Photoshop :: CS4 Running Extremely Slow Compared To...
Oct 19, 2008
I installed Photoshop Extended CS4 64bit. I opened a 24mb PSD file, there is some text with some outer glow when I move it I get redraw. CS4 just feels sluggish compared to CS3. My system is not that bad, e6600, 4GB, 8800GTS 640, Vista Home Premium x64.
I have updated to the latest drivers for my GPU. I am considering just a reformat and install.

Same system... CS6 runs perfectly fine, close it, then load CC, not even workable. Close CC and reload CS6 and it runs fine...
Is CC really that much more hardware dependent? I feel like the issue is software related and has nothing to do with my machine... My Machine isn't some kind of powerhouse, but it does have 8gb of ram, and again, no real issues with CS6...

I'm working with a 2.73G PSB file that will be printed in a large format printer and eventually end up as a vinyl wrap for a cargo trailer. I've never worked with a Photoshop document this large but from what I've read, PSB's can be up to 4G.
When I open the file, photoshop goes through the trouble of loading the file (the progress bar loads all the way) but when it trys to actually open the document, I get a message from Windows that the program has encountered a problem and has to be closed. At an early stage of working on the document, when the file was less intense with layers and blending modes, the file would open but crash when saving.
The funny thing is that my co-worker runs a MAC with lower specs than mine and the file opens and seems to run stably. I'm thinking it could be a RAM issue but according to CC spec's my machine should work fine?
On my machine, I'm running:
Windows 7 - Service Pack1
Intel Core i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz 1.60
8.00 GB (2.98 GB usable)
32 Bit
I've also read that to access your full RAM's capability you have to be running 64 bit but I'm not sure about this?

So, I purchased CS6 when it was released and have been dealing with it's ridiculous speed ever since. It's gotten to the point where I can't tolerate it and can get no work done inside of it.
Basically, the main issue is the menu bar. I'll click on File or Image and have to wait at least 5 seconds for the menu to drop down. In the layer pallette I'll go to Alt Drag a layer and it'll freeze for a good 5-10 seconds, then reset and let me drag at will. Until I want to do another layer...then it does it all over again. Brushing occasionally becomes painfully slow and delayed. I used CS4 for years and never had these problems on the same computer. I work with extremely large files and am only having trouble with them after upgrading to CS6.
I'm running on Vista, yes I know. 6GB of Ram, so that should not be the issue. I do plan on purchasing a Mac in the next few months, but really need this problem sorted out Asap. I've googled endlessly and cannot find anything that works. I've changed drawing mode to Basic, disabled OpenGL, seemingly all of the obvious fixes, that haven't worked.

I use the hand tool to "slide" and image under CS3, the image movement is very smooth and without a glitch. If I use the same hand tool under CS4, the image movement is jumpy and erratic. There does not seem to be any "use hardware acceleration" option as is available in bridge.
I find this makes it rather difficult to move the image quickly and smoothly while I edit a large image looking for flaws (for example, dust spots on scanned negatives).

I have just upgraded from X3 to X5. In X3 when I would type some text I would then scroll through the different fonts and see which one I wanted to use. This was really quick. I simply cursored down through the list. X5 is very slow in changing from one font to the next. I'm having to match and select fonts in X3 and then paste them into X5 and continue my artwork.

I use actions for my photograpy images. I use CS6 PS and LR3 side by side and it continuously freeze my brand new mac and also did the same to my old PC.
A computer annaylist friend said it may be the way i use PS - I cant see that to be honest as all I do is open the raw image - run an action and then save it back to LR. But then saying that after speaking with other photog friends - they tell me they dont have a problem when they do the same.

