Apr 13, 2013

I just wanted to know if there was anyway to have lightroom 4 backup catalogs upon launching the program instead of upon exiting? I know in previous verisons you were able to do this..

Lightroom :: XMP - Backing Up DNG Files?

Jul 22, 2013

I shoot a Canon 5D Markiii which produces large files and take a long time to upload to my cloud backup. But when I make Lightroom changes only the XMP file changes. If I convert to DNG does that mean the entire file must be backed up whenever I make a Lightroom change?

Lightroom :: Backing Up Without Doing Anything To The Photo?

Dec 27, 2012

I am getting Lightroom.  I want to work out the best backup system.  I keep hearing, over the years, of people backing up their photos without doing ANYTHING to them as a first backup, right out of the camera.  Then they work on the photos which this first backup was taken from.  Is this inherently the best way to archive photos for long term quality?

Lightroom :: Backing Up Images

Mar 15, 2014

When I first installed LR4, I watched a video that said I could place my catalog on my mac's hard drive or use an external.  So, all my photos are on an external.  I'm trying to figure out how to backup those images, original & edited versions to another HD.  Time machine to my knowledge only backsup my computer itself.  I do back up my LR5 catalog upon closing it after use & it is stored in my users picture folder but my photos are all on a HD.  So if my external fails, my photos will be gone

Lightroom :: Backing Up LR Photos

Jan 15, 2014

I need backing up my lightroom photos onto an external drive. I understand you need to backup both your catalog and your photos. I have been backing up my catalog to a folder on my external hard drive. Does this automatic catalog backup include presets, edits and XMPs/metadata to the photos?

My main problem is I am super confused about backing up my photos. I have to admit I haven't done it for about 6 months since it was such a hassle last time. Here's my situation. 6 months ago I manually backed up everything I had from lightroom 3 at the time. Now, I want to back up the photos I've taken since then however I dont know how to do this without deleting my previous backup and then rebacking up everything again. If I just export my catalog into my external hardrive will that be sufficient? Also if I need to do it manually where do I even find my LR photos? Also, now I have lightroom 5 and I'm worried that if I just backup lightroom 5 then my presets and edits from lightroom 3 will not be backed up.I've heard that Microsoft Backup and Restore can automatically backup my files. How does this work? Will it automatically back up everything I need from LR (photos and all)?

Lightroom :: Backing Up Images And Catalog File

Apr 21, 2013

What is the best way to back up my data?

I normal export the entire catalog about once every two months (I'm not a heavy user) to an external hard drive and the catalog file (lrcat) too. Pluse I also back up the catalog file (lrcat) about once a week to the internal hard drive.I am not sure if this is the right way to go about backing up.

Lightroom :: Backing Up Catalog From Inside Extremely Slow (30 Min)

Apr 13, 2013

I have a catalog that is just under 5gb, if I navigate to the folder where it is stored and copy paste it onto my backup drive it copies in under 2 min. However, if I chose to backup my catalog on exit from inside lightroom it takes over 30 minutes (not counting testing etc). Obviously I can backup my catalog manually, but it would be nice if the built in backup feature worked like it's supposed to.

I'm running win 7 64 lightroom 64 same probelm in 4.3 and 4.4 the catalog and lightroom are stored on a ssd drive backing up to a NAS ( my typical transfer speeds are 60-80 MB/s)

Lightroom :: Changed Folder Structure Without Backing Up Catalog

Mar 20, 2014

I have managed to have to re-load my Lightroom 5 catalog which unfortunately is a month out of date. During that month I changed my folder structure and whilst I can see the folders and images on my hard drive, my Lightroom 5 catalog is as it was a month ago without the new folder structure and with a lot of photos missing. Obviously the link between the images and Lightroom has been lost because I changed the folder structure without backing up the catalog. re-link my photos and album structure to Lightroom ?

Lightroom :: Lost Previous Set Up Collections And Imports After Backing Up A Catalog?

Jul 25, 2012

I must preface this by saying that I am new to LR4 and I have been trying to follow instructions in a popular book as to creating collections, etc.  I have been trying to create collections and organize photos.  I recently shot a wedding and went through about 900 photos and whittled it down to 350 and now today for some reason I decided to back up a previous catalog and now everything I did yesterday appears to be gone and the only photos that I see in LR are those bridal photos in that catalog.

I know that this is the most amateaur of questions, but what in the world have I done, and can I recover that previous import and the changes I made to them?

Here is a problem:  I have many LR catalogs.

Is there a way to install all presets  to catalog whenever I create new one (just like a default preset) and also to old catalogs?

Lightroom :: Deleting Old Catalogs

When I delete old copies of LR5's catalog off of my backup external drive, I leave the 3 most current.  For some reason the next time I start LR, it cannot find the catalog, and I have to manually point to the backup, since I know that one is current.  I'd assume the one in My Pictures is current also, but for some reason I keep getting this error.

Lightroom :: Moving Catalogs From PC To Mac

Nov 15, 2012

I recently converted to Mac from pc, and upgraded from LR 3.6 to LR 4 at the same time.Apple transferred all of my pc files transferred to the Mac, and then I downloaded the LR upgrade. That may have been a mistake, as all of the 3.6 catalogs remained on the PC.  How do I get the 3.6 PC catalogs into the new version on the Mac? I'm thinking that perhaps I should uninstall LR, have Apple repeat the data migration, and then reinstall the LR 4? Or, is there another way?

Lightroom :: Catalogs Are Empty

I had imported photos as CR2's worked on them in develop screen. Closed Lightroom5. When I reopened it all catalog references are gone- from this session and previous sessions. So I pulled in the photos from folders but none of the metadata changes were there (I now know it's because they were imported as CR2's-- won't do THAT again!) Is there anyway to get changes back?

Lightroom :: Reinstalling Without Any Catalogs

I had a computer crash and burn.  My hard drive was ok,  I have a new computer and have rearranged all my photos on the new hard drive.  I need to start fresh with Lightroom but when I reinstall the software it auto loads the catalogs.  I have about 7000 photos and its a big job but I have to do it.  Can I reload Lightroom and not the catalogs?

Also,  If I delete all metadata and previews associated with my pictures will this also delete all editing of my photos or will that just get rid of the Catalogs?

Lightroom :: Accidentally Deleted Both Of Catalogs

Jan 2, 2013

In my New Years' organizing spree today, I decided to split my Lightroom catalog into two separate catalogs.  I didn't see an efficient way of doing this, so what I did was copy my entire catalog into a new catalog, and then I deleted (from disk) the ones that didn't belong in the respective catalog.  After I deleted a few "catalog A" photos from catalog B, I double-checked catalog A to make sure I wasn't totally deleting them. . .only to later find out that I was only looking at a thumbnail.  So now ALL of my photos are deleted, and I can't figure out how to restore them.

I used Time Machine to restore yesterday's version of Lightroom 4 lrcat.  I created a new catalog--trying to start fresh--tried to import the photos from LR 4 lrcat.  I have thumbnails, but on each it says "the file named x is offline or missing."

I also have a LR 3 catalog which houses the bulk of my years of photos since I just upgraded to LR4 a month or so ago.  I tried restoring that from Time Machine as well but was unsuccessful in getting anything more than a picture that says "the file named x is offline or missing."

Although I am hopeful because I do use Time Machine, I do have a foreboding feeling because at some point when I deleted over 1000 images, I got a message that said that this action could not be undone because I was doing it to 1000+ images.

I am using LR 4.3.  Using OS X 10.8.2.  I am using some RAW files, others from earlier years are JPGs.
