Can you change the default for the magic wand tool? I use it all the time and having to manually put it to a tolerance of 0 all the time is just a little annoying.
CS6, windows.

I have a JPEG image from a drawing which I need for a design but I don't need certain parts of the image.
Does illustrator allow me to make a selection of the parts I don't need (in a jpeg image) and delete them? Or is the only option Photoshop with the Magic Wand tool, although Illustrator has that one too?

When I use the magic wand in Photoshop CS5, it selects the entire image, not just the section I'm hovering over. I'm working in a Windows environment.

Select with the Magic Wand tool
I am curious about the math for the Magic Wand Tool in the following circumstance:
The RGB image has been converted to GREYSCALE and then into LAB mode.
The lightness channel is selected only and I wish to create various selections with MAGIC WAND TOOL based on numerical values entered in the field TOLERANCE.
The image (as described above) shows values in PERCENTACE for K (Black) when in LAB mode.
Now how does the value of TOLERANCE correspond to the value K: for this case?

trying to learn and use selections... I have a image from which I want to extract only the complete faces of some people. it's a tough one since the background and the hair are difficult to distinguish for some people even when using the magic wand. What I am trying is (while using the magic wand tool) is that I click on part of the image and if feels that the selection is correct then i do a right click and then select "Add to selection"...
Question: Once I have done so a couple of times, can I somehow display/show the intersection (SUM) of all the areas that I had added as selection and then either copy/paste or do somethiing.

I'm an illustrator... working in both digital & real artwork.
I work mostly in Photoshop CS, but I have been searching for a solution to a digital problem that I can't quite seem to find using either Photoshop or Illustrator.
What I wish to do is scan a pencil drawing and then create selected shapes in a quick and easy method using a magic wand tool.
But it needs to be a magic wand tool that will select an area drawn from a series of broken lines. Photoshop will only select shapes that are 100% intact, so I wind up having to spend lots of time searching to repair broken lines before Photoshop selects just that one area.
I KNOW that such a program exists... because I recall there used to be such a program.
It was a free dowloaded program that I got once, way back around 1998. I think it came from Australia... and it was a basic digital paint program of some sort. I can't recall the name.
It allowed one to quickly click and select an area from within a shape drawn with broken line segments...
Does anyone know of any program (hopefully for Mac) that allow this sort of selection?
This would save me hours of frustration. I can't believe Adobe hasn't come up with something like this already.

Not sure why this is happening, but every time I go to using the magic wand tool, it isn't allowing me to select everything. A big square is left behind. There's only one layer that I'm trying to work with. I feel like I accidentally pressed something on the keyboard, but not sure what is going on...

When I want to cut an item out of an image, I create a mask on the image's layer and paint out everything except the item I want to keep. Something has changed and I can no longer select that remaining item in the layer after I've applied the layer mask and essentially painted out everything else.
For instance if I wanted an apple cut out of a tree, I would paint everything in black except that apple, which remains white in the mask. After applying the mask to the layer, I should be able to click in the empty space around the apple wtih my magic wand tool and have it make a perfect selection around that apple, yet the magic wand tool is still picking up the leaves, branches, etc. Even though I've painted them out and applied the mask, essentially deleting them, and all I can see is the grey and white checkerboard grid behind the apple.
This is Photoshop CS6 and it was working fine before. Did I change something without realizing it?

I am working on a research project that involves evaluating the relative abundance of various colors in a leaf. The leaves that I am working with have three distinct sections of color (green, burgundy, and coral).
I have scanned images of the leaf samples on a flat bed scanner (all with the same quality) and am using the magic wand tool to determine the total pixel count of the leaf and the total pixel count for each individual color. With this data, I determine the relative percent of each color within the leaf. Code:

I am currently using Adobe CS4 trial version, and I have to complete one small project by the end of this weekend. For this project, I need to use the Magic Wand Tool which I cannot find in Adobe CS 4 trail version. Anyone has had similar experience? Also, my refine edges tool seems not to be functioning properly. It does not save any changes to the object after clicking "OK". I have no idea what is going on.
I am pretty new to Adobe Photoshop. I am now relying mainly on the online tutorials, and there it says that it should save all the changes after clicking "OK".

Every time I try to use the magic wand tool to erase things from a picture the program says there is a problem either look online for a solution or close the program and I choose to look online but it just closes the program down completely. I had not been having any trouble at all and it just immediately started doing this and I had been using the very same tools as I am trying to use now. I am extremely frustrated and I even deactivated the program, uninstalled it, and then reinstalled thinking this would fix it.

In this example I did the following
1. used the circle marquee and did a 8 point stroke.
2. Selected the circle with the magic marquee to get an active selection
3. Gradient tool
Doing the above results in jagged edges that alias badly once I fill the selection with the gradient. With a basic color the circle is perfeclty fine, only once I add the gradient the edges become jagged. How might I fix this?

I used to have an Illustrator action that selected all shapes with a similar fill and stroke. But since actions are completely broken in Illustrator CC, I've tried getting used to the Magic Wand tool, which basically does the same thing. Except in order to make it only select shapes that have the exact same stroke and fill like I want, you have to select all the checkboxes in the Magic Wand palette and set the tolerance values to zero. I don't mind doing that once, but Illustrator keeps reverting the tolerance setting to 32 and unchecking every box except "Fill Color" every time I restart Illustrator. I even tried setting the panel the way I want it in each New Document Profile and saving the files, but that had no effect.

I thought that when you had the magic wand selected and you clicked on a fill, it selected all items that were that color, right? I thought I've been doing that for several years now. However, now, clicking the fill does nothing. Clicking the stroke selects things, but clicking the fill doesn't.
Either something got changed in my settings with the latest update, or something is broken in the update.
Using a Mac, running CC, latest update as of this posting.

I have a jpeg with a white background and solid colored clipart image. I need to remove the colored part of the jpeg image with magic wand in illustrator cs6 and make it a vector image. The magic wand doesn't seem to do anything in illustrator. I did it in Photoshop and saved it as a PNG with trnsprnt background opened it up in illustrator and it was all jagged. It is such a simple image, only two colors, blue on white.

I frequently used the ctrl key shortcut in illustrator on a PC to temporarily use the selection tool last used. This still works in CC, but I used to be able to toggle selection tools by keeping ctrl held down as before and then toggle selection tools (selection tool - black arrow, and direct selection tool - white arrow) by tapping the shift key. The tool description in the very bottom of the window shows "toggle selection" when I do this, but the toggle selection tool doesn't actually occur.

Draw closed paths with the Pencil toolSelect the Pencil tool.Position the tool where you want the path to begin, and start dragging to draw a path. After you’ve begun dragging, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS). The Pencil tool displays a small circle (and, in InDesign, a solid eraser) to indicate that you’re creating a closed path. When the path is the size and shape you want, release the mouse button (but not the Alt or Option key). After the path closes, release the Alt or Option key.You don’t have to position the cursor over the starting point of the path in order to create a closed path; if you release the mouse button in some other location, the Pencil tool will close the shape by creating the shortest possible line back to the original point.it doesn't for me. after i start drawing and i hold the option key, it goes to drawing a straight line. i don't hold the key till after i start drawing lit says.
same thing with the connect two paths. holding the command key doesn't change the behavior of the pencil tool.i'm guessing there is no way of remapping the 'smooth tool' to option again? or was it moved to another hotkey?

I was using my magic wand to select things with no trouble, then began working on something else. When I went back to using the magic wand, it was a rectangle and I couldn't get it to select anything. When I pressed the shift key, it would turn into the wand with a plus sign beside it.
