Illustrator Scripting :: How To Renumber Or Batch Rename All Layers In File
Feb 15, 2010
is there a quick way how to renumber or batch rename all layers in a file so they would be named in consequent numbers? Doesn't have to start from exact number, I was wondering if maybe there is some sort of script that would work?
I am trying to rename/renumber a folder of 100 pictures, so they are all in 3 digits, but remain in the order & have the same number associated with the same file. Right now the folder is numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.. I attempted to do the batch rename through Photoshop to make the folder 001, 002, 003.etc, BUT when I did this, the first picture 1 turned into 001..which is great...but the old 2 turns into 002, but is actually what 10 used to be.
19 turns into 011 instead of 019 40 turns into 035 instead of 040
Why is Photoshop changing the original number to a 3 digit, but changing the number it should have been. I just want it to be 001, 002, 003, 004, 005, 006, 007, 008, 009, 010, 011, 012..
I'm trying to find a script that batch rename/renumber a group of selected layers. So far I've been able to find a script that renames every single layer in a Photoshop document (overkill). Or there's the CS6 Tab rename trick (too slow).
I routintely export PSDs from Illustrator for use in After Effects. But in Photoshop, I'll get a couple hundred layers named <path> or <path> + <path> or <group>. Renaming by hand is out of the question. But I don't want to rename every layer the same.
Is there a system variable that disable the "Rename and Renumber Sheet" dialogue box from appearing when double clicking on layout tab of current drawing which is part of sheet set?
I used to be able to just double click on a layout tab and change it. This dialogue box can't seem to edit it if the drawing is open. We use the layout the tab as current revision of drawing.
I know I accidentally click on yes before when it asked me if I want to use the dialogue box to edit layout tabs but can't seem to find anything on how to disable it.
How to add the sheet description field into the rename & renumber window? I ask this because during the sheet set-up process we use the sheet description often, and I would like to go from sheet to sheet without having to right click and edit every sheet.

I have about 160-ish images I scanned in as .tif's (my scanner offers .bmp, .jpg, .png, and .tif for saving scanned images as) @ 300-dpi. I'd like to batch export them all to .xcf (for future working with) and .png (I know I could have chose png to start but I thought .tif would be the better choice as a first format). Is it possible to do this with a shell-script? I'm fairly certain I could concoct something to .tif -> .png using ImageMagick (I don't think it supports .xcf) but I'd like to use The GIMP for the whole process if possible, and I'd rather not do it by hand. As it is I'm going to have to figure out how to batch-rename (well, I know how I'm going to do it, a shell script, but how to write it is going to be the tough part for me) about 100 if the images to prepend a 0 to the file name (I started with a two-digit numbering system not realizing I had so many images and would like to keep all the names listing properly on FreeBSD).
Anyway, If such a shell export-to-xcf-and-png script is even possible (I really, really do not want to do this manually).
I'm trying to build a map of the world that includes provinces and sub-provinces (counties). I will be animating it in AE. AE only sees the top layers so it is imparative that the name of the top layer corresponds the the correct province. Unfortunately all the provinces are not layers. They are objects. I can use the "Release to Layers" command to get all objects nested into top level layers. But the top level layers have generic names (Layer 1, Layer2, Layer 3). The objects nested within these layers have the correct name.
Is there a script that will rename the top level layer using the name given to the object nested within that layer? If not, how to create one?
Here's a link to one of the files: world_all_provinces_Senegal divisions. Level 1_area.zip
I'm looking to create a script to batch rename a number of artboards.
- I have 100 named layers.
- I have 100 artboards.
- I would like to rename the artboards to match the layer names.
- The layers are organized in the same descending orderas the artboards (ignoring the actual artboard names*).
- The topmost artboard (1 in the list) would be renamed "newspaper", the second artboard would be renamed "typewriter", the third artboard would be renamed "books", etc.
*in the example below the artboard named "Artboard 7" is actually the 6th artboard in list.
i can´t get any Batch script to run.For example a PDF making Batch with a folder selection.I always get the alert, no matching files found.I use cs 5 on a g 5 with osx 10.8.2..why does no file fit in the "mask" ?

i'm totally new to scripting. i have a bunch of illustrator cs5 files (actually some of them might be older cs versions). they all have an artboard size of 200 x 200. i need to resize them to 700 x 700 and save them as png24 preserving transparency and keeping the same file name. is this possible? if so, any examples?
I'm looking for a script that can convert .ai/.eps to PNG from subfolders or multiple level of subfolders. i found this awesome script posted a year ago here by Larry G. Schneider [URL] however it doesn't get the files from subfolders, just the one folder you specify.
I found a script that does the job, export tones of ai files to pdf, but I have some files which are in sub folders, and I was trying to find a way to modify this script to include subfolder, but no luck.

