Photoshop :: JPEG Quality VS Size
Dec 9, 2002I'm in the process of cropping 5000 family pictures. They were all scanned on a flatbed with about 4 pictures per scan. I've realized that the cropped pictures are much larger in size than their original counterparts.
For example 45 of the original scans are 27MB in size, while those same pictures cropped (157 of them) are 156MB in size.
My action automatically saves the images at the maximum JPEG quality of 12. I'm wondering what the lowest i can lower the quality to is, while preserving the original scan quality of 300DPI?

Oct 8, 2012I am myself a photoshop student and I wanna learn about graphic designs, currently Iam working to create pamphlets for an organization.maybe some of you know that for creating brochures you need to set 300 resolution of your image,So only and only high resolution images can be used for this, and we cant find high resolution images easily but that random images which we preserve are mostly workable so that images which Iam trying to use in my brochures are mostly 500/300 px or maximum I may find 800/600 px which is not enough, I at least need to have 1600/1200 px images for a pamphlet I know we mostly use IMAGE SIZE to enlarge the image but as much as we enlarge the image size, the quality becomes more poor that's what the problem is so I wanna know if there is any method of increasing size of the image without losing it's quality,

Feb 18, 2009I'm using Photoshop CS3 and I have a quick query regarding the difference in image quality between resizing an image using 'Image Size' compared to 'Free Transform'.
I'm laying out several individual photographs on to a page (with some precision) and therefore using the transform function to scale the image to the right size is certainly the quickest and easiest option.
However, I have always been keen to ensure maximum image quality and I don't know if this will degrade the image more than resizing the image using 'image size' before pasting it (obviously with a lot more effort involved).

Feb 5, 2013When reducing the size of an image layer, I am seeing very different quality between regular raster layers and smart object layers.
See this image for an example:
Both versions of the image were resized after duplicating the same source layer.
They were then resized to 20% of their original size.
In the top example, the layer was resized immediately after being duplicated.
In the bottom example the layer was converted to a smart object before resizing.
You will notice that the top version of the image has considerably more artifacting than the bottom.
The quality of the raster layer size reduction also seems to have degraded since CS5.
I am using the bicubic setting in Preferences > General > Image Interpolation.
Switching that option around has made very little difference.
Are others seeing the same phenomenon?
Photoshop :: Save For Web... 1 Quality Point - Big Jump In File Size
Dec 8, 2004when using the Save for Web... feature there is a place on the Quality slider where one point makes a disproportionately large jump in file size. It seems to me it is always at 50-51 but I'm not positive of that. Here are some results from a Save for Web...
47 = 226.7K
48 = 230.1K
49 = 236.2K
50 = 239.8K
51 = 298.2
52 = 300.5
etc.
I wonder why that sharp jump exists when files grow fairly proportionately above and below that 'break point." Needless to say I always keep an eye out for that issue when saving for web.

Apr 8, 2012I have a few images that are essentially line drawings (B&W) that I want to make larger for presentation (i.e., click for larger size) on our new Website. The current size is not large enough.
If I increase pixel sizes, the quality is terrible. For example, see:

Settings *jpg: Width - 270; Height - 138; Scale styles - Y; Constrain proportions - Y; Resample image - Bicubic
If I increase *jpg to Width - 450; Height - 230, I get UGLY.
When I Save for Web as *gif, I change Width - 450; Height - 230, it still appears fuzzy, although not as much.

Aug 18, 2013I've created a resume in Photoshop CS5 for OS X - I know, I should've used InDesign but I'm more comfortable working in Photoshop.
The PSD is currently 2550x3300 px (8.5x11 in) at 300 dpi. I'd like to save the resume as a PDF flie so I can submit it online. I have no intentions of printing this particular document. Most websites will only accept a file size of under 1MB. What are the ideal settings for saving a PDF in the smallest file size without sacrificing on image quality? I should also note that I do not have Acrobat Pro.

Feb 28, 2013I have many images of slides scanned at high res (4800 DPI, maximum pixels 5214x3592). Although I will be saving these as loss less TIFs, I also wish to make JPGs from them that I wish to be just less than 5 MB in file size. Aside from cropping, I know I can achieve such a reduction of JPG file size by a combination of saving to lower quality JPG compression or reducing image size. My question is, what is theoretically or practically better, achieving this mostly by reducing image total pixels or by reducing JPG compression quality.

