object from vector data I copied and pasted from Illustrator into Photoshop.
I'd like to import an existing psd file into another psd file as a smart object, so when I change the imported file it is automatically updated in the other file.
I often make a photo into a Smart Object within my file and then resize my file smaller for web. That way I can keep a copy of my original photo at full size but apply color correction, sharpening etc at the web size. Â So lets say the image dimensions are 300px wide but that file holds a smart object that is much larger. Is there an easy way to return the file to the larger size without losing my color adjustment layers etc? Â I know I can just make it larger but I want to return to the exact size of the smart object without having to open said smart object, record the size and then go back and enter it.
I imported some Images (no background) which had the file format 'png'. I just dragged and dropped the files into my current photoshop window. They got imported and then automtically converted into smart objects. After that I created a lot of copies of these smart object and transformed them.  Now I wanted to change one of the smart objects and double clicked on it. But unfortunately the opened file is a png. So it's not possible to save layers in this smart obejct  Is there any way to change the file format of a smart obejct (like psb/psd)?
When I open a raw file it automatically converts to a smart object. After processing and merging I am unable to print anything other than the original object. What might I be doing wrong?
I'm trying to import an illustrator file which has a spot color into photoshop as a smart object. The spot color converts to four color when imported.Â
1. Is there a way for masking each smart filter separately on a single smart object other than nesting one smart object into the another? 2. Is there a way for removing the previously created smart object?
I mean ... let's say I have a smart object containing four layers. Can I remove smart object from these layers?
I'm running photoshop cs3. I created two different smart objects. Within each of those smart objects, I want to include another smart object. However, when I update the embedded smart object, only the partent SO is updated, the other SO seems to have a different child. here is the setup visually: canvas -> SO1 -> SO3canvas -> SO2 -> SO3 so when I update SO3 from within SO1, only SO1 is updated - SO2 stays the same.
Ps CS6 OSX 10.6.8  Problem: Transform applied to Smart Object fails to transform an attached Smart Filters Mask.  I mean a Transform, including Free Transform, as found in the Edit menu. A simple move by the Move Tool is OK.  A workaround until this bug is squashed is to encapsulate the Smart Object + Smart Filters + Filter Mask inside another Smart Object and transform that. However, that will not be a satisfactory solution in some cases. If a filter has size parameter(s), e.g. Gaussian Blur radius, a scaling or warping/distorting transform applied after the filter will obviously differ from the filter applied after the transform.  In any case, the workaround is inconvenient to subsequent editing and experimenting with filters and masks.
I render 3d object from raster and smart object (extrusion) Each time i do the edge where the extrusion meets the front inflation material is slightly distorted. Should be a smooth line.
When I try to edit smart objects via right-click>>edit contents (or double-click on the smart oject layer icon for that matter) this happens:
A.) if I disable [preferences>>file handling>>prefer ACR for JPEG files], PS calculates some seconds with intense HDD activity and then nothing happens visually, no window opens-up for editing, but the history log has the usual new entry "edit contents". Repeated tries result in repeated "edit contents" logs, but no visual changes. [[In one instance the raster grahpic encapsulated into the smart object got enlarged by 200%-300%. But again, no window opened up for editing. I hit "edit contents" 3-4 times and I could always reproduce this. But ever since that day, it never happened to me again).
B.) if I enable [preferences>>file handling>>prefer ACR for JPEG files], ACR launches and displays the raster graphic the smart object is based on. Upon closing ACR, no window opens-up for editing the smart object.
I have been working with smart objects for some months now and everything worked fine. This bug started occurring some 3 weeks ago, but as I said, sometimes it works, sometimes not. I cannot find any regularities as to what could lead to this malfunctioning. The only regularity I found so far (but could be a coincidence) is that the smart objects affected by the bug were always (at least I don't remember any other case) .jpeg files that I opened in Photoshop(CS3) with abovementioned preference set so that ACR launches upon opening a .jpeg file. In ACR I alt-clicked the open button so that it says "open objects". So the smart objects were always based on a single layer .jpeg raster graphic opened in ACR.
My best bet would be that there is something that ACR writes into the smart object that isn't 100% identical to the way Photoshop would write smart object if I:
1) open the .jpeg file in ACR
2) click open/open copy (not open object)
3) convert the raster graphic to a smart object inside Photoshop itself.