I need to find a way to convert a LOT of ai files, individually, to low res pdf's. Preferably with the presets I want, not some defaults. I'm not interested in an action. I was hoping for a droplet, script, or something similar.
I did find this and it looked promising... [URL] ....
That almost worked. Ultimately, for some reason, it couldn't see the ai files sitting in the specified folder.
I have a couple thousand AI authored EPS files with a specific swatch name (SpotBlack) that I would like to rename (black) -- is there any method to do this en masse, preferrably outside of Illy using a text editor?
I have a couple of thousand old cliparts in .wmf format that I have to convert to .ai. What I need to do is simply open the .wmf, store it as .ai in exactly the same location.
Actions didn´t work because the files are in mutliple folders and subfolders. "Actions" keeped saving all the ai-files in the same folder. Which is kinda weird since this doesn´t happen when using the same action in PS.
Sure, there are some quality issues with converting wmf to ai - but for what we´re plannning the quality is sufficient.
CarlosCantos script at [URL]..... looked like the thing to do. Loaded it in apple script, patched the lines to open .wmf and saved it in the Illustrator script folder, but all I got was a bunch of error messages.
I created an Action to batch export a folder of .ai files to create 300dpi .png's of the .ai file's artboard. I did this by simply recording "Export...as png" with my desired settings then Batch running the Action on desired folder of .ai files. The files were successfully exported, the trouble is that the exported files lack a .png file extension. My intent is to take these PNG files and merge them into a single PDF using Acrobat Pro. Unfortunatly, without the .PNG extension, Acrobat Pro does not recognize the file types and does not let me use the Combine Files feature on them. Going back and manually adding a .png at the end of the exported files defeats the time-saving purpose of Batch Processing all together. Is there something I am missing or doing incorrectly? I have included screenshots of 1) My Batch Action settings 2) folders showing files without .png extension and 3) visual of what I see when I am trying to combine PNGs into a PDF.
Is it possible to reference layers or groups by their names instead of their index using VBA? If so, what is the sytax? I know you can do it in Extendscript, but I'm not finding info for VBA.
I am trying to export layers to SVG, but I need to access the "Use Artboards" option in my ExportType.SVG options. I do not see it in the Javascript reference: [URL]....
I'm trying to create a script via javascript for Illustrator.
My problem is : I have a AI file with multiple layers, i want to create one artboard per layer, in order to export a multipage PDF ( each page contain 1 layer ).
The layers represents the differents type of print ( vernish, color, hot gold, pressure ... ) and/or color type ( Pantone, CMYK, cut, kisscut ... ). My client want a PDF for see each type of print or color type per page.
I'm trying 2 ways :
1st solution : Create new artboards, and duplicate ( or move ) layers content on the new artboad, but the function move/duplicate don't work to move content on another artboard.
2nd solution : Create new document with the same number of layers as artboard and duplicate layer to the new artboard on the new document.
is there a way that I can loop through all layers and sublayers looking for a name of a layer? I have one that loops through only top level layers. I am thinking I have to somehow incorperate all pathItems, groupItems and the like to incorperate all types of "layers" there might be, since a group is technically not a layer but a groupItem.
this is what I am doing so far:
for (var i = 0; i < numberOfLayers; i++) { var customName = "div structure"; var myLayer = app.activeDocument.layers[i];
I am trying to add a prototype to the Layers object so I can do something like try{ .getByName(name) catch{ return null. For when the named layer doesn't exist. (It gives an error for me in CS5). So unfortunately me trying to go Layers.prototype. my method doesn't seem to work at all.
Is there a way to open a file as a layer? I want to open multiple files in the same window to make a collage. Currently, as I open each file they all open in separate windows. The "Open Document As Tabs" option in the User Interface preferences is not selected.
