Illustrator :: Moving Individual Anchor Points And Not Whole Path
Oct 25, 2011I'm used to working with the pen tool in Adobe Photoshop, so Illustrator is just different enough to be problematic, since my automatic keyboard shortcut uses don't quite work. My biggest problem when drawing paths in Illustrator is that I can't figure out how to move individual anchor points without moving the entire connected path. I'm not using the direct selection right, or I don't have the rest of the path deselected properly, or something? How to move only individual anchor points in a path. (I am very tired of trying to move anchor points and ending up scooting the entire path along with it.)

Windows Vista (relevant only for keyboard shortcuts, I suppose)

Illustrator :: CS5 - Moving Anchor Points With Transform Panel Not Whole Object
Dec 18, 2013I'm trying to move specific anchor points on a path a few pixels up from their current position, while keeping everything else where it is, so it'll transform the figure's shape. I'm trying to do it precise by changing it's dimensions, rather than clicking and dragging. does- work when I direct select the points I want and drag them. Problems with that:
1) I have very little control. If I want the point moved up by whole pixels, I pretty much have to get lucky because it's always in decimal points.
2) With shapes bordering each other (parts of a complex shape), if I want to move their location to scrunch something (Half circle in a larger half circle, wanting to flatten out the base), if I lift those points up, they leave a gap. As if the top border of the outer circle has another anchor point under the lower of the one above that, and I can't click on it to move everything while they're still touching. I can take screenshots if needed. I'm following a tutorial to get used to the program.
Alternately, I suppose if you have a shortcut for constraining the drag to whole pixels instead of fractions, that's great too. In Photoshop and the like, holding Shift would give me precision, but that's not the case in this tool or perhaps program.
Illustrator :: Function To Add Median Anchor Between Two Anchor Points
Feb 12, 2014I'm just wondering if there's some function to add an anchor point on a path between (exactly in the middle) two anchor points. Like Object > Path > Add Anchor Points, except only between two selected anchor points.
I'm using Illustrator CC (17.1) on a Mac.

Aug 30, 2012I have a shape in illustrator CS6 that I'm trying to edit. When I try to click on a point with the Delete Anchor Point Tool nothing happens however I am able to select the point using the Direct Selection Tool and then remove it using the "Remove selected anchor points" option in the Control palette. Same issue with trying to use the Convert Anchor Point Tool.

I believe that I should be able to do this by holding the Control key down while using the Convert Point Tool. Sometimes this works just fine, and other times the whole selection moves when I try to move the anchor point.
What is the exact procedure for moving an anchor point? I am apparently missing a step so that this appears to sometimes work, and other times not.

Feb 4, 2013I was just working with the pen tool in Photoshop CS6, and unexplainable the anchor points changed from being circles to being squares. How I did it or how to reverse it. What with all the keyboard shortcuts it's possible that I accidentally hit the keystrokes to change it (as I have done it in the past), however I have been unable to find exactly why or how I made this change.

Sep 15, 2011How can I combine two anchor points which form part of a shape? I know I can drag a marquee around the two points with the direct selection tool. Then, according to the help file, an icon should appear which I can simply click to combine the two anchor points.
Basically my two anchor points sit on top of each other and I want to turn them into a single anchor point.

This is a useful timesaver for creating complex paths. While Photoshop CS6 has introduced some useful new path-editing features, this is one that is still missing.
I cant' figure out why Adobe does not make the pen tool identical between the two programs. This is an old feature in Illustrator. Don't the Adobe programmers talk to each other.

Jul 14, 2013In PS CS 6 it used to be possible to draw a shape, like a rectangle, and then use the direct selection tool to select and move one corne of the rectangle. However, in PS CC this does not work anymore. When I try to use the direct selection tool, all anchor points remain selected and so I can't move a single point, just all of them at once. What might I be doing wrong? Did something change in the CC version?!

Oct 9, 2012Trying CS6 for the first time and noticed that I'm having trouble aligning 2 anchor points in a vector shape. For some reason, no matter how much I zoom in, the anchor "snaps" where I don't want it to, which wouldn't be so bad if the anchor I'm trying to align with it snapped at the same place, but it doesn't.
I tried checking/unchecking "align edges" and "constrain path dragging", but neither has any effect on the problem.

I need the anchor points to snap to whatever I have my gridlines and subdivisions set to in preferences along with guides I place. When I make the initial anchor points, they snap, but moving them after that, they don't snap. I see the new snap vector to pixel grid, but for the majority of my projects, that will not be used.
I have snap check marked and snap to all selected. Never had this problem before CS6.

Aug 17, 2012I've been using the pen tool for almost a month now… I'm actually getting pretty good with it now, mainly using it to make my selections more precise… I haven't even bothered to try to draw with it, yet…
Anyway, I was already kind of sleepy when I started to outline the chopper with the pen tool… I got pretty tired & saved what I have done into a PSD. In Illustrator I know it would probably save my anchor points…
When I click on my Path palette, I can see some of my outline… But, the rest of it is filled in with white as a shape…With all of that said, in Photoshop… Is there anyway I can pick up where I left off tracing the nice Harley-Davidson?
Or… Do I have to start all over?
I already tried to use the Direct Path tool & Direct Selection Tool… My anchor points remain hidden.

Now, i want to move one of the end points up and have the anchor points after it follow the movement to keep the smooth line. I think Flash had a tool like this. It allowed you to manipulate one point that would affect the whole path depending on how extreme or what direction you went.

Apr 10, 2013I have a project that was started by leaving all the survey data inside the "All Points" group. So, I'm concerned that when I enter my as built survey points, that even if I put them into their own group, that the original surface will still look at them and just rebuild to my asbuilt data, effectively cancel out the purpose of the asbuilt survey. Will this happen?
I want to take the original points and put them into a group of their own, but I don't know if that will affect anything or not? I have several wetlands already designed on that surface with volume calcs already done too.
What should I do?

Illustrator :: CS5 - Cannot Join Two Overlapped Anchor Points

I need to copy and paste path segments in order to create uniform serifs for letters. (For example, specific path curves).
So imagine I have a horizontal segment and a curve segment. I mouseover each one seperately and I can see they have anchor points where I want them to merge afterwards. I drag one towards the other to make them intersect. Then I try to select both anchor points and press CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + J, but it displays this error: "To join, you must select two open endpoints. (...)" Which makes me think I'm not really selecting both anchor points when they're overlapped.
I have the idea that they can't overlap, because my path segment won't detect the anchor point in the other path. They're just visually intersected but not connected.
If I try to join them when they aren't overlapped, they will join but distort the original shape of the path segments. I select them both with the Direct Selection tool, pressing Shift to add the second anchor point to the selection, which won't work when they're overlapped because Shift + Clicking will deselect the anchor that seems on top.
I also tried various shape modes in pathfinder and nothing works.
How can I properly overlap and join / merge them?
(I'm using a white fill so I can see the shape forming as I add more anchor points so I'm sure they aren't joined).

Jan 31, 2013I want to move two opposite anchor points in opposite directions so that they are equally spaced. So if I have one anchor point I want to move right and the other left how can i make sure that they have equal spacing apart without having to resort to rulers. Is it possible to select both points and get them to move in opposite direction together?

I am trying to line up the anchors perfectly (one corner at time) and then do a join, yet the result is always slightly off. I've been selecting the two points I want to join and using Path -> Average, then Path -> Join to do this, yet as mentioned it's not coming out precise.
