Photoshop :: Automatic Clipping Masks

Jun 8, 2009

I'm not sure how this started, but whenever I create a new adjustment layer, it automatically comes with a clipping mask to the layers below it.  If I run an action with adjustment layers, all are clipped to the masks below them.  I've looked for toggle switches in the preferences and elsewhere (with no luck) for a way to turn off this feature.

Photoshop :: Clipping Masks

Jul 20, 2012

Everytime I add an adjustment layer to CS5 layers palette, the adjustment layer comes in as a clipping mask and is clipped to the layer below.  I must have accidently invoked something that is causing this.  It is very frustrating and time consuming have to change each layer in my stack. WHAT DID I DO WRONG... and HOW DO I FIX IT.

Photoshop :: Clipping Masks...

Oct 13, 2005

clipping masks.

some background on what im trying to do is create an image i can place over my snowboard. The folks over at snowboardart.com will then sell the art for you. Really, im just interested in getting something on there for me... But to get to it, they give you a file that has the outline of a snowboard and i want to only see whats inside of that shape. (problem here is that the file comes in an illustrator or acrobat file, not a photoshop one...)

Photoshop :: Clipping Masks

Mar 13, 2009

I'm using CS2 Photoshop and Illustrator for class projects. I know almost nothing about the products. I want to edit photos by removing parts of them and I was told to use clipping masks. I'm not getting what I want. Sometimes the area I want masked "disappears" but when I combine it with other elements in my composition the edges of the photo are still there although they are "whited out" (Sorry, I'm explaining this the best I can). I can't seem to get just the editted shape without the part that is masked.

I also don't know what the definitions are for things like "Clipping Masks", "Merge Layers" vs "Group Layers", etc. Most of the time I know what I want to do but I don't know the Adobe term for what it is called. This makes it impossible to look for a tutorial or other help.

I've used MS Publisher for many years but Adobe has me totally baffled.

Photoshop :: Clipping Masks And Transparent Layers

Jul 29, 2012

i had a layer with text on it that was pretty transparent. if I cmd + click the layer i usually get a selection around the text, but somehow because of the transparency it selected very little of it, even though I can clearly see the letters very well.

then i tried adding a clipping mask above the transparent letter with a bit of color and the clipped layer would not eve show up. I had to unclip to see it.

Photoshop :: Adjustment Layers And Clipping Masks

Oct 11, 2012

I am having an issue with clipping masks only affecting the intended layer no matter what color background I have on.

For example - I have some lettering that I want to apply a gradient map adjustment layer on. In order to only affect the type layer I hover between the adjustment layer and the type layer while holding Option + click to get the double b+w circles to clip it.

When I clip my ad layer, I don't get my effect. The only way I see the adjustment gradient effect is if I unclip my adjustment layer, but then this affects my ENTIRE background rather than just the type.

Is there a trick to keep the adjustment effect without affecting the rest of the layers no matter what color background I have? Adjustment gradients seem to work best on black backgrounds only. The problem is that my original document has a red background so I HAVE to clip it in order for the gradient not to affect my red background. But even on a black background, I have to unclip the ad layer to see the effect. This is weird.

I could flatten my document and extract my type with all its effect glory and just import it into my original doc, but selecting and extracting blurred type would be a big slap on the head.

Illustrator :: Can't Flatten Clipping Masks

Apr 22, 2013

I have a few files that I need to flatten clipping masks on and for some reason they just won't flatten. It either keeps the mask after flattening or just blows it out completely as if no mask was created. I can't seem to pinpoint what is causing it as sometimes it works and other times it does not. I'm trying to attach to show an example but I'm getting an error of doesn't support property or method?

Illustrator :: Avoid Borders In Clipping Masks

May 6, 2013

I'm designing a new logo for a client and I would like a rectangular form on the background. There is a C-formed shape in the rectangle which should be clipped in the final version. (so if used on black background for example, there's only the regular form on the background with the C in it, but not the shape of the C outside the rectangle on the left and right of the rectangle).

Clipping could be an option but it gives me those fine strokes...

The first image is the ideal result (but not clipped so with shapes of the C outside the box on a coloured background). The 2nd is the result when clipped. Note the small lines where the C-shape touches the borders of the rectangle on the left, right and bottom of the rectangle.