I own a copy of Photoshop CS6.Switching from Photoshop CS to CS6, I have found this version to be extremely slow and I can not find a reason why it is like this. It is impossible for me to work on it.
Problem: Slow performance, when using the brush tool there is a long delay - lag. The brush takes more than 8 seconds to catch up with my strokes.
Software:Adobe Photoshop CS6 x64OS:Windows 7 x64 SP1CPU:AMD Phenom II X4 965 BEGPU:Radeon 6790 OC @ 920MhzRAM:A-Data DDR3 1333Mhz CAS9 4GB (x2)SSD:A-Data 510 128GB SATA3HDD:Samsung SATA 1TB
Tried:
- Memory usage allowed upgraded to 6GB, nothing changed.
- Default selected "Scratch Disk" is the main SSD which has over 58GB of free space, I've tried selecting the secondary HDD as well but nothing changes.
- Disabled the "Use Graphic Processor" square. nothing changed.
- Disabled the "Use open CL" square in advanced Graphic Processor Settings. Nothing changed.
- Changed power management settings in windows to "High Performance". nothing changed.
- Disabling tablet pc service doesn't work.
Notes:
- Graphic drivers are the latest release on AMD website
- Windows is completely updated
- SSD Firmware is the latest available.
- The issue happens both with mouse and tablet.
- 1px brush and 5000px brush lag just alike in zoomed and not zoomed canvas.
- This happens on both x64 and x86 versions of the software.

I've been using 3DS Max 2013 on a Win7 PC and my current project has some extremely heavy scene files. I know about layers, meshsmooth render iterations, and all the basic techniques, but despite all that, Max's viewport has always ran extremely slow. recently my boss gave me a new (extremely more powerful) PC, only thing is, it runs Max the same, if not worse, and I don't know what to tell him.
By all means this is a much faster and more powerful PC but it runs 3DS Max horribly.

I'm using PS CS6 13.0.5 x64 on Snow Leopard (iMac 27" late 2012). I tried to change the text engine to Middle Eastern, but after I restart PS, the program is nearly non-responsive, and it takes forever to edit text. Changing it back to East Asian solves the problem, but then again, I want to use the Middle Eastern feature...
When I use Illustrator CS6 I don't have such problems (although I have to write backwards, since there is no support for right-to-left in Illustrator in my version)

It's a Q6700, 4GB, 2TB drives, Epson R2880 running Windows 7, 64-bit. CS4 is very peppy, runs great, opens, closes, edits, NO PROBLEM.
UNTIL you decide to print. Once you hit the print selection it takes a MINIMUM of 40 seconds for the CS4 print dialog to appear. If you then hit the "page setup" button, it'll be at LEAST another 30 seconds before that appears. Once they're up, you can navigate around and make changes, but once you hit the print button on the dialog it'll be another 10-15 seconds before it responds and if you specify "Print Preview" it'll be at least another 30 seconds before you get the preview. Once it hits the printer, it prints fine. There haven't been any software or hardware changes in weeks, except the weekly MS updates that get installed.
I've tried large images, and small images in case there was something CS4 was doing. This process is this slow when printing a 4x6 greeting card or a 12 x 18 photograph.
What's interesting is this is a new phenomenon... It worked FINE up until sometime last week. Then suddenly, slow....... Concurrently, the print dialog STOPPED DISPLAYING INK LEVELS. The status monitor still displays them, but the printer dialog no longer does.
I've unloaded the printer and cleaned off every file I could find that appeared to be associated with an Epson print driver. Went to Epson and got the latest, Windows 7, 64-bit set of drivers and status monitor and installed that. No difference. Also tried a new USB cable AND switched it to the other USB port on the printer and on the PC. Nothing's made any difference......
If necessary, I can have her re-install CS4, but is there anything that should be done before we start clobbering major applications, or ever worse, the operating system?