But that's only a guess. I have quite a lot of work to do currently, but I hope to be able to provide additional information quickly enough if need be.
I want to edit a smart object but without opening it in a blank file. so I can see what I am doing in relative to all the other objects in the file something like "edit in place".
I'm getting the following error when double clicking on a Smart Object in Photoshop (CS4) "Could not edit original smart object because the application which created the smart obejct could not be launched." Notes1. The SO was pasted into the psd file moments before from Illustrator.2. Both applications are open3. Both files sit on the same disk.4. XP Pro. Does anyone have an idea how to get PS to launch its sister program?
i noticed importing an image file from adobe illustrator into photoshop through copy and paste. but i dont have illustrator on my pc. is there a way to turn a layer or an image into a smart object without using the bridge feature they have now in CS2?
in cs2, i use smart object lot to replace image i mean i have to make collection of gallery of let's say mp3 albums so i have to put albums covers in my designs but exactly as i wanted in size {no matter whatever size/resolution the source (album cover) are} so smart objects always be the easiest way cos i firstly draw rectangulers in my custum size, and i covert each rectangulers to smart objects and replace every smart objects to place those albums covers. it's easiest way and since cs3 is launched, when i try to replace image of smart objects my replaced image(album cover) wont be as equal as my custum rectanguler size. this is my prob. when i place the images either they are placed bigger size than the size of smart object or smaller than smart object . can is there any process to make as shame size as smart object while placing images to smart object??? in cs2 it's possible but cs3 cs4 can't do such smart object or i'm a missing any new technique to do that? ya we can resize each placed covers to our custom size but it takes hell long time . i need shortcut way. wel in cs2 i been doin things like this using smart object which takes only 2 min to put images in my custom sized rectangular
I am trying to open a RAW photo in Photoshop CS5 as a Smart Object. I have the photo selected in Bridge. When I go to execute File>Place in Bridge CS5 the menu entry indicates there should be a menu displayed. However, clicking on Place does not bring up a menu.  In Photoshop there is open a blank file to receive the photo. Why do I not receive a menu?
I'm having aliasing issue with my smart objects in CS6 I never had before. I've searched all over PS and these forums to try and figure out how to get rid of the jaggies, with no luck. Below is a screenshot example of a SO with the aliasing (I'm trying to reconstruct a dresser top).
I have a smart object, and, If I apply Control "J" Â Â Or Drag It to the New Layer Icon, It will Duplicate the Layer. And If I Go to Layer-Smart Objects- New Object Via Copy, It dose the same thing. What Is the Different between Control J, or Go to Layer- Smart Objects- New Smart Object Via Copy.
Often after making vectro pictures in illustrator i use exporting to Photoshop like a SO. But i can't realize, why after exporting some elements like a blur or transparent mask is losing?
I working on the Photoshop with Smart Object with link to Illustrator. How can i transform perspective for Smart Object in Photoshop? There are accessible to me only Scale Rotate and Skew, others is gray out.
I was playing around with some images that I changed into Smart Object, and I noticed when you shrink the Images to a very small size, and later Transform It back to a bigger size, the quality dose not change,,Even when I saved them and opened them later on. But It dose not work with saving the Smart Object into JPG.
Is there a way to get Smart Objects to work on a different disc besides your Startup on a Mac? I'd like to set up a stand-alone SSD to handle all Smart Object operations. Currently, I'm getting the "Start-up disc is almost full" warning a little too often. It even crashed PS one time. I know you can change the Scratch Disc very easily, but I don't see any way to change how Smart Objects are handled.
I have a 'base' file A, with two (different) smart objects B and C. Now I want B and C to both contain a third smart object D, and I can't get that to work.
I can place the same file as a smart object in B and C, but it becomes two different smart objects, which are seperately editable. I would like to be able to edit smart object D and the changes to be visible in both B and C and in turn in A. Â Is this at all possible? Btw working in photoshop CS5
I need a smart object mask, I converted the layer to a smart object, using the mask panel to add a mask, I'm not getting a smart object mask instead a regular layer mask. I searched the adobe documentation.
