GIMP :: Options To Move / Rename Layers
May 9, 2011I am running Ubuntu Linux 10.04. On my older linux pc GIMP included a menu option I think to access Layers, might have been Dialog --> Layers, I don't remember. This version of GIMP has Layer --> New Layer, but it's not immediately obvious in looking through all the menu bar options where to get to a Layers dialog where I can move layers, rename them, etc.

Oct 30, 2012So all of a sudden, out of the blue I have a problem creating layers.Whenever I create a new layer in the layer properties manager i give it a name (as you would) I then select make make current in the layer propertis manager so I progress to work in this new layer and..... The name changes back to the default Layer1 in the Layer Properties Manager but in the Layer dropdown the name of the layer is as i renamed it.this is happening on two non networked computers and on old drawings and new files alike.

Oct 9, 2012I'm trying to find a script that batch rename/renumber a group of selected layers. So far I've been able to find a script that renames every single layer in a Photoshop document (overkill). Or there's the CS6 Tab rename trick (too slow).
I routintely export PSDs from Illustrator for use in After Effects. But in Photoshop, I'll get a couple hundred layers named <path> or <path> + <path> or <group>. Renaming by hand is out of the question. But I don't want to rename every layer the same.

AutoCad :: Use Script To Rename Layers In A Set Of Drawings
Feb 13, 2012I want to use a script to rename layers in a set of drawings, but I want it to just ignore layers in the script that are not present in that particular drawing, so for instance, the following won't work:
-rename
layer
ABC
DEF
As every time it arrives at a drawing that doesn't have the ABC layer, it stops to tell me so. I've got around the analogous problem with blocks by using the following script:
(setq oldblockname "POWER")
(setq newblockname "POWER2")
(setq ss1 (ssget "X" (list (cons 2 oldblockname))))
(if ss1 (command "rename" "b" oldblockname newblockname))
but I can't seem to adapt it for layers. I did think of 'making' a layer before attempting to rename it, and this works to a degree, as it doesn't seem to mind if the layer already exists, but unfortunately if the layer ABC isn't present, then DEF is, and it stops to complain that I'm trying to rename a layer to a name that already exists.
AutoCAD 2010 :: Rename Dialog Box - Creating New Layers
Oct 17, 2012How could I be bringing up the Rename Dialog Box when I am in the Layer Dialog Box creating new layers? It seems to happen from now and again mostly when I go to change the color of the new layer. This shouldn't be an issue but once the box comes up, all my work inside the layer dialog box will be lost when I close it and reopen it.
Doesn't matter if I pick "OK" "CLOSE" or the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the box. Rename command, just what I hit, strike or click that brings it up and hopefully a means to change my CUI so I don't do it anymore.

Apr 5, 2013I'm new to working with scripts and have played with it a little bit but my knowledge is severly lacking, I picked up script pro and have had some success batching simple commands.
What I have is a large database with differing layer convensions that I want be able to run a script that will open rename layers save and close, the layers are not of the same name but similar enough that I could set peramiters for less then a duzon layer names and catch my target then rename it to a standard, for example "A-wall exterior" to "A-WL-EXT", a simple enough command but within the database the "A-wall exterior" could be one of a duzon simmilar names.
My thought was to run the -rename la "layername" "layername" qsave script but when the original layer is not found it gets stuck untill script pro times out and fails. If there is some way to search out names and once found rename that would work.
GIMP :: Unable To Rename Layer / Images When Exported
Feb 2, 2014I seem to be unable to rename either layers or images if they are being exported. When I use alphabet letters to rename a layer, for example, GIMP toggles through tools. It is using shortcuts to open different things? . I have something checked or unchecked that will allow alphabetic renaming....where do I look ?

Jun 21, 2013I have about 160-ish images I scanned in as .tif's (my scanner offers .bmp, .jpg, .png, and .tif for saving scanned images as) @ 300-dpi. I'd like to batch export them all to .xcf (for future working with) and .png (I know I could have chose png to start but I thought .tif would be the better choice as a first format). Is it possible to do this with a shell-script? I'm fairly certain I could concoct something to .tif -> .png using ImageMagick (I don't think it supports .xcf) but I'd like to use The GIMP for the whole process if possible, and I'd rather not do it by hand. As it is I'm going to have to figure out how to batch-rename (well, I know how I'm going to do it, a shell script, but how to write it is going to be the tough part for me) about 100 if the images to prepend a 0 to the file name (I started with a two-digit numbering system not realizing I had so many images and would like to keep all the names listing properly on FreeBSD).
Anyway, If such a shell export-to-xcf-and-png script is even possible (I really, really do not want to do this manually).
Lightroom :: Rename On Import Doesn't Rename Source Images?
Feb 5, 2013Is it possible to have Lightroom rename the source images according to my custom naming convention?
I just imported 278 photos and they are all correctly renamed within Lightroom however the source files retained the original Canon generated names. I want to rename them for backup/in case I ever decide to stop using Lightroom/etc.

Even if i "discard text information" from layer..and then save it as .xcf it doesnt work! Same layers appear as text layers when i open that .xcf Its not a big deal but it really slows me down when im working with layers..

