AutoCAD Inventor :: Planetary / Cyclical Gear Systems
Apr 19, 2013
I'm trying to create a few sets of planetary gears and I'm running up against a wall here.
Both sets, for simplicity, need 1:4 ratios which makes the planet and sun gears the same size. I was using 20 teeth for the planets/sun and 60 teeth for the ring which based on my understanding of the ratios, should work. My problem arises when I attempt to get all of these gears(sun, four planets, and the ring) to mesh and rotate.
I can't figure out how to make sets of more than two gears using the Spur Gear tool. When I make the other gears on their own and add them to the system, they don't inherently mesh and pass through each other. Obviously I'm missing something here because I clearly need more than a two gear system.
As a side question, is there a method(Derived Parts, maybe?) through which I can add to a gear made with the Spur Gear tool to create a new part that will still function as a proper gear?

I'm not able to get the right gear rotation in a planetary gear drive that I'm working on.
If I make the ring gear stationary and rotate the sun gear, the planetary gear engages and rotates around the ring gear
but in the opposite direction of what it should be turning. The planet to sun gear engagement rotates backwards regardless of what I do to the rotation constraint that I've applied.
If I make the ring gear free to rotate, and the planet gear stationary, the gear train rotates properly.
I've attached a mock up of the plant gear system to share and show what I'm dealing with.

I need to create planetary gear. Where should i start? I tried assembly with spur gear, but half of the times program crashes. when gears are made, they don't match.

the .iam assembly and the .ipt parts are to follow.I'm not very concerned with the teeth meshing properly at this stage. I just want to get the rotational constraints correct first. There are two situations that I am trying to work out, and I think I took care of the first one.
Situation 1: Blue carrier is grounded.
Input: Rotate purple sun gear.
Result: red planets turn the orange planets which turn the green sun(green sun to purple sun ratio = 1:1 but in the opposite direction)
Situation 2: Purple sun is grounded (Blue carrier is released)
Input: rotate the blue carrier
Result: I want the planets to still be able to rotate, and basically be driven by the purple sun which is being held. This should then drive the green sun to rotate in the same direction as the blue carrier gears.
The issue here is clearly that the red planets will not rotate since the purple sun is grounded. What should the constraints be instead of a simple rotational motion constraint? In a perfect world, I would like to not have to ground the purple sun, and only have the purple sun rotate when I specifically rotate it. The main input to this system is rotating the blue carrier gear. The purple sun is simply a control/variant.

I'm desperately trying to model a planetary gear set.I've tried using the gear design accelerator but with little success. Essentially, I would like to have the gears set up with the planet carrier held stationary and the ring and sun gears rotating in opposite directions: URL....The first 5 seconds of this video indicate what I'm after.
I know all of the gear data, but am having trouble generating the gear set.

I have tried in vain to construct a planetary gear train in Inventor 2011 & the spur gear generator hasn't work much since the results are far from good, I have problems getting all the gears to fit together. The Internal gear has a diametrical pitch of d=120mm & the smallest gear a diametrical pitch of d=20mm, the outcome should produce a 6:1 gear ratio. The 3 other gears only offer stabillity, but I still need to know how I get it all to fit together with my measurements?

I have been getting this error message alot with 2013. I never got this before with previous versions. I do alot of assemblies that are made of parts that are derived from a main sketch part. The only way to remove the error is by deleting the right part out of the assembly and I can procede. I have read that it has something to do with renaming parts, but I still dont completely understand how I am getting this error. My work flow is the same.

Just upgraded to 2013 about a week ago. Random part files seem to be giving me the same error message "A cyclical constraint dependency has been detected." Some of these parts are ones that worked fine in 2012 and some are ones that I created in 2013 and worked fine for a while, but then started giving me the error later on.

In an attempt to change the unit display on a CC item (from decimal inches to fractional), I came across what, to me, is an issue. In the CC I set the length on a pipe conduit part to a custom column, with the range at .001 - 240 inches. I modified my filename column so it was a string that included the length value at the end. (ie Spool x length).
If I place from CC, as custom, a piece of this conduit, the filename does exactly what I expected. If I specify 24 in the length box in the CC dialog, my filename comes in as "spool x 24"... (or to that effect, I'm paraphrasing). If I do the same thing within the context of a pipe run in that same assembly... the filename, even though I chose place from CC, as custom, and specified a length, comes in as "spool x .001". Every time. And also, any spool pieces generated as a result of populating a route. I expect the filename there to be different as tube & pipe has it's own rules for naming spools... but the description field still generates as "spool x .001".
So, it would appear that the column parameters set in the CC, do not apply at all in Routed Systems? I may have to put this in the idea station... wish I had found it last year, now I'll have to wait another year for apotential fix.