1. Updating previews (100%) is very slow.
Bridge CS6 has problems updating the previews of images that get edited. While creating preview from scratch is rather swift, updating previews takes about six minutes on a MacBook Pro retina with 16Gb RAM.After one minute the preview gets updated, but then the busy signal in the low left corner just keeps turning and turning for five more minutes. Why is this happening? Is Bridge still busy with those previews? Why? The preview has already been updated, why those extra five minutes of business?
2. Image deleting is painfully slow.
You type Command + Delete, and nothing is happening for five, six seconds.Only then the images get deleted. Has noticed these two hold-ups?
I just went back after writing and editing this post, and Bridge is still busy with the preview update. This is now 15 minutes after the image had been edited. The busy signal in the lower left corner just never turns off again.
It feels like Bridge has also problems working in the background. As soon as you open e.g. a browser to bridge the waiting for bridge, Bridge seems to keep the busy signal rotating, but not actually doing anything until you close the browser again. Which is why I just had a 15 minute wait for an image preview to finally update. The time spent in the browser did not "count".

Ok, so I have been using Gimp for around a year now, I love it! Have never had any problems... until now. Ramdomly enough it has decided to stop working for me. On start up it takes alot longer than usual... 20 - 30 mins longer than usual! The start up splash screen freezes, along with the rest of my desktop. I always run it with nothing else running so I don't think there's anything conflicting there.
My windows updates are fully up to date, along with drivers etc. This really frustrates me because as I said, I have been running Gimp for almost a year without a single glitch.
I have also tried uninstall/reinstall, tried running the older build. If I do by some miracle get it to run, its extremely slow, freezes during simple tasks. Specs below -

I just started testing the new premiere CC as a replacement for the Pro5.5.
Most of my clips are AVCHD from the dreadful Panasonic 130 / 160 cams.
Although the new premiere works well as far as handling these clips (surely better then CS6 with the BUG) , when I try to export to mpg2 DVD … well …. Trees grow faster.
For some reason the premiere cs5.5 does it faster, way faster than the CC. The CUDA engine is active in both cases, but has no visible effect on speed. The computer I am using has the I7 6 cores dual threads, 32 GB memory, SSD for system disk and GTX570 for GPU

I recently upgraded from ACAD 2004 to ACAD 2012. In ACAD 2004, plotting was extremely quick. In ACAD 2012, plotting seems to be extremely slow. A basic drawing in 2004 plotted as a pdf file using CUTE PDF or PDF Creator would take about 5-10 seconds. In ACAD 2012, a similar file using the same CUTE PDF or PDF Creator will take up to 2-3 minutes. Not a long time but when you are plotting a dwg set that has up to 10 tabs in it, it takes 20-30 minutes just to plot. Is there any way to speed up the plotting in ACAD 2012? I have both ACAD 2004 and ACAD 2012 loaded on the same computer.

My VS12 on Windows 7/64 machine with 4G RAM has slowed down dramatically when I have lots of clips in the libraries. I have several libraries based on themes, each with about 10-20 clips of 10-20sec duration (PAL MPEG2 clips, no HD). Loading into the libraries from the external USB2 hard drive is extremely slow. With each clip to load VS12 gets stuck for a while and until all clips are loaded it takes a long time) And when you want to move the scroll bar in the library it does not move, you have to click several times and the mouse just shows the blue ring for a long time and you get Windows to react that VS12 does not respond. When I try to enter a new library it will only show after I click "Close" several times and with a long wait.
When I delete most of the libraries VS12 runs a bit quicker.
All other programs (for instance Firefox and mail) run well and with normal speed (normally I have them closed when using VS12). So it clearly seems to be in VS12. I used VS12 the last time in June to edit a video and at that time it worked well, with normal user friendly speed. Since then I only updated all Windows, Adobe, Quicktime and other important program updates, but nothing else. Also Direct X is updated to the latest version Microsoft issued in June 2010.
I experience the same situation both on my Windows 7 and Windows XP machine (XP having less process power and less RAM, only 2G, but worked perfectly before). Somehow the impression is that the latest Microsoft NET Framework patch could have caused this, but I am not sure and I would not like to deinstall this patch because of the security risks.

EG, add a revision row, delete a symbol, zoom in or out, pan, add a dimension, move a leader etc.for each command/move takes 10 to 30 seconds to get control, it took me 45 minutes, to add a revision row and print 15 drawings this morning.

