AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Finding The Extents Of Label Components
Nov 29, 2012
I am having some difficulty figuring out how to get the extents to a civil 3d label object. I want to be able to select a label, and draw a custom polyline around it (in dragged state) and draw a leader or multiple leaders from that new polyline. I just can't seem to figure out how to get at the label data itself.
I want to modify the default Profile Grade Break label style that comes with the product as I don't want the line component in the style. When I delete the line component I have to reconfigure the attachment points of the remaining components. I want the marker to attach to the feature, then the PVIS to the marker, then the PVIE to the PVIS. The problem is these components are in the wrong order in the style and thus I can't get the PVIE to be left aligned with the PVIS. There apparently is no way to re-order the components in the style. The only solution seems to be to delete and recreate them in the proper order. Is this the case? If so then there defintely needs to be an enhancement in the product to change the order.

I'm attempting to create a profile view and then modify the label by overriding the text components. Unfortunately the profile view bands don't populate the labels until after my command is complete making it not possible to modify them in one command. Is there a way to update the band to have it show the labels?
The label associated to a grading point when is moved when is moved changes its size automatically and a leader appears. After this happen no control over the grading point and its associate label. refer to the image below.
C3D 2013. We have profile line labels, some of which get manually edited (for example, change the "<[Tangent grade(FP|P2|RN|AP|GC|UN|SD|OF)]>" to a static number such as 0.29%).
However, if you CTRL+Click and select one of these labels and change the style of that one label, then the manual edits are lost and the label reverts back to the default string.
I'm trying to label my Profile label stations as raw stations, 20~20 meters, and I'm not being able to adapt the format to STATION 0, STATION 2, without any plus zeros or +, or -, or commas, or anything, as following in the image.
when i zoom extents, my dwg gets very small and hids in a corner...as if there is something else on the page way off in space. i've tried to find it but theres nothing visible. everything is thawed/on and there are no wipeout frames. i tried to Erase All...then deselect my drawing...but still nothing.
Is there an easy way to get the geometric extents of a profile view and bands? It appears that in Civil 3D 2013 .NET the Geometric Extents returns the extents of the profile excluding the bands. I don't like the prospects of either doing the math for all of the bands assigned to the profile view or exploding the profile view to get it and the bands as a block and getting the extents that way. My C3D 2013 just started doing this last week... I first noticed that it would zoom to extents when I operated the center mouse button for panning. It was random, about 1 out of every 15 to 20 pans using the center button.
But then I noticed that it's not just the panning. It will randomly zoom to extents when I type in a command. Earlier today, it did it when I did a REGEN, then again when I did a MAPWSPACE.
The other notable thing is that there is no "zoom" command anywhere in the command history when this occurs.
Besides changing the mice, I also tried rebooting and running a repair on C3D. I have Win7-64.
The problem seems to coincide with when I started using Autodesk 360. Not saying it's related, but it's fishy.
In paperspace, each time I double click inside the viewport it automatically zooms to the extents of my drawing, changing the scale. Also, when I switch back to model space i am zoomed to extents in model space. How can I fix this?
Is it possible to pin a label to another label ? Or pin a label to an object so that when the first label (or object) is moved, the other moves with it ?
I was given a AutoCAD file (see attachment) and I need to make a visual surface. This is for a university project and I don't have a lot of experience with Civil 3D.
Is there a way if I want my suface to be exploded for the components to be sent to different layers. For example if I make a building pad using the grading tool and create a surface for a design. I would like the minor and major contours to be on different layers. Same for my grading I would like my cut daylight boundary to go to a CG-Cut and fill daylight boundary to go to CG-Fill layers. Is there a way to do this? It would really streamline my work designing pads.
In the case of horizontal alignment, one can choose any component and edits its properties (attached) such as its label height (attached).
I’m wondering why such option is not available in the case of “profile view”. The selected component doesn’t bring its edits option (as in the case of horizontal alignment”) and thus one can’t edit its properties like labels (attached).
Then how to edit the components of the “profile view”?
I have made a 3D model of a frame for my work; when I try to add in the dimensions I cannot find the dimension between for example one horizontal line (in front view) and one vertical line. And sometimes when I manage to click on the two lines, it says "the lines are parallel".
I have alingment style components set to various layers, where I control their plot and view style. After years of successful control, recently I found that I the viewports are not displaying the layers correctly pertaining to the sytle. For example, I have line & curve components set to a layer C-Road-Cl and all properties by layer. Then in various viewports throughout the project, I'll set viewport overrides to control color and plotsytle of those components.
