Whenever I open a file in Illustrator via double-clicking the file in Windows Explorer, Illustrator resizes its main window, as if I've hit the "Restore Down" button in the upper right corner. I then have to click "Restore Up" to expand it to fill the screen again. I'm using Illustrator CS3 and Windows XP.
I am on a pc (windows 8) using illustrator cc and trying to save from an .ai file to an .svg file. I've also taken a previously saved svg and manually fixed the artboard, then saved. Still resizes the artboard. I've done this multiple times with sucess, but after updating the software last week, the artboard is expanding when I save. I thought I must have changed a setting, but don't think so. I've read lots of posts and tried all kinds of settings but here doesn't seem to be a solution out there. Wish I could go back to the older version!
I'm working with both Photoshop and Illustrator CS6 on a mac. I'm creating a graphic. The background is a (cartoonish) mouth and I finished it a couple of days ago. (It's an Illustrator file.) I've been working on the letters to go inside of the mouth, (Once I'm finished it'll look as though they're being crushed.) I scanned and edited small wooden letters in Photoshop, and now I would like to work with them with the background in Illustrator. I understand how to open a Photoshop file in Illustrator, but I don't want to open the document as a separate Illustrator file. Is there a way to open a file from Photoshop as a second layer?
Some of the letters repeat as well. Will I have to create two files for this, or can I open the same file twice?
Get this error when I try to open more than one file. Happens on different files, but especially on jobs that have side panels on packaging. The files have placed .psd images. Happens on different computers (10.6 & 10.8.2).
Can get the file open usually by closing the othere open file, but then is hard to copy and paste between files. Sometimes I get this when trying to open one file, but restarting Illustrator usually fixes this.
Have tried working directly from the hard drive, and still get this problem. Does to follow an exact pattern, can try to open file a, then b one day thsi will work another will fail. Seems like something is corrupting the memory, and usually happens with more complex files. Happens in CS5 & CS6, though I mostly work in CS5.
My current task is this: Open xml file from file system (later this will be from a remote service), parse the xml, display content from xml to user. There are further steps after this, but I am stuck at the first step itself. What illustrator plugin sdk APIs allow me to parse xml and create a dom out of it?
I received a .eps file (actually two of them) and cannot open it. I tried two different macs (Tiger & Leopard). Tried Illustrator CS 2, 3, 4, & 5. Tried Distiller and preview. Tried to import to InDesign, Illustrator & Quark. I keep getting "The file is in an unknown format and cannot be opened.
Emailed it to a friend who opened it immediately (Leopard & CS5), saved and returned a working file. I can't keep emailing people to open my files for me.
I am unable to open .dwg files in Illustrator 5 & 6 on my new Macbook Pro (OS 10.7.4). I get an error message "the plugin cannot be initialized for the lack of the initialization file "ADINI.DAT"." This computer had AI transferred using Apple's Setup Assistant.
I can open the same .dwg file on an different MacBook Pro in both AI 5 & 6 (the AI installation here was by disk).
It looks like I may need to remove & reinstall AI on the newer computer. But before I do that I'm wondering if there's an easier way. What do I need to do to be able to open .dwg files using AI6?
How do I save an illustrator cc file to open in cs6? I get an error when I send the file to a colleague and they cant open it.It doesn't give me any options.
I knew there would be a few quirks. I recently upgraded my Mac OS to SL 10.6.3. When using Illustrator (CS4), saved files as .EPS, do not have the appropriate Illustrator icon on the file. When I click on them to open, instead of opening in Illustrator, the file open in "Preview".
NOTE: ".AI" files saved, do not have the correct AI icon either, but do open in Illustrator.
A client sent an Illustrator CS6 file to me that I can't open, even though I am also on CS6. He is on a PC and has v 17.0. I am on a Mac with v 16.2.1. I don't see an update higher than that for Mac. Does he need to backsave the file to CS5?
I have CS5, and someone sent an .ai file that was created in CS6, and I am unable to open and edit page 2. Ideally, I would like to be able to have both pages open in one doc as artboards, however, if need be, I'm happy to just open page 2.If it matters, I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5.
