AutoCad 2D :: Scale Metric DXF File To Imperial
Jun 20, 2013
I'm working on a project for work where we were given DXF files for a drawing. So I attached this file into AutoCAD at a scale factor of 1. The drawing was originally drawn in metric at 1:200. However, I am working in an imperial file with many other drawings in it as well. How can I scale this drawing up to the right scale in imperial in model space?

I'm new to autocad and came from Metric system country. now I have hard time switching to Imperial system.
1- is there any comparative scale factor between metric and imperial? for instance 1:20, 1:50, 1:250 and so on, compare to what in imperial?.
2 - in the unit dialogue box, if i use metric i only can choose Decimal not any other options like Architectural , engineering..etc. right?
3- if I want to draw in cm or m not millimeter I mean input my distance in cm or m while drawing how to do it?
4- if I want to open a metric drawing in a imperial model space how to switch from M to inch.

I have created a project in a metric template, then found that the scale factor is haywire. Is there some way to rest the template with out loosing my work or changing anything other than the physical line properties?
Second, I have loaded the same file onto another students file who's scale factor is A OK and metric. My file LOOKS fine but when i start to add lines or dimension all the properties are imperial.

Is there a way to modify the DEFAULT SCALE LIST to show a metric scale list in an imperial template? I mean, I start a drawing using the imperial template, but i want to use the standard metric scales on paper space. on previous versions the scale list shown both imperial & metric. Now it depends of what the template is using.

To convert from imperial to metric multiply the length, in inches, by 25.4 (the number of millimeters per inch).
Example: 3 inches converted to millimeters is 3*25.4 or 76.2mm.
To convert from metric to imperial multiply the length, in millimeters, by 0.03937 (the number of inches in a millimeter). For greater accuracy use 0.03937008.
Example: 100 millimeters converted to inches is 100*0.03937 or 3.937 inches.

I have one problem like conversion in this project involving things are converting total imperial dimensions in to metric while converting all the dimensions required in single precision like 15/16'' as .9375 mm but he need approximate value like 1 . I have large assembly how to maintain over all dimensions and how to change internal dimensions in simple ways.

When in a drawing how do you switch between Imperial and Metric. It seems like it would be such a simple process? When I try to go to Options > User Preferences > Scale List Edit and change it, I then hit apply get back into options and it is switched back to Imperial ? I am basically trying to get this scale list format 1:10, 1:20, etc. instead of 1/4"=1'0", 1/2"=1'-0", etc.

I have been working on a drawing for a client in the Metric template, everything displayed in metric, measures in metric, etc. Then this morning when I opened the file, the measurements have switched to imperial. The profile is still the metric one, and when I enter a value for a line length it is clearly using metric because it goes where I expect it to go, however the numbers displayed onscreen are in imperial. Is there an easy way to get this to switch back to displaying in Imperial?

I just spent a bunch of hours creating custom line types using imperial measurements which is the format we use most often with our drawings. Once in awhile we do work in metric and I am wondering if I need to redo the entire line type .lin file using metric values.

We have some machines which seem to work in imperial maesurement a dn others which work in metric. it is frustrating when trying to insert a map block that is metric and is inserting into a drawing which is set up as imperial. We have tried using the - dwgunits to change to mm, and then using insunits , insunitsdef source and insunitsdeftarget to 0, this works when the PC is currentyl in use. when shut down and restarted it reverts back to imperial setting.
Am i right in thinking this is something that needs to be done at the software installation stage to make it default to metric everytime?

I need to update metric numbers on a older CAD file to imperial numbers. Right now it is all single line text. Any way to easily convert single line text to some format that could then be converted from metric to imperial? I have stationing, pipe sizes (in milimeter), inverts, etc.

Wondering if there's a way to enter imperial units in command line of a metric drawin and have it convert imperial to metric.
IE. I'm constantly taking field site dimensions in imperial and it'd be useful if i didn't have to do conversion every time.

I'm trying to determine what my base units are in any drawing that i'm in (In modelspace). Essentially i want to either just read out the current base unit, or simply determine metric or imperial...or even both. I've been browsing through the forums and i've found a few examples, but nothing too detailed. Here is what i have so far, i have a feeling i'm on the write track. Is it possible to read out the value of "PlotPaperUnits"?

public class UNITS {
[Autodesk.AutoCAD.Runtime.CommandMethod("UNITS")]
public void UNITSCOMMAND() {
Document doc = Autodesk.AutoCAD.ApplicationServices.Application.DocumentManager.MdiActiveDocument;

I'm setting up some Civil 3D Metric dwt's & we work in Imperial units and have all of our dwt's set up for Imperial units. I'm looking for best practice tips on how to approach this task? Ideally I'd like to use what we have and not re-invent the wheel if that's possible & just convert the needed settings from Imperial to Metric.
After some experimenting it seems merely changing the "Edit Drawing Settings" Drawing Units, Ambient Settings and ddunits etc. this only gets a portion of the unit settings switched throughout the dwt.
I'm unable to switch the "Default Scale List" under Options>User Preferences>Default Scale List from Imperial to Metric as it keeps reverting to Imperial.
Additionally as I view the contents of the "Label Style Composer" of random C3d Label Styles I see inches as a unit etc. (Is there a way to globally convert these style unit settings to Metric)?
Something that seems like it should be fairly straight forward is proving to be anything but...

