Lightroom :: Reducing D800 RAW Files Without Degrading Quality For Prints
Oct 31, 2013
When I shoot portraits, I like shooting in RAW with my Nikon D800. One of my favorite print labs is requesting that I reduce the size of the massive files that the D800 produces to an sRGB jpg and a size that is more suitable for 16x20s, 8x10s, and 5x7s since those are the sizes I usually sell. Because I use Lightroom (v. 5.2) 90% of the time to develop and export images, what can I do to correctly reduce the massive file sizes without fearing a reduction in image quality? I remember Scott Kelby saying in one of his publication (I can't remember which one) that it can be done with an image quality reduction for printing purposes. Do I reduce the Quality slider in LR, and if so, to what percentage without having any degradation of quality in the lab's prints? Should I reduce the image sizing and resolution, and if so, to what without losing quality for the print sizes I intend to sell?
When I import anything into Premiere, the audio quality gets noticably muffled. I have tried exporting at the highest quality settings, but I don't think that's the problem becuase it sounds muffled in the playback in Premiere itself.
Lightroom will not read Nikon D800 NEF files. I have updated lightroom twice, first to 4.1 and second to 4.2 and in neither case would the files import. I have read several forum entries that say these files are compatible with Lightroom and/or to update Lightroom.
I try to import my d800 nef files and Lightroom does not recognize them and will not import. I looked on the site and it SAYS it supports them but nothing. I looked for a raw plugin but when I clicked the link it would not go anywhere. I don't want to shoot my wedding with this camera if LR can't support it and I have to return it to the camera store FAST if not.
I am evaluating Lightroom 5.3. I want to import files from a Nikon D800. I was able to import photos directly from the camera memory card, however I have not been able to import photos that I previously transfered from the memory card to my hard drive using Nikon Transfer 1.0 program. Is there a way to get these files to import into Lightroom?
I initially had the issue with Photoshop CS5 not being able to recognize RAW files from my Nikon D800. I managed to sort-it-out by installing the RAW Plug in 6.7 hence now CS5 opens up the RAW files from D800.
However, now I'm faced with the different issue. I see a significant drop of image quality when RAW s are opened in CS5. The images looking stunning with in D800 display screen looks very dull and flat when opened in CS5. No where close to the brilliant colors shown in the D800 preview.
I'm trying to set up tethered shooting with my D800. Following the steps to initiate tethered capture per Adobe, the camera is recognized, the camera settings are updated in LR when changed at the camera, and the LR shutter release functions properly. Only the files never transfer to LR. LR indicates that the "Files are Transferring from Camera" but they never do. Here's some additional information.
Macbook Pro v 10.8.5 Lightroom 5.3 up to date. D800 firmware up to date.
I've gone through all the steps on the Adobe troubleshooting page. I've tried this with a CF card installed and no card installed. This setup works perfectly with Image Capture on the Mac.
I cannot open Nikon D800 RAW image files in lightoom 2. My raw files will not import into lightroom (it imports jpegs, but not the RAW files) I am using Lightroom 2, version 2.7, camera Raw 5.7.
I've been trying to figure this out for over a week since I got my D800 and am not making any progress. I am using LightRoom 4.1 and Adobe Camera Raw 7.1 on a Mac OS X v10.6.8.
I read that I need ACR 6.7 in order to recognize the D800 NEF files, but I don't know how to remove 7.1. I tried deleting ACR from my .library folder and reinstalling 6.7 but it still says it's 7.1 when I open up LR4.1 again. Also, I only have Photoshop CS5 and I read that 7.1 supports the D800 NEF files in CS6 only.
On a probably unrelated note, I bought the educational version of LR4 and when I go back to my email that contained the download link, it shows a blank page on "My Orders" even though I've purchased this and other educational versions from Adobe in the last few years. I got the LR4.1 download file and reinstalled after removing the release candidate I was checking out, but wasn't prompted for my registration code that was in my purchase email.
Camera Raw import filter for Nikon D800 NEF files in LR 3.6? I believe LR 4.1 supports this file type natively, but I am not yet ready to update to 4.1.
I can, however read these files in Adobe P-Shop CS5 and Bridge CS5.
Tips on reducing my JPG images in PSP X4 without loosing too much quality. I know that it isn't possible to not lose some picture quality but if you have any pointers that would be fantastic.
I am converting my proprietary RAW files on my hardrive and LR4 catalogue to DNG files for the main reason of gaining extra space on my hard drive. I have ticked the 'delete original files after successful conversion' and they no longer appear on my hard drive, only the DNG files do but the space remaining on my hard drive is shrinking? Why is my drive not reading the extra space that should be now available?
I need to make some high quality prints from photoshop files. what is the best way to do this. I have tried the best quality my printer will do on high grade photo paper, but it's just an ink jet, so the quality still isn't as good as I need it to be. I have seen prints that look like crystal clear photos,
I have been shooting RAW for a while and have notice that after I import the images and then start to view them in the Library Module I will see a slight color and quality shift - almost looks like a white balance shift but not quite. I was thinking that perhaps there was some automatic preset being applied but I don't have any presets at all.
I am shooting with a Canon 1DX as well as 7D. I have not checked to see if I get this situation with the 7D, but I know for sure that I get it with the 1DX.
Today I was reviewing some images in Bridge and decided to open one of them in Camera RAW. At that time I discovered that the camera's Image Style Settings were available, Faithful, Standard, Portrait, etc. I noticed that the images did not have one of the camera styles applied to them but rather the Adobe Standard Style. At that point from within RAW I selected one of the camera's styles and bingo thats the kind of shift I am seeing when I first view an image in LR4 Library.
So as far as I can tell the RAW images are getting the Adobe Standard style applied in LR. I have no idea if this is a default behavior of if I have done something to cause it. I'm also thinking that perhaps LR does not necessarily apply the Camera's Styles automatically even though the particular style has been set in the camera -- perhaps is not imported as part of the metadata during the import and thus defaults to the Adobe Standard.
1. Should I expect LR4 to apply the Style as set from the camera automatically or not at all? 2. Can I prevent LR from applying the Adobe Standard Style and apply no style? 3. Can I cause LR to apply the Style as set in the camera for the particular image to be appied automatically upon import?
I have just purchased CS6 and been using it fine with my RAW files from my D700. I have just purchased a D800 and it will not open the files. The version says it is V7 which is supposed to work? I have tried using the updater and it keeps coming back with a message saying the sever is offline?
I have just installed the CS6 upgrade to Photoshop CS4 Extended, but now the software will not read the RAW files from my D800.
I have followed Adobe's instructions to check that I have the correct RAW plug-in (7.0.0.308) which I have. I have uninstalled the software and reinstalled the software without success. I do not want to convert my RAW files into DNG files, so I have ignored that step.
The 'Open in Photoshop' instruction in Lightroom 4 does not open my D800 RAW files either, although the files can be opened in Lightroom 4 OK.
Fault: Jobs do not complete but exit after second RAW file is read.
System: 2010 MacBookPro - Snow Leopard
Reproduceability: Intermittent - jobs tend to complete when Photoshop is launched but fail thereafter. Similar, inconsistent, behaviour when launched from Mini Bridge or within Photoshop
Seen elsewhere: NO! Same version of software on same OS works without fault on 2009 MacPro
Problem first observed: After switching from a D300 to a D800
Problem sources eliminated: Graphics Card
Other: Some reports of Ruler units being an issue - this was also eliminated as an issue. More system resources have been given to Photoshop in Preferences, without any measurable impact.