Is there a way to set Inventor so that the sketch origin defaults to the part origin? I find it very frustrating that it always defaults to some random corner of the part's body. It can screw up a part if you decide later on to modify the part such that you eliminate the point to which a coordinate system was defined. Also, when copying and pasting a sketch to new work planes it can be a pain to figure out which point is the origin of the orignal sketch if the pasted sketch is misaligned.
I know you can edit the coordinate system after a sketch is created, but I'd prefer not to have to rememember to do that with every sketch.
This was brought up about 6 years ago and there was no formal resolution

In the second-to-last post John-IV8SP1mentions an option under 'Application Options' for an older version of AI, but I cannot find it in the 2012 applicaton options.

We are on 2014 professional and have been using routed systems for over a year now. One of our guys ran two routes over the course of a couple weeks with no problem. He went to create a new route yesterday and all of the styles are gone (both default and custom). If he goes into the two previously created the style that is used is there, but any other styles are not. What could have changed? I tried deleting the job project and creating it again to verify all the paths. Seems like everyone else's machines are running routed systems fine so I don't think it's a network issue.

Using Routed Systems in the Tube & Pipe Authoring dialog page on the End Treatment pull down -- is there a detailed list of what the different end treatments mean ? such as what does "Quick Connect" exactly mean, or Swaged, single ferrule or dual (such as used with a Swagelok fitting)... What can you do with "Other".... etc..

Someone sent me a differential gear box assembly for my students to experiment with in Dynamic Simulation. It was part of a discussion on example files for students, but now I can't find the thread and don't recall who sent me these files.
In any case, we found a serious problem in one of the files.Ring mount2.ipt Sketch11 there is an arc that centerpoint should be same as projected Origin Center Point, but it is not.It is actually at the midpoint of a projected line that is very close to the origin, but not at the origin.

With the common knowledge of Inventor having a Spur gear generator, please I need calling that Spur gear generator from my API. Note that I am using VB for the programming and I have use Try and Catch for linking my API to the inventor. So on starting debugging my API, Inventor starts just as the example in the my first pluggin.
The Only thing remaining is to link my API to the Spur Gear Generator.

I am working on a project which uses two gear reducers. I have built the gear reducer and saved it as an assembly file so to import it to the assembly of the project. When i import the reducer assembly into the project assembly, the reducer is shown as a single piece, not as a mechanism which i can interact with. But if i select, by doubleclicking, the reducer, it becomes active again. The problem is that i want to connect the reducer to another gear assembly and watch it interact.

When showing a gear in an inventor drawing they look good, but showing a helical gear SUCKS! The display, I realize, is very realistic to what you would see if you held the gear in front of you at this view point or that.
Problem is, I put a helical gear drawing on the shop floor and they machinist wonder why I have two rows of teeth on the gear (since it shows the front face and the helix'd gear teeth).
Any way to remove said offending gear teeth?

I am trying to create a spur gear in Autodesk Inventor 11 using the Spur Gears Component Generator in the Design Accelerator. I have been given diminsions for the Spir Gear as followed but don't know how to enter them because there is only a limited amount of values:
Number of teeth........10
Diametric pitch.........9.6
Circulator pitch.........0.32725
Pitch diameter..........1.0416
Outside diameter......1.25
Root diameter...........0.8006
Addendum...............0.10416
Dedendum...............0.10416
Clearance................0.163541
Whole depth............0.22466
Circular thickness....0.163625
Fillet.......................0.03125
Pressure angle........9.00
I enter in the Addendum, Clearance, and Pressure Angle and it says that the values are Ambiguous Inputs. Is there any way that I can create this gear? it doesn't matter about the Loads, Material Values, and Inputs in the Calculations tab.

Trying to make an internal gear with design generator. I fill in appropriate info, click the 'internal' check box and when I generate I still get an external gear (using component).
Tried creating a part with the proper bore (root) diameter first and use feature...it wipes out my part and creates and external gear with virtually no bore.

I am wanting a piece of info that I cannot seem to locate in the spur gear generator. I will post a picture when I have a chance, but what I am looking for is the 'W' figure (distance over 'x' number of teeth at the pitch line). What I have is a 19.xxx deg. helical gear so the best way to get this info is calculate it, but again, I dont see it in the inventor calculation.