Today, I found that the C-Road-Cl layer will not control the view of the components or the plotsytle, and that the objects are only being controlled by the layer that the object is on. But, this does not relate to Object Layers Drawing Settings, as I have the "immediate and independent layer on/off...." box unchecked. Further, nothing seems to affect the color of the object in the viewport.
After further research, I found that the a completely different layer is controlling the viewport display of the "line & curve" components (C-Road-Stan) and the alignment object layer is controlling the plotstyle.
I went out with our GPS and shot each of our stock piles we have in our yard (recycle asphalt, 3/4" gravel, 1" gravel, etc.), and now I want to figure out how much of each pile we have
So what I did was create a seperate surface for each pile, then I created a volume surface for each as well and just set the base and compare surface as the existing, that wat was I can get the total sq ft of each pile, but now I want to figure out how much yards of material are in each pile
Would I need to set up a materials list for each on to calc how much are in each pile according to what type of material they are?
I have opened a drawing created by someone else and see that it is loaded with data shortcuts and they all seem to be working properly and displaying fine. The problem is that I would like to add some more shortcuts to the project yet I cannot find the folder where they are located on our server. I have opened up source drawings for every one of them and there are no data shortcut folders located in the same path as the source drawings nor in my project file. They have been stored miscellaneously somewhere on my server. I have tried searching by name (*.xml) for the data shortcuts on my server but the names are too generic and I get to many hits to locate the one I need. Is there any way to list a data reference and the program tell you the folder where it is getting it from?
we got cad files from an older survey done for a realtor. Everything was in pretty bad shape, with blocks everywhere. Since then the drawings have been cleaned up significantly. But I am having issues with two line types referencing a .shx file we don't have. The line types will not come out in a purge or manual delete efforts. I tried to do a filter by linetype but it continues to feed back 0 selected. I am wondering if the line types are used in a block definition that isn't drawn anywhere on the screen.
Is there a way to determine what linetypes are used in what blocks? Ultimately once the lines that use the two linetypes are located they will be changed to a different one and purged out of the drawing.
I have a need to find the lowest elevation inside of a small rectangular polygon (6'x7'), then assign the polygon to that elevation. This is fairly easily done manually with feature lines, however I need to repeat the operation about 3,000 times to create a design grid (therefore, not obliged to using all of the design budget to do so).
I employed the GIS department to run the analysis, which they can do, however they can't rotate the DEM grid output to match my project because it doesn't run parallel to north/south, thus skewing the results.
where I can download standard USGS hatch patterns for identifying differnet strata in geologic columns. I know the USGS has standard patterns for specific strata and I was looking for a .pat file that has them all in it.
Is there a surface setting / style option where contour labels (elevations) will display at some specified interval as part of the surface rather than going through and adding them as labels afterwards? Seems like a rudimentary operation, where the labeling can be so scattered and random.
I need to rough in a drainage pipe network that connects several structures around a site. The pipe inverts need to be 6.5' below the finished floor of each unit and must maintain a minimum 2% slope. The network needs an outfall at some undetermined point on the site. The pipes must follow some existing roads, so they are not interconnected directly to each structure.
How can I go about determining the potential outfall locations?
How i can take off or remove the message "finding exterior borders". This appear in the left bottom corner of Civil 3D.....it makes that my computer is very slow...
I am trying to work a routine that will draw tangents with or without curve in a profile by calling the command in the Toolbar icon to "Draw Tangents" button that is on the Profile Layout Tools toolbar. I can't seem to locate the command that I could execute at the comand line or in LISP. Where can I find a complete list of C3D commands to reference?
I have C3D 2012. I want to label a part of an arc. The arc has 3 lines that intersect it. I want to label the overall arc and the pieces of the arc. The overall arc is not a problem. How can I label the parts of the arc without breaking it up?
I keep getting the words "Label Text" being placed at 0,0 every time I insert a profile view into my drawing. Is there a simple way to change something in the settings to either not display this at all or sontrol how/where it is displayed? It is annoying when you do a zoom extents being you now get 2 small dots on screen, 1 being the actualy drawing at the correct utm cooridnates and the other being this piece of text down at 0,0.
I have applied a client's style to the alignment to show PI's. In this case we have 2 alignments close to each other (NB & SB of road). PI's close to each other will then overlap. What I would like to do is apply a style that will have the line and text go exactly in the opposite direction. I am trying to avoid dragging the text as that seems to bring up several more issues. I am looking for whatwhere to change within the style editor to make this happen.