Illustrator :: Why Are All Paths In Clipping Masks Compounded

Sep 9, 2013

When I open up previous versions of Illustrator files (i.e. CS5), why are all of my paths messed up. Every object is embedded in a Clipping Mask, paths are compounded and in most cases type on a path is expanded into multiple non-editable objects. This causes complete redesign.

Illustrator :: Width Tool And Clipping Masks

Mar 15, 2013

I'm working on a project that is going to have a lot of differing line weights. I outlined everything, and started using the width tool around the eye and noticed it scaled the width proportionately. The iris sits inside of a clipping mask because it would seem most efficient to be able to adjust the points later down the line if I need to. I would like to avoid having to have the iris, a clipping mask with no stroke, and then the stroke placed on top of everything. Is this possible?

Illustrator :: Why Clipping Masks Made During Place / Embed

Dec 3, 2012

Illustrator CS6 (all updates)

I have a simple, clean logo with a couple of compound paths (letters like the 'e', 'A').  There are no clipping paths.  Everything works great in that file if I save it, re-open and edit it, etc.

If I "Place" or drag this file into a brand new, blank file, and then "Embed" the artwork, it creates 2 clipping masks the size of the artboard.  More importantly, it messes up the compound paths so that I have to select them and use the 'Unite' shape mode to get it to function properly.  I can see this by trying to add a stroke to the letters.. the stroke is broken until I use the Unite button.  Even undoing the compound path and redoing it doesn't work.  In the attached image, you can see how a corner is broken , as well as how neither 'inside' nor 'outside' is available for the embedded version.

Illustrator :: How To Separate Compound Path Clipping Masks

Mar 23, 2014

I'm trying to create a clipping mask of a photograph using several separate shapes and then separate the final masked image/shapes.

I've made the shapes a compound path, and then applied a clipping mask (so far so good).

Now that I have my masked photo/shapes I want to separate the shapes so I can edit them individually and independent of one another.

Illustrator :: How To Create Clipping Masks With Shapes And Text

Jun 11, 2013

I am new to Illustrator and am currently attempting to learn it. I am creating a logo that has text and has a shape that goes through the text to make the text appear as if it has claw marks in it.

I have two layers. The layer with the shape "claw" marks, and a layer with the text. The shape layer is currently above and the text layer is currently below. If I select both layers and click on Make Clipping Mask it has the text displayed within the little claw marks, how do I reverse that? Because when I try to change the order of the layers it doesn't clip anything?

Illustrator :: Draw Inside - Clipping Masks And Live Paint

Jan 26, 2014

I made a drawing of a stone floor excavation and I used 'draw inside' to delimit the excavation borders as below:

and this is what it looks like with edit contents selected:

I also wanted to carry on drawing in 'Live paint' mode to 'colour in' sections (the above is just a small section of a much larger drawing), but because 'draw inside' creates a clipping mask, this object is now incompatible with the 'Live paint' paradigm! So I thought I would 'expand appearance' to continue and this is what I get:

My question is, is there a way for me to successfully translate a 'draw inside' object to a 'Live paint group'? The above objects are just simple shapes with a single fill & stroke.

Illustrator :: Clipping Masks - Filling Half Of Object With Pattern

Oct 29, 2012

I created a pattern in illustrator, and then I created an object, and I wanted to fill half of the object with the pattern, so I used a clipping mask to do this.. however, now when i try to group everything together, the clipping mask in released and the pattern spills all over the artbaord... when i try to copy and paste into a new document, everything is pasted as white instead. When i try to merge the layers, the clipping mask is released...

How to keep the clipping mask from releasing.. Also, I tried rasterizing but that doesn't work either and it makes my shapes all rough and choppy!

Illustrator :: Seamless Repeating Pattern - Using Embedded Images With Clipping Masks

Jun 25, 2013

We struggle a bit creating a seamless repeating pattern that includes embedded images with clipping masks applied.Our pattern is a 550x550mm black square with various embedded inserted on top. All of these images have Clipping Masks applied to hide unwanted areas.These images are placed so they create a seamless repeating pattern and this includes areas that overlap the square.Once we create a swatch from this pattern the repeatable area becomes too big as it includes the unwanted areas hidden by the clipping masks.Because the repeatable area is now too big it's actually not repeatable.