When I try to open a AI, ID, PS file from windows explorer the file will not open and all I keep getting is an error message 5 telling me i need to uninstall and reinstall the software, but i have tried that with AI and it didn't work. But when I launch AI or another program and open the file it opens.
I can't open the .iso file from Isodraw (PTC) in Adobe Illustrator. Do i need to have a conversion agent to convert it to .ai in order to open in Adobe Illustrator?
A bit of an emergency going on here...I'm trying to deliver art to a printer and they are having trouble opening my files. I've got CS5 and they're using Corel X3.
When they try to open my AI file they're getting a 'corrupted' error. I sent EPS versions and they're getting font-related errors - but all of my fonts are outlined (the first thing I confirmed).
When I open an Illustrator document it opens full screen - meaning the top left corner of the document is at the very top left of my screen, (behind my tools) - and the bottom right is at the very bottom right of my screen (and behind my palettes). Is there a preference setting so that a file would open in the middle of my screen - NOT full screen?
We first get a digital proof form printers as .pdf. Sometiems they save them with PDF compatible on. This makes my job harder because will get ilustrator asking for all the links when opening the .pdf.
What we do is open the .pdf form the printere, adn paste this on topof our orignal .ai file. This is to proof what theyt changed. Adding in theri product numbers, adn updating the UPCS is about all we want to see. What we look for is shifting type, or missing elelements.
when i go to open or save a file in illustrator, the pop up box will only last 2 seconds? i just recently installed the new maverick osx but it was working fine yesterday.
I am using CS6, as is the other user. When they open the file in Illustrator all the artwork is on one layer, even though the original file has numerous layers, and opens with these layers when I open it even now.I have never come across this problem before in all the years I have used Illustrator and have had no joy when trying to search for this problem.
When I open a PDF file I get the following warning:
The document contains PDF objects that have been reinterpreted.
- The font is missing
Can I somehow open the file without showing that error, or simply automate and click OK on that window? I am using C# with COM reference. See code below:
var iapp = new Illustrator.Application(); var idoc = iapp.Open(file, Illustrator.AiDocumentColorSpace.aiDocumentRGBColor, null);
When I double click an AI file to open it, I get this message: "Can't open the illustration. There is not enough room for the window, increase document area and try again". This error started happening about a week or two ago. Although it is inconvenient to have to go to File>Open and then locate the file to open it since I am used to doing it the other way at least it is a way to open the AI file. I just discoved that if I double click a graphic in a Adobe Acrobat Pro using the Edit Object I get the same error message. This is a problem.I have checked previous discussions about this and tried things like unchecking the "open as tab" option in the preferences but that does not work.
I drew a beautiful SVG for a website, just coded it in html/css/javascript. (It's in there, just scroll around)

It needs finishing by hand ... how on earth do I open it in Illustrator?
I downloaded it as an .svg via SVG Crowbar. (That's the only way I know to extract an .svg and am happy to try your better strategies)
.When I ask Adobe File -> Open -> and choose it, Adobe says "can't open illustration."
Fwiw, Reader error is "could not open graph.svg bc it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged, for example it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded"
Inkscape will open graph.svg, no problem. But I was hoping to try out Illustrator.
"Can't open illustration. File is locked or in use. ID = -54" shows up when I try to install the Ai2Canvas.aip plugin on my Macbook Pro. I'm using Illustrator CS5. What do I have to do to make this plugin work?
1) If I double click on a file, it opens in Illustrator, but it does not open with my default workspace settings. If I open the file from the file menu, my preferred workspace opens. and 2) If I have one file open, I cannot double click on a second file and have that file open in Illustrator. I just get the little spinning circle and then it stops. I can still open a second file from the file/open menu option.
The problem is: From within Windows Explorer, I can only open 1 Illustrator file at a time. To get a different file to open, I either have to drag and drop the second file into the tabs under the menubar, or I need to quit Illustrator and re-open it. Also, I can not open additional files from Explorer one-at-a-time if one is already open.
Quirks:
If I go to File -> Open I can select multiple files from within the Open File dialogue window and they open just fine. but i can't do it from within windows explorer. This used to work and now it doesn't.