GIMP :: How To Put Layers Into Groups
Jun 27, 2013how I can put my layers into groups now, but there are a few problems I've seen pop up.
First are foremost, when I disable the visibility on a group, if I use the move tool it will select layers from that group that were visible before the group was made invisible. Seriously, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that I would ever want to move an individual layer that I can't see. This clearly is a glitch and needs to be fixed.
Second of all there is an issue with a layer's mode when it is in a group. For example, if a layer is set to multiply, if it is set in a group it will only multiply on layers within that group. Now this I can see a good use for, but honestly, it is not how I usually want to use layers. I'm not usually trying to separate the actual graphics in my image, I'm just trying to organize my massively long layer dialogue into something more useful. It's great to collect different aspects of my image and keep them all together. But basically every time I need a multiply layer or other effect, I need it to effect the whole image. To keep it effecting an entire image I have to make two separate groups, each above and below the layer, in order to organize my image.
Now, since there is certainly an advantage that could be given by not having such layers have any effect outside of their group, I can't argue that the feature should be removed. However, I do think it would be fantastic if a property could be added to a layer group that would allow for such layers to effect the image outside of the group or not.
The third thing I have to say about groups is linking. First of all, as it stands, when I activate linking on a layer group it has absolutely no effect, making the option redundant. However, what would be useful is if I could link an entire group to itself and then move every layer within a group in tandem.
Often times I want to move several groups of layers around so I can arrange a composition. For a simple example, maybe I have several images of characters, each built with a layer for flats, lighting, textures, etc. And to arrange the composition I want to move the whole character with all its layers to one spot, then grab another character with all of its layers to another spot.Conventionally, there are only two ways I can do this. Either I flatten each of those groups and move them as single layers, destroying my ability to alter them with any level of convenience, or I have to manually link every layer for that character, move it, un-link every layer, link all the layers in another character, and repeat.But it would be so much nicer if I could link all the layers within several groups, and move each group as a whole without moving any other layers.
Since the link option on a layer group doesn't do anything anyway, it seems reasonable to me that enabling it should have that exact effect. Using the same example, if I have each character in its own group, I activate the link option on all of those groups all at once, and then I can grab a layer on any group and that whole group will move, but not any other layers.Even if it automatically linked all the layers in that group to all other linked layers, it would still be much easier to activate and deactivate the link on just one group each time I move that one group, rather than each individual layer.
GIMP :: Layers Will Not Toggle
Dec 25, 2012GIMP example.docx (Size: 141.1 KB / Downloads: 31) I just found about GIMP several days ago. I really like the features that are offered and cant wait to dive in and play around with it. However, I am getting a bit discouraged because it is not working on my computer the way it does when I visited some u-tube videos. So far I have a problem with the layers. I selected, new, added two layers, therefore I had three layers to work with. When I would toggle between the layers the picture didn't change at all, the screen only allowed me to view the last picture I imported. So, I thought I would hide the third picture and work with the second to see what would happen. I scaled the second picture and it scaled them all (note: the pictures where not linked). I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program and it still did the same thing. I am working with Windows 7 if that makes any difference?

Feb 10, 2013It is my first time using Gimp and although i have figured everything i needed by myself, but i have a doubt, well im adapting a bunch of sprite work from one rpg maker engine (unknown name) to RPG Maker VX ACE, i have no problem there , the thing is that now i have 3 images that are exactly the same except from the color scheme and i was wondering if it is possible the put all them on a canvas and cut and paste the 3 layers at the same time on another canvas, something like this:

GIMP :: Cannot Open Layers
Apr 10, 2012I've had GIMP for quite awhile but I haven't been able to use it effectively for any projects simply because I cannot open, use, or view the layers dialog box.
I've tried Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Layers - this does not work. And I've tried using the shortcut, Ctrl + L, this does not work either. I've also tried uninstalling/reinstalling GIMP, but this hasn't solved the issue either.
GIMP :: 2 Layers - Mask One Through The Other (PNG)
Jun 20, 2013I have 2 layers and I want to mask one through the other. I've attached a png showing what I want. Here is what I am doing:
- select the text layer
- menu -> "Layer/Transparency/Alpha to selection" (now the outline letters are selected)
- select the background layer
- hit delete button
- no change in image
If I do the following steps, then the entire background is cleared:
- select the text layer
- menu -> "Layer/Transparency/Alpha to selection" (now the outline letters are selected)
- menu -> Select/Invert
- select the background layer
- hit delete button
- background image deleted

Nov 10, 2012I'm new to GIMP, downloaded v 2.8.2 today. I opened an image, selected duplicate layer, which was named image_name (copy) - so far so good, but when I make any changes to that it makes changes to both layers, I can NOT find instructions anywhere on how to select just the (copy) layer, one would think it would be automatic, that the program would only work on a single layer.

Now I have look all over for a way to make brushes there own layer with out having to go through the hole seal of creating a new layer shrinking it to fit the brush. then having to drag the new layer to were I want it then having to place the brush.
I just wish to place the brush and automatically have it as a new layer. I have been told to look at Gimp::fu but I don't under stand how to do that kind of stuff.