Pathfinder/crop to delete the unwanted areas in the images etc.We though of just live tracing the images, but due to the complexity this is not an option.Do we really have to do our "cutting" in Photoshop .

Photoshop Elements :: Layer Masks - Can't Get White Or Shown Masks To Be Taken Off With Black Brush

Sep 11, 2012

I am having trouble with using my layer masks. I can use the masks that are hidden (shown with black screen) and apply them with the white brush, but I cant get white or shown masks to be taken off with the black brush. Sometimes, not always I have trouble adjusting the opacity of white masks. I was playing around with actions I downloaded and after applying three actions to a photo, elements froze on me. I read about trashing preferences, I dont know what that does or means but I tried to hit cntrol alt shift when photoshop was opening and nothing happened. When it first opens it shows I can install the new inspiration browser ( i dont know what that is either) thinking it was a required update I tried to update and it gave me an error message, something about the installer has been mis-configured.

Lightroom :: Color Clipping Before Highlights Are Clipping

Sep 17, 2012

I have pretty strange behaviour on concert pictures I import from my D700. Usually I import with camera profile Vivid V4. The concert pictures have strong reds due to the flood lights.

My camera histogram shows a slight clipping of the reds (even though I underexpose 1-2 stops).

After import of the RAW files using Vivid V4, the histogram in Lightroom looks strange, and also the controls behave strange:

- a strong red spike in the histogram at about 1/5th away from clipping level (the picture in Lr shows blown out parts in red)

- hovering over different areas of the pictures and checking the percentage indicator underneath the histogram shows significant areas of 100 % red, even though there are still tonal differences in those areas

- moving exposure to the right: the histogram content left to the spike is shifting as expected, but the spike is growing and staying at 1/5th, nothing is appearing to the right of the spike (more areas in the picture are blown out)

- no other basic control can flatten out the spike, even not the highlight slider

- only the saturation control has some influence, and also with the tone curve I can fill the histogram, but picture is still looking blown out

The situation improves a lot by using Camera Neutral V4, the red is more spread out in the histogram, also beyond the 1/5th the highlight clipping level. Significant areas in the picture are still at 100 % but less blown out. Basic controls are behaving more normal, and it is possible to fill the histogram by increasing the exposure or other controls.

The question is.. is this unintended behaviour of Lightroom, or is is as good as we can get it with the strong red colors, and is it better not to use Vivid V4 in these cases?

Photoshop :: Masks In CS6

Jun 27, 2012

I was trying to learn from this video about masking.  It says it is CS5.

[URL]........

When I go to the layers there is no masks.  When I go to the windows, no masks. A post said that it was now under properties, but when I go there, it says no properties.

So I cannot even get started.  My idea was to take this image and replace the screening area with a green background, in a manner that I thought might work similar to the video. the quick mask selected the desired area well and then I could go no farther.

Photoshop :: Masks

May 18, 2005

Running Photoshop CS. I have two jpegs one of which I need to drag a section of the photo across to the other one. This is applied as a layer but I want to dissolve the outer edges of the picture into the underlying jpeg.

I've tried feathering but it doesn't give me the shape I need, as I'm limited to circular or rectangular shape. The rubber tool doesn't really gradient the edges away enough, even on maximum softness. I think I really need to use a mask but for some reason when I press Quick Mask and colour inthe edges then press Q it just leaves a marquee round the shape but doesn't remove the edge.

Photoshop :: Can't Paint On Masks?

Sep 5, 2012

I recently upgraded to CS6 (version 13.0.1 x64) on a Mac OS X 10.7.4, and my masks are acting wonky. When I add a mask to a layer and then use the brush tool (using black) to paint on the mask to remove the mask from a portion of my image, nothing happens. If I invert the mask so that it's all black and then paint on with a white brush, I can get the effect of the mask.

But then if I happen to use the brush on a part of the image that has already been painted (it is white on the mask), that part of the mask turns black even though I'm using a white-colored brush. Is there some sort of setting I need to change? What am I doing wrong?