I need to convert a large number of drawings from Imperial to Metric (I have copied that drawings and intend to save as a metric set, so I'll be overwriting (and possible appending "-METRIC" to the file name.) So I wrote a batch file to collect the drawings then apply a conversion (autocad) script.
I also created a script to close the drawings that would run after a batch (i.e. subdirectory (say 20 drwgs)).
If I open the drawings manually and run the scripts, they work fine, however I have been unable to automate the procedure.
Batch to collect files:
SET ACAD2013PATH="C:Program FilesAutodeskAutoCAD 2013"
FOR /R c:ACADCrosby-Converted_to_Metric est %%f in (*.dwg) do start /wait %ACAD2013PATH%acad.exe%%f /b c:ACADscale-imperial-to-metric.scr
start /wait %ACAD2013PATH%acad.exe c:ACADCloseACAD.scr

I am using 2012 and i would like to enter my dimensions in imperial into a metric drawing with autocad doing an automatic conversion. So let's say i write this:
12'-8-1/2"
Autocad has to take it like that into the metric drawing then, he has to convert this to 3873.5 mm. Is there a code i can put into some autocad file to make this software work like that?

I have the drawing I'm working on, who's scale is set to "unitless". I'm attempting to insert a series of attributed blocks (containing titleblock information) into the paperspace of my drawing. The attributed block is also set to unitless.
Two of these blocks require editing to suite the drawing, the other two are to be edited at a later date by a third party.
Everything HAD been working fine, however, it appears the wheels have fallen off ~ I'm now experiencing a periodic error where, I insert a block to the 0,0 at a scale of 1 (as per procedure) but the block comes in at a fraction of the correct scale. I have to scale the block up by 25.4. (The imperial / metric conversion.) (Note, I'm working in Metric)
Even stranger - its not happening on all blocks. Just the two that have to be edited "in house".
I've checked measureinit within the blocks and it is set to metric. I'm limited in my ability to purge / audit the drawings as they don't want template information deleted from the drawing - but I don't know what other system variables i should be looking at.
I'm using CivilCad 2012 with Windows 7,

There wasn't a metric template so I created one. I've also been working on setting up Annotative and Dynamic Blocks. Mostly we work in Imperial and so the blocks were drawn in Imperial units.
When I insert some of my Annotative Blocks (Section marks and Labels, etc.), some insert scaled up 25.4 (which is what I want) and others don't.
Take the attached examples:
SOIL-Gravel.dwg is not Annotative. Insunits is set to 1
NOTE-title.dwg is Annotative. Insunits is set to 1.
I notice on my Insert Dialog Box that the Block Unit Factor changes from 25.4 (SOIL) to 1
(NOTE).
For some reason NOTE-Section Cut (Annotative) inserts at 25.4, but the Dynamic Parameters fail to scale up.
I've played around with INSUNITSDEFSOURCE and INSUNITSDEFTARGET, but neither seem to change. I understand they only work if INSUNITS of the block is 0. Which I have also toggled.

ilogic for converting dimensions imperial to metric form in sketch, part and assembly level
I have one task in this total models(parts and assemblies) having imperial dimensions but customer wants total dimensions in metric form with rounded value.
mean while all the dimensions directly convert to metric form dimensions are having many decimal places but customer wants ronded value like for example <1.5 is 2 and >1.5 is 1 like this. one more example is 2.56 is 3 and 2.46 is 2 like this.

I received a .dwg file from S. Korea with dimensions and units all in the metric mm and I need the units to be in feet and inches. Is there a command to switch dimensions and units to imperial feet and inches?
Rather than changing units in command UNITS Inches and Architectural, and SCALE 25.4, is there any other way to switch metric to imperial systems. Scaling somewhat does the trick but, provided dimensions remain in mm.

I would like a few rules to be triggered once the new drawing template is opened.select sheet size, I have been given a rule that already works, basically the rule selects a border and title block based on sheet size selection.
trigger = iTrigger0iLogicForm.Show("BorderChange", FormMode.Modal)iLogicVb.UpdateWhenDone = TrueIf Parameter("BorderSize") = "A0" Then ActiveSheet.ChangeSize("A0", MoveBorderItems := True)ActiveSheet.TitleBlock = "MJTD A0"ActiveSheet.Border = "MJTD A0.
[code]....
I would also like a rule to let me annotate in metric or imperial. this is where I require assistance. I am not sure the best way to achieve this rule. My programming is very basic.I have found some links here, but I can't seem to make them work in the drawing environment. Also these rules seems to change the units of an already created .ipt.
Rule #1 Link
Rule #2 Link
I am just looking for a rule to select either .in or mm from the styles library(i think) , before I even place a base view. Regardless of the original units used to make the model.