Dec 11, 2013Got a Blueray player with a USB port so I don't need dvd's any more for my homemade videos. What settings & formats do I need to get my MPEG2 DVD files small and sharp like those movies downloaded off the internet? My videos have bitrates 8000 and smaller and 1.5 - 2.0 hr take up 4g. Those off the internet are 900 bit rate and are about 600-700 mb and are crystal clear. I've converted some 5000 bit rate files to MP4 H.264 (what my Blueray player uses) at 1000 & 1500 bit rate and they are still pretty large and not as clear as the originals. I could sure store a lot of videos @ 700 mb on a memory stick vs 1.5 or 2 gig files I've been able to convert to MP4's but don't want to loose quality especially if I want to delete the masters.

These videos are somewhere around 2 hours long. I would also like to have them still HD. The only way I have been slightly succesful is to upload them to youtube then download them off again. When the bith depth is selected as auto are there any chance that paint.net will loose quality ? I check that generally bith depth is not changing it is 32 bit but it is able to reduce size of image which have been yahoo smushed or pgnoutwin processed. How is this possible ?
Are there any plugin which will batch read images and save them if the new size is smaller without quality loss ?
Lightroom :: Export Original Photos In Low Quality (reduced Size From 12MB To 600KB)
Aug 20, 2013I accidentally exported original photos in low quality (reduced size from 12MB to 600KB), as I needed to quickly (herein lays my mistake) upload them to a proofing site which requires me to reduce the quality of the images significantly. I NEVER usually do anything without backing things up, or before making a copy etc. This time however, I was in a BIG rush to get these to a client and I not only exported the original files (even though I exported to a new folder, somehow, the originals got reduced as well without me noticing), but I also deleted them from my memory card (I tried card recovery software and no luck). What I'm left with now is a folder full of low quality, useless images and no (known) way of restoring them to the original high quality (12MB) state. Here are some other details:
Program: Lightroom 2
Computer: MacBook Pro
Camera: Nikon D7100
(I only post this as I used my camera to delete the images off the memory cards...not sure if there is a way to recover via camera?)
Images no longer show in preview (yes, I deleted them from there too!)I did not back-up I tried scanning my hard-drive, memory card and external drive with recovery software (no luck)the images were on 2 memory cards and, as mentioned, I deleted them using my camera (when I ran the recovery software, only images that I originally deleted via my computer came up - which were the "did not make the cut" photos from the shoot that I deleted in Bridge - the rest of the photos, which are the ones I need, are not coming up in the scan)These images were to be used as posters, so high quality is crucial. There is nothing in my trash can eitherI tried using a preview extraction plug-in, but as there are no previews (duh Sanja), the plug in proved useless I think that's all the info I can provide (maybe it's too much info as is)...

Nov 30, 2008I'm pretty new to photoshop, and I've started on a personal project. I want to basically take a video still from a music video and turn it into a poster. Sadly i can not find a good quality version of the video as it is older and not super famous, (kyuss-one inch man). So i found an online video that is better then youtube but not great, and i captured it through the vista snipping tool (screen capture).
Basically I want to take this low quality picture, and turn it into a good quality poster (not huge). What techniques and things must I do? I'll probably have to find a printer near here and require a specific dpi as well.

My question is how to maintain high quality (original quality) of a image after resizing it?
If i resize it with same ratio like:
2816x2112px to 1600x1200px (4:3)
2816x1584px to 1920x1080px (16:9)
Mainly i use scale image option in Gimp. But now i need to resize many images for my work so i tried David's Batch Processor to resize my images. After using it, i found there is some quality promble with the resized image.
Then i tried, the scale option with, use quality setting from original image and JPEG quality parameter is 95, in gimp but the problem is same. I did it with also with David's batch processor- JPEG quality parameter is 95.
Other thing is that, the original image 2816x2112px (4:3), size- 3.6 MB is displaying in image viewer with 47% and the resized image 1600x1200px (4:3). size- 1.2 MB is displaying in image viewer with 83%, So my questions are: How can i check the quality of a image after resizing it, means the image is exactly same as the original? Or Is David's Batch Processor maintain the original quality of the images after resizing?. I realy need to resize many images for my work.

For example, if I had typed in 'hello', the size of the shape should be just big enough for the text to fit inside, without me having to change anything. On the other hand, if I typed in 'good morning', would I be able to make it so the size of the shape would change for the text to fit without having to use the transform tool?
I'm trying to make annotations for a video, and it would be annoying to have to transform to the correct measurements every single time.