However, if I chose to backup my catalog on exit from inside lightroom it takes over 30 minutes (not counting testing etc). I'm using LR 4.3 on Windows 7, 64-bit. It seems to work pretty well in Library and Develop and such, so I don't think there's a performance issue...
When I do a synchronize on a folder (may be 500 files or as few as 20), new files don't show up to be imported. I can look at the folder and SEE the file. It's there. But, it's NOT in the library grid. Synchronize does NOT see the file. If I do an import (separate from Synchronize), the file usually shows up. The file I can't see in the library shows up in the list with a checkmark, so it KNOWS it's not been imported. At that point, I can go ahead and tell LR to add them and it's fine.
ALSO, when I add a keyword to a new file, it doesn't show up when I open the files for that keyword. For example, I take a .dng file edit it, then finish in Photoshop. Saving the file in Photoshop gets it back to LR. I can see it in the files in Develop. I can see it in the Library grid. But it ISN'T in the keyword set. Even if I ADD the keyword AGAIN, it STILL doesn't show up in the files for that keyword. If I shut down Lightroom and restart it, THEN the file shows up in the keyword set. Is there some "auto-update" setting I've messed up?

I have an extruded sketch pattern that I have tried to make modification to via the 'edit pattern' function. When making ajustments to the pattern and clicking ok Inventor is taking nigh on 2 hours to complete the function. Then I have to finish sketch which takes another hour or so. Obviously it should not be taking this amount of time. The part in question is a series of extruded holes, nothing excessivly complex, why this is taking so much time to complete ? I have yet another very unique issue that has not been mentioned anywhere else that I would like to bring to the discussion table. We have a very large project that involves several different areas of design. Each building has it's own set of cables that need to be pulled to the location so we have quite the extensive lists of cable schedule. All of this information is in a single Excel file which is datalinked into separate drawings. Every building has its own datalink.
For the sake of flexibility, we needed to centralize all the data into one excel file. We then use a macro to split up all the data by building. Each building is copied to its own worksheet (tab) in Excel. AutoCAD then datalinks to that worksheet using the option of "Use whole Worksheet" in the Datalink definitionDid I mention there are over 80 buildings? That means an Excel file with over 80 tabs.
So for every building package in AutoCAD, there is a separate drawing just for cable schedules which includes a table style that uses the datalink to this excel file. We replicate quickly by coping/pasting a template file, open it and go to datalink manager, and modify the datalink by changing the tab name in the drop down menu. Since we're linking the entire sheet, it's extremely convenient.
After adding in a lot of worksheets, AutoCAD takes about 10 minutes to open the Datalink Manager Editor to change the link from one tab name to another. I've tried getting rid of all but two tabs in the excel file (the current target and the one I want to change it to), but to no success. There is a direct correlation between the quantity of worksheets and the speed of getting the Datalink Editor open, but we're talking between 10-30 minutes. The excel file is only 1.3 MB. Any insight with the inner workings of the datalink manager?
I should also mention that just updating an existing datalink is not all that painful. It's usually about 5 seconds to bring in a full table's worth of data from the same excel file with ALL the tabs.

I don't have any particular speed issue with illustrator CS6 in general. However there is a massive speed problem when I'm trying to select on object on the artboard with a single click.
When selecting a object by creating a "rectangle" over the object it works fine and normal speed. When clicking the object to select it, nothing happens for about 3/4 seconds, then the loading little rainbow circle appears and loads for another 3/4 seconds...

I have a mech/mfg-necessary pattern set on several parts, to the tune of about 90 slots and 500 holes each. Inventor is absolutely sucking it up handling these parts, and the assembly of these parts together is just a complete nightmare.
I have half-hour load times, constant crashes, and to top it off, they're iparts (used in an iassembly), which means I am constantly having to regenerate the whole part family with every change, a process that can take literally hours.
Are there substitute tricks, or display setting shenanigans I can pull? All of the features are individually needed somewhere, but no mgf machine needs all of them present at once.
